I feel like not being able to sleep well is an evolutionary advantage our ancestors used back then to keep watch during the night and alert the rest of the group if there was danger. Just think, if every single one of us slept soundly through the night, then we would have definitely been more vulnerable to predators and other dangers during the night. That's my theory anyway.

I heard something that that's why we have night owls and early birds. So the evolutionary advantage would be a shift in sleep schedule.

Wish I were one of these people. I have trouble *getting to* sleep. I can be tired as hell, but 10pm roles around and I feel like bein' up all night. Then feel like shit in the morning.

Apple Lysol Gotta get up for school at 5:00am, don't get out 'til 10:00am. Typical night-shift starts at 10:00pm, ends at 3:00am. Doesn't leave a lotta room for sleep, lifting and a social life unfortunately.😂

Put your phone and any devices away a few minutes before you desire to sleep. the light emitted by phone/laptop/the tablet screens or even your bedroom lights prevent you from feeling sleeping. if your still using your phone and you expect to go to sleepy to even feel sleepy, there is a high chance it's gonna be difficult

Illuminat3d when it comes to genetic, physical, and psycologic iniquality than yes but societal and social iniquality no economic inequality conditional if self infliccted like say you got pregers and have that kid eating at your income (not knocking kids or moms just stating a fact i plan on having kids but not until my early middle aged years) or dont earn the same as someone else because you didnt work your ass off and earn it (like getting raises) then economic inequality is ok but if fourced like legislation that is in favor of one company rather than equal and fair compotition or black listing someone from a specific job field who just pissed you off and didnt do anything illigal just made you angry these are wrong

And you're a racist bigot that can't seem to see that we as white people put and keep minorities in the situations they're in, which is what causes statistics like black people having a higher percentage of being a murderer, which gives us more false reasons to be at least somewhat racist. Have you ever met a black person raised by a typical middle-class family? Have you ever met a white person raised in dangerous neighborhoods with abusive parents?

I've never had that "waking up feeling refreshed" feeling. Never. I always wake up and feel like throughout the night I journeyed endlessly and tirelessly through the tolkien universe and got the ring to mordor and someone congratulated me with a punch to my face.

We know that the glymphatic system works only during sleep and not while awake, and there are other things that only happen during sleep. Now, I don't know if we know WHY that is yet, but it fully explains the need for sleep across species.

it always takes me forever to fall asleep and I never feel refreshed no matter how much sleep I get. Even if my body is tired, my brain never is. And even when I feel like my brain is tired, it's really not.

For some reason I am programmed to sleep at 8 PM to 9 PM and automatically wake up between 4 AM and 6 AM . I sleep very well . Even as a child and a teen I used to sleep the same hours . Never used an alarm clock . I sleep an average of 8 hours a night and thankfully I have a job working days .

It makes sense that our pre-historic ancestors would evolve to have a percentage of the community with different sleep cycles. If everyone slept soundly, they would be attacked easily and wiped out. Having some humans evolve to be light sleepers or 'night owls' would benefit the community in the area of protection and productivity.

In my 20s I could be awake and work on just a couple of hours of sleep for two or three days straight. Not once or twice a month, or even a week. I mean continuously, for many years. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000. Seventeen years later, now, it seems to have slowed me down to being awake one to two straight days. Trace seemed to confirm, at least to me, the genetic aspect. My dad was always going on a few hours of sleep. For once, it was nice to hear that getting less than eight hours of sleep isn't detrimental.

Me and 2 of my children have trouble sleeping. it's 5 am and my 7 year old and I are still awake -- he can talk about philosophical questions and pondering at 2 am. my daughter used to tell me when she was 4 that "her brain wouldn't let her sleep". For them we have tried melatonin, herbal teas, reading, classical music...for me I was staying awake through ambian, and right now I am awake through melatonin, tizanidine, and gabapentian. Possible genetic connections make sense.

After 5 hours of sleep I wake up without the need of an alarm. I tried to sleep more but I was waking way too early. So for many years now, my sleep is from 1 am to 6 am and a short nap during the day, 15 - 20 minutes during my tea break. I can be ok with even 4, and can survive sometimes with even 3 as long as they are from 3 to 6 am, for some reasons for me is the best time for sleep and if I miss this window I am gonna have a hard day. Also less than 3 hours of sleep means I will have to pump caffeine in me all day long to survive.

I already new this. Me, my grandmother, father, and his brother all sleep almost not at all... we wake up at the smallest things. My gf says sometimes I wake up if she just looks at me. Amphetamines are like my worst nightmare.

Very interesting, the sleep efficiency mutation. Needing less sleep could be great for productivity, but it also concerns me, being someone whose primary interest is in lucid dreaming. Will we one day, in the distant future, cease to sleep? Or will we need so little that we won't need to dream (or dream as much)? Many innovations in our history are tied directly to dreams, so it would be a shame to someday evolve past the need for this incredibly interesting state.

my mother has the gene and my grandfather had it on crack. the dude could sleep for 3 hours after working 16 hours and be fired up and ready to go the next morning at 3am.

It confuses me when Trace says that we don't know why we sleep, but then lists all the benefits of sleeping that we know of. Aren't those benefits the answer to the question why we sleep? Or is he implying that we know that those benefits are only incidental, and that there is some other(s) main/underlying reason why we sleep that we know we haven't discovered yet?

I used to ride my bike from school to my house, it took me about 25 to 30 minutes the ride home. One day i got home it was 3 PM and i was so tired i took a nap but i ended up waking up the next dayXD hell of a long nap :p

What about those of us who seem to need to be awake for 18-20 hours and then require AT LEAST 12 hours of sleep to function properly without chemical intervention? We have 24 hours in a day, but I need 30-32. My circadian rythm literally walks around the clock kind of like a blind person. I assure you though, I'm not blind. 20/40 left, 20/80 right.

I found that if I get at east 4 hours of sleep I can wake up complete refreshed and ready to go (I'm also some what of an insomniac)

I know a guy in his 50's that has slept 2 hours every night his whole adult life and still function normally. How is this possible? He only eats one meal every day as well.

So I study Aerospace Engineering at the moment I’ve been struggling with “normal” routines for a while after doing some bio hacks with some uni friends. I’m pretty sure I have some strange genetics..... I honestly can function with half an hour of top quality sleep a day but I’m looking into expert advice for long-term implications.

Rick De Veen I legit can't think of a single credible scientist who thinks its wrong. Its pretty much universal consensus. Could you give me an example of a credible researcher who does say that climate change isn't true.

Karishma Changlani well i dont think you know them because they're dutch. They said all the computers a few decades ago said the global temperature would be much warmer at this time so they say it is wrong by those results. i think the temperature didn't rise that much because we already did a lot against climate change, by example the ozon layer

I may have the mutant sleep gene. I sleep 5 or 6 hours a night. My doctor told me that is probably all I need. That I just don't need 8 hours. I'm wondering if this is the reason for my epilepsy. I've been to many doctors and they've all told me the same thing "they have no idea why I'm having seizures".

i know for a fact that i dont have that gene... i cant stay asleep for longer than 20 hours even if i tried, i get alcohol extoxication-like symtoms if i stay up late, literally feels the same... and if i DO stay up for as long as i can, i tend to sleep for like 12 hours.. also im immune to coffine, which just makes it all worse -.-

I wonder if I have that 6hr thing, cause I'm able to operate perfectly fine on less hours of sleep, but I don't always feel "fully refreshed" either... then again I don't feel fully refreshed most nights regardless of how much sleep I get. lol
