Some thoughts on Yu-Gi-Oh reprint sets.

I hate that Rarity Collection discussion always boils down to “reprint sets” when the issue that made RC01 so game changing is that cards should be made available upon release at accessible rarities. RC01 helped players that were priced out of competitive play while RC02 feels more like nostalgia bait

The issue im finding is that konami are trying to have every reprint set do everything half baked instead of focusing them and you're seeing the problems with this design in the tins especially where they're trying to cram 400+ cards into 1 set that should realistically only be about 150-200 at most. Imo they need to focus the reprint sets better and cap their size to 80-100 cards and remove all of the fluff. Focus the big 3 reprint sets as follows: - Rarity collection does staples and genric cards since those are always good to have multiple copies of with lots of different rarities (thrust, SP, typhon, ash, imperm, etc). - Have the tins focus on the archetypes of the past year (see snake eyes/diabelstar, unchained, rescue ace, etc). - Have battles of legends focus on older cards that have become very expensive/popular or past format cards for things like time wizard, edison, goat, etc. (see dragion, prize cards such as minerva/chaos emp, edison cards such as royal oppression, DAD, LADD, etc). Then, with these 3 sets being designed like this, it frees up the ots sets and side sets to focus their reprint slots on more urgent cards that just need a few cards reprinted instead of a whole set. e.g. a staple is released in the core set that comes after that years rarity collection, it can get reprinted in an ots set or side set within that 6 month period where its still desirable without forcing players to wait the full year or longer to have other ways to access that card which all too often currently is only after it's no longer useful.

I think the tcg is so far down the rabbit hole of reprint sets, and I think that issue can be partiality attributed to their general printing policy that makes cards the much less affordable for us. So they try to capitalize on a problem that they themselves created by pumping out so many reprint sets with maybe a couple of chase cards in there every so often, but the sets are overall very lackluster.

Konami definitely wanted to cash out on the RC1 hype, and I think that was the underlying problem with RC2. They knew a good amount of the high value reprints were going to be in the tins, so RC2 ended up being this mishmash of every card that saw even a bit of competitive play and a few cards - not in the tins - that actually needed a reprint. What should have happened was the tins come out with the typical secret rare "reprints" of all the high value cards and then RC2 gets announced several months later and saves the day with proper reprints of those cards at all rarities.

Been loving my Witchcrafter/Branded deck and couldn’t afford Quem as I opted it would be worthwhile to invest in The Black Goat Laughs, Garura and Granguignol due to Quem not being quite as relevant as an extender with the Witchcrafter engine. Was lucky enough to use the 2 Thrusts I pulled, so there’s that at least. Komoney once again 2 steps forwards and taking 10 steps back. WHY wouldn’t they reprint something like Quem in this? Serves me right, in spite of past history to have decently high hopes.. 🤦‍♂️

Rarity Collection 2 was announced after the backlash of how expensive snake-eyes is. This was Konami TCG's first reaction, followed by printing Poplar and Princess as Ultra Rares instead of Secret Rares - then lastly Tenpai being commons + super rares. I'm not sure how sucessful Legacy of Destruction and Phantom Nightmare are, but certainly nowhere near Age of Overlord. Thats why i feel like Konami kinda held back with whats supposed to be in Rarity Collection 2 and that blows, considering Rarity Collection 2 is like 50 bucks more expensive aswell. With the Rarity Collection 2 outrage now, Trident Dragion was confirmed to be in the mega tin - which is 4 months away. As you said the mega tin is a 400 card set. I think the sought after cards will mostly be shortprinted or be expensive either way, because there are way too many cards. You already have S:P, Horus, Snake-Eyes, Bonfire etc in there, was it too much asked for to include more expensive cards in rarity collection 2? Including Fenrir, Druiswurm, Dis pater, Kurikara and Thrust or Chaos Angel would made Rarity Collection 2 better and imo add Snatch Steal, Rai-Oh, Upstart Goblin, Chicken Game, Cyber Dragon Infinity + 1 of Protos or Colossus and its a really good set. Instead half of the cards in RC2 were either reprinted within the last 6 months or were already pennies. I would agree with a second print of a card (in your example Thrust) being more accessable, but thats nothing new. Imperm came out january 2018 in Flames of Destruction and was a secret rare, reprinted as ultra rare, again as ultra rare and then gold rare in maximum gold (end of 2020) or if you dont like gold rares - in the cyber strike structure deck, which came out october 2021.

