I had a chance to meet ZUN (Touhou creator) back at Comiket 100, can confirm that he's a super chill dude. I bought Touhou 18.5 for a friend (I've never played Touhou) and the guy was putting all the money from his sales into a big plastic garbage bag at his booth

I love being a Touhou fan they just have the incredible ability to take any genre of game add a silly new mechanic, reskin it with Touhou characters and then polish it until it is 300% better than the original somehow

I think this actually confirms that Jacob didn't play too much of Immaterial and Missing Power, since he would have absolutely made a bit out of asking Jo to guess Suika's (the final girl) name without any hints As for Zun's views on copyright, he has listed guidelines for use, but it basically boils down to: Don't use game assets except screenshots, he recommends making things yourself, don't get the names of characters and games wrong, please credit his team if possible, and don't be a dick. I want to list all the things this game does right/has going for it: • Good physics (pieces move easily but don't randomly shoot up). • Good collisions/hitboxes (not much empty space and pieces are not glitching into eachother despite their odd shape AND shapes merge pretty easily/generously). • Clear line for where "out of bound" is. • Timer Mechanic for out of bound. • Quick Drop. • Insta-merge from a quick drop, • Multi-merge/multi-merge text for when you get a multi-merge. • Tier-Skipping from multi-merge. • Tier-Unlock (wheel) through progression (this allows you to know what is the current highest tier on the board). • The wheel is easy to understand _(this item is only on here out of spite against suika shapes, cause apparently YOU CAN MESS UP on making a very easy to make guide graphic)._ • Transparent drop icon as to not overlap with pieces that are already placed. • "Current" is prominent so you don't "have" to look at the piece you are moving to know what you are holding _(this is a personal one since in classic suika I tend to look there to know what I'm holding only to find out that's what's next, not what's current)._ • Other modes not shown in the video (and thus I am unable to point out all the good things those modes do ontop of everything else I pointed out). • Pieces you can "interact" with (some people might call that a negative, but it is ANOTHER fresh idea this game had that could be expanded on further in other suika-likes). • SECRET BOSS!!!! (and/or new-game+ (?) ). TL;DR: _despite outward appearances, this game has a lot going for it under the hood. Dev was cooken._ And now for the drawbacks: - No line or way to aim (you kinda gotta eyeball it). - They put "Current" where "next" is in every other suika-like _(personally, I woulda put it above where it says "classic mode", this way "Next" is on the Right of the board, and current is on the Left)._ - No HOLD mechanic/Swapping between Next and Current. - The theming of the "fruit". - Literally nothing else. That's it. Ya done good Touhou Suika.👍

On Bad Apple, its a remix based on a stage theme from one of the earlier touhou games, Lotus and Land story. The band that made it played it live several times as well! The creation of the animation was also very nice. On a japanese video sharing website (I think Pico Pico but I could be wrong) a fan shared a rough draft for the animation. They weren't an animator themself, but wanted to put the idea out there. Someone with the right skill set came along and animated in I wanna say MMD using the draft. Which blew up on Pico Pico and then went onto youtube as well.

There's entire bands that do touhou covers and even multiple fan made animes, and while their probably in contact with Zun, he's basically never taken down a fan project. Funny thing is his company is called team Shanghai Alice (Alice being one of the stringer touhou characters) but it really is just him, one guy. The touhou fighting games are made by multiple people, however. So like touhou 10.5, 12.5, 14.5, 15.5 and maybe one im forgetting.

There are some rules regarding making Touhou game, you can not crowdfund one for example. Unfortunately these rules get communicated and updated on the creator's Japanese blog, making some rules hard to clarify. Lately ever since the creator got a lawyer managing things for him, things have become a lot less lax for Touhou fan-products and a lot more uncertain.

5:30 well this is actually some genius design. So the general problem with designing Suika is that if you have the hitboxes too big it fills up the box quicker than you think it should which is annoying. But if you have the hitboxes too small they cant hit eachother as easily. This game takes the best of both worlds, it makes it so that when two of the same type are near they are attracted to eachother, and has the smaller hitboxes.

The horned girl who takes place of the watermelon is called Suika, it's a pun because she's named suika and it's the suika game. Short explanation of the secret giant character: So the smallest character is an inchling named sukuna, she is naturally very tiny as an inchling. But due to plot stuff, she could become large.

There are a lot of really cool touhou fangames, Luna Nights is a metroidvania that's a lot of fun, Artificial Dream in Arcadia is an RPG thats very similar to the SNES Shin Megami Tensei games. Highly recommend both. Also, not sure if this is true, but apparently UN Owen was her, one of the most famous songs in touhou, also known as the Ronald McDonald insanity song, was composed by ZUN in 4 hours

Apparently the music piece is one of Suika's themes, Broken Moon. Thought it was another song for a bit. There is *a* line with fan creations of the series, otherwise the Ufotable anime would almost certainly have finished, but the line changes over time. In the past I heard it was that you're not allowed to voice characters so that people don't get ideas of what the "canon" voices of Touhou characters are, but Lost Word got around that by just giving each character multiple voices, and that game's official. I also heard that there was something about commercialization, but I'm not sure what the line would be there, given that there are entire conventions of people sharing and selling Touhou fan works and ZUN himself goes there to meet with the community and to show off his next game occasionally.

I think the three pieces merging into one is actually in the original suika game, it just never mentions it. There have been times where I merged three pieces into one but whenever it skipped the piece I thought it was a bug. It seems this game is actually accepting it as a mechanic even if it might have been a bug in the original.

In case anyone is wondering, Jacob's favorite Touhou is Sakuya Izayoi, going off of the rivals of aether videos. If you google her it makes sense: blue, white hair, badass, and a bit edgy looking. A very Jacob-coded character indeed.

3:53 WOW! This game seems to actually allow the merging of three combinable characters at once! I don't think I've seen the other games do that. It looks like combining three at once leads to a 2-tier promotion instead of a single promotion as well. That means you can have a very advanced strat of reducing the amount of characters required to be placed to generate bigger characters and advance your score, improving placement efficiency. That's a nifty feature!

My only knowledge of Touhou comes from shockingly good Slay the Spire mods. There’s a mod that coverts all the enemies and bosses into Touhou enemies and it’s such a sick mod on its own merit

huge touhou fan here, yeah the guy who makes the official games (zun) is super relaxed about everything. there are some guidelines but they basically just boil down to "don't misrepresent the series or be a bad person with it", and he also frequents a youtube stream series called touhou station that basically focuses on fan content 99% of the time and sometimes he plays people's games there it's super cool outside of the main shmups there are 6 official fighting game spin-offs that are honestly really fun and i heavily recommend them alongside the rest of the series there is an english wiki for the series that has pretty much everything you could ever want to learn about the series, and most of the official games are available on steam

There are some rules with touhou as an IP, you have to credit the guy and his doujin 'circle' properly, but otherwise you're free to do whatever.

Touhou has a Permissive License, so basically you can do whatever as long as you follow some guidelines. These guidelines mostly pertain to japanese media made for sale, and get a bit stricter if it's meant for international sale. One of the most important stipulations, given higher priority than crediting the original creator, is not mixing up the names of characters.

Honestly with the amount of Touhou content out there you could do 365 days of Touhou… actually I might take that idea for myself

the multi-merge thing has happened in a few of the other suikas, but im not sure if it was intentional in the other ones or if it was a side effect of the middle piece causing two of the next tier to spawn simultaneously ending up as an extra tier up. either way i like that its definitely intentional here, and the secret tiers is neat
