Why do archaeologists love to collect pottery sherds? If they find enough pieces, they might have enough to reconstruct a vessel-that they can keep their candy in! Smashed vessels are the original 3D puzzles.
In this episode, Dr. Steve and Gary discuss how the scattered sherds collected over sixteen seasons at Tall el-Hammam are proving to be a collection archaeologists have not seen elsewhere in the Levant.
Also, watch and see what is afoot with a foot from a footed vessel!

Would it be possible to take digital scans of all of the pottery and use software to match based on size, shape and color? I would think you'd at least be able to walk away with a probability map as to which pieces might go where. I would imagine that's a thing that can be done, but maybe expensive? This stuff is super cool. I love seeing the work of the artisans of ancient history. Truly masters of their craft, and innovating in ways that no one else seemed to be doing. So many of the innovations humanity has had over our history have been lost due to lack of communication, war, or disaster. Rediscovering what they discovered so is absolutely amazing.

I could write a software package that would geometrically match your pieces and get your pottery re-assembled a lot quicker... how many individual pieces have been recovered?

You and your team are doing amazing work. Thank you for sharing this with the world. I pray that you find more artifacts of palace life from before the destruction. There must be ritual items that pertain to their religious practice there.

Could you somehow scan the sherds and have an AI try to 'fit' them together ?
