Dragging your outboard motor across the pavement is both the start and end of your boating day.

All thru the 70's, I kept my 27' wooden fishing boat in a saltwater slip. Good bottom paint will last two years. Never had a mold problem 'cause we used good ventilation and stacked the cushions to allow air flow. The slip back then was 1K a year. Marine fuel was 50 cents, while on land it was 30 cents a gallon. I did try trailer boating in the 1980's, but that was a nightmare.

My brother and I towed our 23 CC for the first year, after that we went high and dry at a Marina at Canaveral. Even though it was a few hundred a month, it was worth it, as you said, we went out more often. So nice to call the night before and say hey we're going out in the AM and the boat would be tied to the dock and when we came in was lifted up, washed and rinsed and put back in the building high and dry.

I did the same thing when I lived in south Flori-duh. The ramps were a clusterphuck every day of the week, and dry stacking was the perfect solution. Never had to deal with ramp campers again, and it just made the entire day stress free knowing I could leave them far behind to argue amongst themselves. I’ve even seen fights break out at the ramps, and didn’t want to be anywhere near those knuckleheads again.

Having a boat in the water at your own dock is the ultimate boating luxury. I had that for about 5 years on a large fresh water lake. Used a full cover and didn't need bottom paint. The brightwork didn't seem to suffer. Didn't notice mildew.

I loved having my boat at my own slip, just hop in and pull up to the fuel dock, and your off. These days I don't boat as often, but I have a boat ramp across the road from me. I suppose I have been pretty spoiled over the years, now if that would just spill over into other parts of life. Not so much so far lol.

I grew up on a river, so we kept the big boat in the water at home and trailered a little fishing boat around the area. I find it especially funny watching people try to dock with a current. I don't remember ever not knowing how to do that. You always dock on the downstream side so the boat doesn't rub on the dock.

Ideal situation is keep the boat on the water on a lift or davit. No bottom maintenance but the real cost is most of the time you have to live on the water for this option. I consider myself lucky here in Michigan to have this opportunity. .

so, you don't mention winter - - a Shore Station is fine for summer but you have to take it out in the fall and put it back in the water in the spring and those things are really awkward to get in and out of the water in most cases

Keep the boat in the water and tend daily. Apply proper paint, vasolene or whatever to bottom. Clean and coat as needed after you pull boat out. Simple. Keep launching from trailer to minimum. Learn the tricks of keeping boat in water…😅. Unused moorings, anchorage.

My boat spends most days on the trailer. One reason is the age of the boat, I don't trust it enough to leave it un attended. But the big one is cost. If I had to pay for a slip I would just sell the boat spend my money elsewhere.

I used to keep my boat in a lake on a mooring and it was terrific. I used it 2-4 times per week. It is so much easier when you only have to lug the fishing gear and or water sports stuff and lunch/dinner down to the waters edge. Now that I tow the boat only gets wet maybe 6 times per our short season.

Trailer with a sealskin cover in the front yard. I take it a variety of places around my state (Indiana) and the funds for off-property storage don't exist. Boat is a 16' Starcraft Montego (tri-v ski boat) with a 302.

The marina my family kept their boat at had large D-rings imbedded into the ramps just below the concrete surface. Anyone who had a winch could hook onto them for added safety. I've always wondered why most boat ramps don't have them.

One thing you left out on the disadvantages of a wet slip, at least here in the northeast some places, is availability. You literally have to get on the waiting list and then watch the obituaries for a decade or more. I'm on the list and waiting. In the meantime, I keep it on my trailer on the marina property. Saves on the abuse it takes in the wet slips with people throwing wakes and tidal movement. But you definitely have to give yourself move time for the trailer option.

I keep mine in the water year round at a floating dock in brackish water. $10 per foot per month. Have a diver who cleans the hull every two weeks. I'm on a river that leads out to the bay, and I can go all the way to the Gulf of Mexico if I want. My destination options are only limited by weather and time. Best scenario for me, and I take her out regularly because I park at the dock, load my gear, and go. 3000 running hours on my 10-year-old Yamaha. Can't count the number of hours of anchor time when I'm out.

A friend worked at a yacht club. He needed some help anchoring some docks. I loaded up the scuba gear and headed out. We were standing on the dock at the marina looking the situation over when a ski boat pulled up. We tied up her boat. She had bought it there a few days before and told us it lacked power and didn’t want to come up on plane. My buddy jumped in, fired it up, and took it out to open water to check it out. He came back and verified what she said. With the sun on the water you couldn’t see underneath the boat. So my friend thinking something might be caught in the prop borrowed my scuba mask and jumped in to take a look. He quickly popped up coughing, gagging, trying to breathe. I got him onto the dock and he couldn’t talk, he was laughing so hard he couldn’t catch his breath. He shoved the mask on my head and pointed for me to look. When I did I was in shock! We found the problem or lack thereof. When she launched the boat she unhooked the trailer from the vehicle! The trailer was still attached to the boat! Yes, she was blonde! 😂😂😂😂😂 I dated only blondes and a few redheads. I love ‘em, but damn! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

My boats over the years have always been in the water from breakup to freeze up. Sure it's a harder on the interior but nothing serious. There is algae grow on the back and sides but only where the sun shines, never on the bottom. Five minutes wading around with a scrub brush and it's gone. Spur of the moment boating is the only way to go.

Bottom paint every year gets very old, fast. Getting the boat on poppets & back on the trailer is very time consuming, not to mention the buildup of paint over 30 years. Marina prices have gone UP like EVERYTHING, too. I trailer & I'm always waiting at the dock for an hour for my "party" to arrive.

Love my boat in a slip at a Marina and resting on a Shore Station up probably 2’ above water level. Shore Station probably cost $3,000 new 20 years ago and will probably outlive me! Have a 12 volt electric motor that hooks up to an extension that is on the boat. End of a day of boating, boat is covered, 30 amp dock electric is plugged in, trolling motor batteries and engine batteries are charged up. Boat is raised, electric motor extension is stored and all is well. I do not like to rely on anyone so dry stacking is only likely if in saltwater. Be well.
