Best work is that fresh shave and haircut !!!!!!! Look WAY younger and better. Am 73 and remember this car from 65 and 66 , still coolest thing ever . I have a 24 GT 6 speed now. Still want a 65/ 66 Fastback. Good luck !!!

Wow brother, in such a short time, you've gone so hard core !!! I've been at this for 40 some years, and never tried to rebuild a 8" chunk !!! Props for sticking it out.. That's how we "learn" the trade.. I'll be watching, keep going... 👍

Welcome back! I was hoping you didn't give up on the videos. Congrats on tackling this rebuild, it's not for most people because of the special tools and the extra care needed during the shimming process. I had the same problem with my stock housing, cracked right at the pinion support. If it's not too late, grab the old bearing races out of the trash and save them for your press. I like to use old bearing races and the inner sleeve from roller bearings (I tear out all the rollers and cage) as tools for my press because they are all different sizes and sometimes are perfect for what I need on the press.

Thanks Andy - the real world & work travel got in the way for a bit. Good call on saving the races, great bit of info. This was just the mental warmup before I tackle the top loader.

As Mr. Kruse pointed out, old races and old bearings are good for pressing on the new ones. On the Jeep I cut the old inner part of the bearing off the pinion and the carrier very carefully, that allows one to use the old bearings to press on the new ones without fear of them getting stuck on there. Using your gears in the replacement housing added to your difficulties in getting them set up. Also, did you measure the shim thickness on the replacement pinion? That particular shim has as much to do with the housing casting as it does with the pinion machining.....just a thought. On a Jeep it is good practice to use a battery drill with a socket to spin the pinion when you are checking pattern, also putting a little drag with a gloved hand on the ring gear, not sure if that is standard practice on a third member set up. Nice job, son. Keep it up!!!

Solid jazz choice for the cleaning montage.

i have a strange engineering 9310 alloy 3:89 for a 9" (perfect for TWS) when you need it. I'm running a 3:25 now due to COTA... funny, same 166 MPH top speed with both gears at COTA, they just happen at different times. but at COTA the 3:25 is a faster lap time by hitting "terminal velocity" later on the straights.

Thanks, Haas! I just picked up some Motive 3.55s & got a great deal on a Yukon LSD. If/when I upgrade to a 9 inch I may take you up on that.

At least you found the crack BEFORE it was all back in the car. Profit!