All starter and structure decks should be reprinted regularly so people can play Yu-Gi-Oh! at any level they wish. Kinda hard to when you can’t get the cards/sets you want anymore. MD is nice in that it duels for you and you don’t have to worry about understanding newer card effects but that’s really not fun.

Personally I don't hate RC2 I just hate that Yu-Gi-Oh is killing the great momentum it felt like it had coming from around the time RC1 came out. RC1, AGOV and the Fire Kings Structure all felt like wins when they came out. Everything since then has just felt lackluster including the banlist. And tbf I've enjoyed some of the recent releases, but it all feels overshadowed by Snake Eyes.

Crossout Designator reprint = gonna get hit on next ban list

This is something I appreciate and respect a lot more with Yugioh compared to MTG. EVENTUALLY, I know the cards I need will be dirt cheap and accessible. Whereas with Magic you never know when the next reprint comes around. Whenever that is the case, it'll still be a mythic or a rare, so it won't be easy to pull.

I hope that they make the cards in the tin like snakeeye, diabell, sinful, kashtira, tearlement, trident, ... not high rarity again. Then they would still be f****** expensive.

Personally, I'm all in for RC to replace tins if need be, since it does much better job of what it's intended to.

I appreciate reprints set and more ones like the Rarity Collection that can give a boost to some card's rarity. But I think that Konami over-hyped this set and under-delivered, some cards don't make any sense, cards like Twin Twister or MST that don't seem any use today, and the last one being one of the most if not the most reprinted card in the history of the game, or Exosister Pax a card that it's super cheap and super new, and these are only two examples but I could keep saying a lot of cards that don't make sense, but you get the idea. The set was supposed to be a continuation of the great set that was the first Rarity Collection, but it doesn't leave to the name, and even worse it's more expensive, with Konami lying about you getting double, which is false because the double of a booster pack on 5 cards its a one with 10, not 9, they are cutting one card which makes every booster it's slightly worse.

I think a part of RC02 getting such dislike is because of the other side of a coin you mentioned, the way that the inclusion of certain reprints in one set sort of tacitly implies it is or isn't in another. Take a card like Diviner of the Herald, where the recent release of several new ritual archetypes has made it desireable and creep up in price. Since it's a few years old it feels less likely to be in mega tins since those focus on the previous year-ish sets, it didn't fit the aesthetic of Battles of Legend or Terminal World, so it felt like a sure hit in RC02. It makes it's omission feel super bad, because if it wasnt im there, where will it be? Nowhere? That's how I feel about the couple cards similar to Diviner people are talking about, that are 2-4ish years old and could use a reprint because they are $10+, but didn't make it into this set.

Diviner and dragion shouldve just been in here. Having rarity 2 coming so fast after rarity 1 was sus, we needed more time in-between sets for more important cards come out and old useful cards to surface. We just needed more time in between

Something that was brought up during locals yesterday, Kashtira Fenrir should've been reprinted in RC02

I am someone who does not mind RC2 personally since there's some cards that keep evading me that I would love to get(Final two copies of Crossout, The Blue-Eyes cards, Accesscode, Dragoon, etc) though I do feel like there could be a nice balance of meta cards and nostalgia bait/Cards that really needed a reprint. Like beyond MST and a couple of others, I can kind of see the logic of why some of those cards are in there: Usually expensive or at the very least, hard to get. Though I think if they do RC3, they should try to strike a better balance. I do love it when any expensive card, regardless if they are meta or not get reprints(Like how Blue Eyes should not cost a paycheck to build a deck with its modern tech in) but I do feel they could have been a bit more transparent about it. I don't mind it at all, personally. I do hope going forward they can find that better balance. Meta cards like Triple Tactics Thrust and archetype focused, but equally expensive cards like Chamber Dragonmaid or DPE all deserve to be in the same rarity collection set IMO. If we can't get the mixed rarity system OCG has, at the very least that would be how I want things.

I'll be picking up at least one box of this set, but it is definitely a step down from the first rarity collection - if I didn't want to pick up purrely stuff, I probably wouldn't even look at this set

Bought 4x LEDE display for that juicy tenpai dragons. Not a single paidra. All commons were printed equally but the rest is very unbalanced. Not going to buy sealed products again. I hate short prints.

