Here's my take on the 1982 Jackson Browne hit, "Somebody's Baby." This one takes me back to my highschool days not too long before I met my highschool sweetheart, and future wife, Bobbi.
The song easily became a part of the soundtrack of my life, and the lyrics could've been ripped from my own private houghts back then. The backstory, for me at least, began when I first took notice of the young lady sitting in the soprano section across the room in chorus class. She had regal posture, hair reminiscent of Princess Di, and a very cute smile accented by braces. On the day I took note, she had something else too...a letterman's jacket. Not just any letterman's jacket mind you, but one that was highly decorated with football pins. I didn't know exactly who she was, but I quickly surmised that she must be dating a BMOC, (that 's, Big Man On Campus). In other words, she's gotta be somebody's baby. Well, thanks to a mutual friend, I learned a little later on that she might actually be interested in getting to know ME better, and that's where Browne's lyrics came into play, yet again, "I know I'm gonna know her, But I gotta get over my fright. Well, I'ma gonna walk up to her; I'm gonna talk to her tonight." Actually, I asked her to the prom at her locker in the afternoon, but you get the idea. That took some courage let me tell you, but soon after that I learned the letterman's jacket was none other than her big brother's jacket that he earned as a star quarterback a few years earlier! haha Three and a half decades later, and here we are today. She is still somebody's baby alright!
Special thanks to my friend, Rob Olsen from Maton Guitars Nashville, who not only helped sell me the Maton guitar I'm playing, but also showed me some of the signature licks to this very song! And thanks to Jackson Browne for unwittingly telling my story.
