I use main line tubing with smaller tubing coming off. H.D. has mini spray heads with extendable shafts and each can be either run full, turned down or turned off. So you can really control when and where the water goes. Spray heads come in a variety of spray patterns. The whole system is on battery powered timers with an in-line filter closest to the tap, then the timer, and then the 4 way spliter with each having an on/off servicing 4 main lines. Nice to have it all work on its own, though you are constantly adjusting for plant needs. Great to be gone for the day or two and know the garden is safe and happy. Good job, Curtis and Wranglerstars....
I think you and Mrs W need a HUGE THANK YOU from me!!! This video led me to Curtis' channel and it totally changed what I want to do with my life. I am going to convert my dead yard to garden. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Great collaboration with Curtis! I've been watching him for years! He and I don't do things exactly the same but I certainly have learned a lot from him. We grow different crops, for sure, but still learn tons from him. He doesn't have the time to invest in a lot of "long" crops (potatoes, peas, beans etc) but really is an expert on "short" crops and quick turnover. He is a master at intensive, rotational, succession plantings that yield quickly and are very marketable in his area. His microgreen (sunflower, pea and radish for the most part) production in his greenhouse is a sight to behold! Those crops are turning over in 10 days or so......One thing he didn't mention here is that he does the majority of it on land (back yards, vacant lots etc) that he doesn't own in an urban setting. His sense of organization amazes me...wish I were better at it!
I've been watching Curtis for a while. He's a bucket of great information. Even though he's in a much different environment than I am here in central Texas, I've gotten so much from him as far as the system.
I was pleased to see you collaborate with Curtis Stone, and acquire some insight to his enterprise. I have been following his work almost as long as your own. You will definitely improve your harvest by pursuit of the low labor crops first - fruit trees - squash and berries that do well in your climate. Then the greens and other veggies will fill your time and you will be prepared to barter your crop surplus. It will become a great management education tool for Jack. It will take more time than expected to acquire all of the equipment and supplies to grow your endeavor.
For your bird netting try using rolls of plastic deer fencing. I use it and it cost a fraction of that of bird netting. I purchase it for under 20 dollars for a 9' by 100' roll.
Wonderful advice! I love how you all did a video together! It's always wonderful to see the people I love to watch all in one video in each other's worlds!
A solution for the greenhouse, could be to make a dome one. Built one in Iceland (greenhouse and northern light "igloo guesthouse"). Never had any issues with either snow or hurricane (survived winds of 210kph with no damage). And we get LOADS of snow in the north. I found it worked well because you can play with how you lay out your plants depending if they're creepers (they can go up the structure) or if they prefer more heat etc.... Also very cheap to make and as a carpenter I really enjoyed it as it brought a whole new set of technical challenges I had never come across.
Great content and very timely. Just moved to the mountains and planning a garden for next year. We have lots of trees to take down so I plan to mill them and build the raised beds. Looking forward to the fresh ingredients. I learn a lot from you Cody, thank you for including us in your experiences.
I am a follower of Curtis. He is fantastic. This was great information. Start out with limited crops, nail them, greenhouse or nursery, succession planting and systems for watering. I spend a lot of time watering and some plants, like tomatoes, letting wilt will reduce it'a production. Thank you for having him. Too bad you didn't get his tomatoes
WOW , 2 of my favorite youtubers on one vid , Curtis is a national treasure , got us onto micro greens , experimenting with different varieties with friends ,we make small trays and give away.
Thanks for sharing. Curtis is another U tubers that I have followed for some time. Cody, I know you have mentioned Back To Eden garden method. Maybe if you take down the boxes that Curtis mentioned and do a shallower raised bed and put the 4 inches of wood chips for the covering. I have 3 long beds that I have grown veggies that way and it is awesome. I don't have to water and hardly any weeds. What weeds I do pull, come out easily. Love and blessings to your family., Jim
Well, we feel better! Our NE Alabama garden is a disaster this year. Cool, rainy, cloudy weather has destroyed it. We are also guilty of some of the mistakes he mentioned. Thanks for great advice for next year!
Enjoyed this quite a bit! I think his advice about mastering a few things first and adding more from there is great and applies to just about everything, not only gardening/homesteading. Easy to get spread too thin and accomplish next to nothing if you're ambitious and tend to take on too many things at once.
Maybe im missing something here, but a solution to the raised beds issue is growing all around you?. Long logs stacked 2 high would make a robust raised bed with many long term benefits. Just my 2p.
This is so cool to see. I have worked with Curtis before locally after viewing his videos on youtube and having similar interests. I wonder if I will ever have the opportunity to meet Cody as I am a wildland firefighter too. 2 years away from living on my dream homesteading land in the Kelowna area of BC :)
I'm already a subscriber of Curtis' channel. I guess you could call me an urban homesteader somewhat because I've turned my flower beds into vegetable beds and I'm woking on making my garden into something that is beautiful as well as edible. another thing which is causing problems for gardeners and farmers is that the wobble of the earth's axis is changing so that the sun is higher in the sky in summer and now getting kind of lower in the sky in winter. This is resulting in the weather we're seeing being difficult and radical. NASA blames it on manmade global warming. But the practical side is that we get hotter summers and colder winters with short or non-existent springs and falls and we have to adapt to it and figure out how to do things under the new conditions.
lol i love the part when he gets elbow deep into that tomato plant. swishing it around, pushing stems all around, pulling stems off hahaha. it's like he's lost in the jungle. edit: 6:35
Hey wranglestar love your book, you would get more sales if you advertise it more, i was subbed for a long time and i just learned about your book and bought it instantly
No need to be upset. I love learning. Our LONG garden interview was VERY edited. I had done some things he recommended...and as he said - every garden is different. I end up having a great harvest each year and this will only make it better! MrsW
Thanks for the encouragement, Mrs. W. This is my first year trying to garden on my own as our 2 year old little girl is becoming interested. Blueberries as they're her favorite, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, watermelons, flowers for my wife. Asparagus goes in this weekend, hopefully it will survive the summer heat and bear for several years to come! Tons to learn....
More time consuming though and messier. Have to bury them too. don't have time for that. Besides I like birds. Got cedar waxwings, stellar jays, robins and a plethora of little birds. Even my own chickens if they get out. lol Just a net will do for me if I can find a big enough one.
WRANGLERSTAR...HELP NEEDED PLEASE! Something seems to have happened to many older videos, which are now marked "Private" and cannot be watched. For example, I clicked on the "Kitchen Remodel" playlist and all but a couple videos say "Private" and can't be opened. Did something go wrong? Anyone else have this issue? Thanks in advance!
Good information there Hey maybe he has stop by my place and give me some tips, Although Michigan is a long ways from Mount Fuji . Will definitely Check-out his channel . Have a Jesus filled day Greg in Michigan