Here in south africa, the rarity collection was on preorder for 183$ then 2 weeks before the release date. The price spiked up to 292$ suddenly and after seeing how the set was. Rarity 1 was just a better modern reprint set and way worth the cost overall.

I'll probably get a couple of the packs, as I like to collect one of every booster pack I can find, but outside of that, I'm really not interested in these reprints. Just not much I really see being useful to me. I feel like they probably could have listened to the player base a little better to plan for would go into this thing. Personally, I would have LOVED if they reprinted Kurikara Divincarnate. Even now, it's quite expensive.

as a casual player who mostly plays with his gf, I enjoy that some cards are loosing value. Some are getting cheaper and more accessible(?). My gf and I just want to play the card game we're playing on a budget. Yugioh is a expensive hobby and for us it's just a neat game we like to play sometimes and for this reason we're looking forward to it 😊

They should have said it's more of a time wizard reprint set with modern cards and the dragion in there

it's annoying how many sets are just hanging onto the DM series for this long, like they have their place, but man, Konami is just really using them to as much as they can. It really sucks too since not a lot of great cards are readily accessible unless you can get them online or hope you find them in a store for cheap

As a budget player wanting to compete, it just sorta hurt to see many cards missed. Konami feels the negativity and may influence how they handle things in the future. Ultimately Konami makes the calls and if you feel so unhappy just stop playing and buying. I'm almost there😅

As a Magic player, It is so weird seing How often you get reprints. The vast majority of Magic cards are never reprinted. And half that are reprinted are reprinted as super rare cards. But it makes sense as you have a single eternal format. If Magic was Legacy only, It would reprint way more cards to keep the game acessible.

I hope we get more Time Wizard reprint sets like the new Lightsworn reprint set, RC2 having old reprints makes me happy despite it being "worse" than RC1, I hope we continue getting big waves of reprints.

Konami was obviously keeping reprints out of rarity collection 2 just so they could sell their other products.

Reminds me how magoc does the reprints. Im just here for edison reprints tho. Old yugioh and commander is the way to go

My problem with Rarity collection 2 is why put 4 Blue-Eyes cards in a 80 cards set just put 1 card of each archetype so everyone gets a Rarity bump reprint there's nothing for Hero or Cyber Dragon players in the set or better yet just do what the OCG did just make "Quarter Century Chronicle" set so everyone gets a piece of the pie

I think this set is fine. I don't know what people were expecting from this, this set was admitted by konami to be a deviation from their plans that was set in motion soon after the release of RC1. They already had other reprints planned out for the tins and battles of legend at that point, and it would have been a bad decision for them to start overlapping with those. So all the cards people keep talking about - S:P, thrust, bonfire, dragion - already weren't going to be there when they are due to be reprinted elsewhere. Getting upset at that doesn't change the reality of the situation that the time tables for this kind of work have to happen many weeks in advance and have other moving parts involved. In terms of what it actually does deliver, the set has a few really good hits. Guardian chimera, dark dragoon, crossout designator, magicians' souls, and accesscode were all cards in desperate need of reprints. Many others like droll and ghost ogre are just really good cards for the format or to have in general. The edison staples are a bit more questionable, especially with the light of destruction reprint. I guess this is meant more to provide rarity bumps for those cards, which is something people seem to be forgetting: this is both a reprint set and a luxury rarity upgrade set

As a coffee table yugioh player I feel indifferent about the reprint sets. Overall they are a net positive for me because they make some card just way more affordable. I do like the rarity collections simply for having a somewhat smaller card pool that is available in every rarity, but really hate how bloated the mega tins are, even though I get that they are basically a best of reprint set. I picked up a 2023 Mega Tin when I bought my Crimson King SDs, just for the fun of opening a pack with lots of shiny cardboard. I mean I also wanted to take a shot at getting one of the bystials to splash into my RDA deck, but I fully knew that it was very unlikely that I would get any card that I wanted. What I don't get is, that a lot of cards are pushed into high rarity slots. I really want to build an Ashened deck and I have most of the core already, except for "Awakening of Veidos" and base Veidos from PHNI. I bit the bullet and paid the waifu tax for Priestress, since the rest of the PHNI core was so cheap, but I won't pay 20+ bucks for one copy of Veidos, let alone ~100 for a playset. I could get multiple deck cores for that price. Putting everything I want to get from the set into the really rare slots that you have to gamble on is making me also not want to buy sealed products. If most of the cards were available as commons first and rarity bumps second, I'd honestly buy some packs first and buy singles later when I want to complete my core. And I know the more you bloat the commons pool, the less likely it is to pull the cards you want from it, but I would at least feel less cheated, than seeing common dupes after the 5th booster and only getting all the high rarity cards I did not want from that set.

Nah only way I spend money is when cyber dragons or cyberdark get new support and even then I either buy structure or single cards via Amazon or Walmart or TCG Player that way I know exactly what I’m getting and not overall wasting money on a toxic game anymore than I need to.

What's annoying about the reprint tins is that they reprint commons and non meta or casual relevant filler cards along side the cards that deserve reprints meanwhile some cards that have merely 1 printing haven't seen a reprint for years are completely overlooked. Ex. Propa Gandrake has two prints despite being a common that no one wants enough to justify reprinting but drytron nova and meteonis drytron haven't seen a reprint since their first set.

I think reprints like rarity collections are made for people like me. As in people not willing to pay £40 for one card by itself. sure the rarity collection as a box is pricier than I like... £110 for vol 1 and £130 for vol 2 as opposed to the average box you get for £40 to £60 but unlike core boosters I'll actually use like 90 percent of what's in thease. Most of the cards here I actually haven't had the chance to get. Just like hoe ghost from the past and the duelest 25th set. Was very stoked to get those reprinted bystial cards

Cards reprinted for older formats should have the correct errata for that format. They could write "April 2010" in the same spot they put "Speed Duel"

One of my favorite reprint sets was Duel Power, I bought many singles boxes and it was cool to open. Small set one rarity only. Ghost from the past was kinda dissaponting and the same for the second one. RC02 is filling the space for the spring set but it doesn't have the high end cards people were dreaming would come there. Still I think is a good set but yeah, this is just to avoid doing what they do in OCG and just putting the card in multiple rarities as they come out, like SP that is a super but comes as well in higher rarity for collectors and people wanting everything to shine. And let's not forget that we no longer have unlimited runs of packs so once it finished, good luck paying overpriced boxes for a set that only exists as "1st edition" that is basically a useless text now.

I think when they did the first one they weren't so sure how it was going to do so they threw in as many good staple cards as they could think of. Then when they realized this was a thing they could potentially do annually they realized they had to slowly reprint high-end Staples in these sets if they want to be able to keep doing it. There was really no need for them to inflate the price.

You pretty much hit all the major points when it comes to reprint sets. For this rarity collection I think the main issue is just that MSRP, way higher that the first rarity collection. If they want this sets to sell, is a combination of cards in the set and the accessibility of them.

i think Rarity II does a good job at providing Extra Deck staples and Side Deck staples to new players, BUT the price of the packs is too discouraging

I just wish they would reprint cards that got their new support, I'm still sad about Puppet King getting all his support cards in 1 set but he hasn't been reprinted in a year since then, and is like a $10 secret rare from a set that is over a decade old

It bothers me that money cards like Ultimate Slayer and Kurikara Divincarnate that have missed multiple reprint sets now, despite the 2023 mega tin already covering the set these cards were released in. I still hope that maybe Battles of Legend will finally give us reprints of these missing cards, but this new developing trend of omitting highly sought after cards is already making me concerned for the 2024 mega tin.

I think there should be as many reprint products as possible periodically throughout the year, in addition to the new product sets. It would be more justifiable if Konami would support more eternal formats to use older cards that aren't really current meta staples. Like if they'd overhaul Traditional Format to be more akin to Modern Format in MTG. And then only allow the Most Current sets legal in Advanced Format. Like if an Archetype came out in the last say, 18 months, that's what is legal in Advanced Format then after 18 months, it becomes legal in Traditional Format.

While I'm not as into the card game like I was my opinion likely would be irrelevant however since I played during days where some staples were just hard to get if not impossible, I am glad it's happening more. It's something that might have kept me in the hobby more if it had happened when I could reliably play with fellow duelists. One of the problems I ran into was I had a very finite entertainment budget. I had to make choices, would I get this or that and Yu-Gi-Oh was a game I had to cut from my list of hobbies cause certain key staples were just unattainable for me, where as like 4th edition D&D was something I could reliably play and once I had the book I could build characters based on that book. Or MTG where I wasn't playing formats that heavily relied on expensive cards. Both were hobbies that I could stay involved in on a budget. I just didn't in the end get the same out of Yu-Gi-Oh as I did when most staples that you needed for decks were in structure decks. And the hard to get ones were usually on the ban list anyway. But as someone whom just got pushed out the hobby by the rarity and value key staples ended up having, its something I wish happened much earlier in the run of the game.

Rarity collection should add new ALT arts to the cards they are putting in the set and not just the same old cards or even full Art cards to change it up some.

Rarity collection 2 set and structure packs Konami just keeps giving us bad products. I hope it improves in the future.

As a returning player that runs blue eyes I’m in love

To be fair, for people just joining the game, like me, these things are literal gold. Getting good cards old nostalgic cards and lots of stuff that just looks fun. Im sorry for the older players but... we all are playing our own protagonist stories.

I feel bad for the mom and pop shop that stock RA02 because they are the one taking the biggest L. Us players have the chance to wait and see the full list before we buy, but these shops have the make pre-orders months in advance to make sure they meet supply and demand. Bigger stores that host official tournaments take a bigger L because they have to trust in Konami to make a half decent booster pack for them to sell well. Lets be super honest, RA02 wasn't to rob on us players, but to rob shop owners who believed in how quick RA01 sold, that RA02 will do the same if not better. Truly sad Konami did this to its community.

The real problem RCO2 have is not just the cards but the price of the set which is $140-200 which is wild that doubled the price what you get with reprint set originally.

My only complaint with this set is its pricing. Why aren't these the usual $4-5 per pack? The quality of reprints have dropped a bit. I understand that there are more cards per pack now but I don't think cards like MST needed a reprint for the 20th time. However, I do enjoy that Konami is paying attention to other formats. I just feel that they could have different sets for different audiences. I think Konami could consolidate their reprint product line a bit. They can either make bigger sets for more reprints or make products that are curated for certain audiences. Older cards can be reprinted in a set made to reprint older cards. They could make a Dark Beginning 3 or Dark Revelation Volume 3 where they could return to making reprints for that era. Keep yearly tins as the big reprint sets with an attractive promo.

The problem isnt that rarity collection 2 ig a good or bad set, its actually better than most reprimt sets, but its actually that people think its bad because they compare It to the previois one, that was the best set of probably the last 15 years and had almost every staple under the sun

Given Konami's power creep mindset, I really feel they could just give us last year championship decks like Pokemon but allow those cards to be used in tournament play (unlike Pokemon). This would make getting long-term staples a non-issue and separates it from future sales, which you'll still need to buy anyway for the next busted archetype to play competitively

At my local card shop pre orders for this set is $150, I'll just buy single packs else where

the 400 card tins are really bad for the comunnity. It means little amounts of cards we need enter the market so prices don't really drop alot and cards like SP would still be like a 60/70$ card. You would have a higher chance of pulling it from an agov pack than the tins. I know it won't happen, but they should do something cool like make a reprint e.g TT thrust as a super in an OTS pack to encourage people to go to tournaments and locals.

There are only about 10 cards total in this set that I want. Not worth opening. At least its better than most core sets in that aspects though, normally they'd print cards I want at only higher rarities.

Great concept that Konami is throwing away by being greedy as usual. Rarity Collection 2 might as well just be duel devastator 2 only its 180 dollars a box MSRP not 40 and you don't get the cards guarenteed.

I don’t think it’s too big an issue for a chase reprint being reprinted as a higher rarity (secret or ultra), but more an issue that it’s short printed. Like the way Forbidden Droplets was bastardized for two years was ridiculous, getting reprinted at the highest rarity in its respective sets + short printed each time was ridiculous.

The most common complaint ive seen so far is the price point, which i dont really get. You could preorder boxes for 130-135€ a box (24packs) even before the reveals. Thats about 5,60€ per pack which is slightly more expensive than RA01 but with nearly double the amount of cards per pack. Where is the issue with the price point?
