I had a similar experience once. I was camping in the back of my truck and I kept getting this tap tap tap. But every time I got up to find out what the hell was doing the tapping there was nothing around. So I walked away from the truck about 30 yards and just kept watching. Within about 5 minutes a red cardinal flew down landed on my passenger side mirror and was leaning over looking at his reflection and attacking it. Turned out that was the noise A stupid bird attacking his reflection in my passenger side mirror.

One time I tied bag of trash to van rear door hinge, forgot all about it at bed time. Gust of wind flared up 1am, all of a sudden woke up to Bam ! Bam! Bam! at back corner. Wind was slamming bag of trash against the van giving biggest scare ever.

A guy we met in Baja said that he was sleeping in Colorado in his van when he heard some noise outside. He forgot to bring in the trash so a bear is clearly digging through the garbage looking for scraps. A few moments later the van starts moving a bit and the bear is apparently climbing the ladder - and the guy says that at that point he starts wondering what the bear is after on the roof. Within a few seconds, through his roof vent, he sees the light from a flashlight. It’s a person - obviously. So he yells out something along the lines of I have a gun, I don’t mind putting a few holes in my roof, but I really don’t want to shoot anyone. And, according to the guy telling me the story… the guy on the roof quickly scrambles to get off and proceeds to run to a car waiting about 200 meters away. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t think he actually even had a gun but the bluff apparently worked. Another, more credible story, was a friend of mine was wild camping in NM on his way to Texas and some crackhead tried to climb the ladder to his tent while he’s sleeping. Fortunately he hear him coming and pretty much as soon as he touched the ladder my buddy unzipped his tent and let his 150-ish pound dog stick his head out of the tent to see what’s going on. Which made the crackhead fall backwards on to his butt and then struggle to not trip over himself as he tried to run away from the truck.

When I lived in the woods in Florida I started getting visits from the wildlife. I used trip wires that activated my alarm I used lights and buzzers and if you made it pass that I used electric fence shockers. The best part of my protection was my fighting chickens, they ran free on my land and would attack if they thought you didn't belong , the raids on my property stopped

A bat 🦇 perhaps? My ex used to mention that someone knocked at the back door and ran off on several occasions. We had a creaky wood fence so that was not an easy task. Heard it myself a few times. Was finally in position to view as it happened. A woodpecker would swoop in and tap on the eaves and swoop out.🤦🏻 Of course it could be someone testing to see if the van is occupied and how you might react to decide if they want to take something or simply run you off. Cameras might be in order. A cheap nanny cam or deer cam will do.

it's almost always a squirrel or a raccoon that goes "tap" in the night. But sometimes it's a drunk in a blue van. And yes, good way to get shot.

My area as a fire lookout, SW Oregon. I have worked 5 lookouts, Grants Pass and Medford area. Some sketchy people around. It's Douglas fir. I retired forestry a few years ago. People would visit me in lookouts. Some people scared me. I wouldn't let them in. I saw good people mostly. Some not so good people. When I started lookout work. I asked my Supervisor if I could have a gun. He told me. I could have anything that I would have at home. I never used the gun. But nice to have it. My very first visitor. Super nice man. Bear hunter scouting for new areas to hunt. From Glide. Viet namn vet. He stayed hours. It was overcast, but hot. I had the thousand yard stare happening. A fire. Plume of smoke coming straight up from a 7700 foot high mountain. The vet was there. I diàled in that fire. I knew it's loci. Even though the mountain was obscurred by clouds. The column of smoke. It was there. My first visitor. And a fire while he was present. I reported it.

You never know. One trip Im sleeping in my Tent Cot and had a weird dream that an animal was trying to claw its way inside. I wake up and laugh at myself until I see tears in the fabric on the back side. Holy Crap! Then when Im packing up and bagging the Tent Cot, I see where the storage bag rubbed on something during the rocky drive in which caused the "tears' in the fabric. I laughed harder at myself. However, i have heard things bump in the night.

I covered almost all of northern Oregon as a Fema disaster worker during the wildfires a few years back. Detroit Lakes was wiped out. Driving around some of those forest roads and fire trails gave me the heebie jeebies on more than one occasion. Im an intuitive person. If Bigfoot is real, they would definitely be in those mountains.

I actually lived at Detroit Lake on santiam ave and worked at Stuckert Lumber in Idana over 40 years ago,the area was beautiful and the nearby hot springs were amazing!

Yes, I have an old dresser in my bedroom that does that when I sleep with my window open. It pops and cracks really loudly. It was very alarming the first few times it did it and I had no idea what was going on.

I was camping in a rest area in N Alberta, van started rocking, it was a bear rubbing his back at corner of the van. I was relieved, better than chasing off humans.

I had my van shake in redwood forest around 11 pm. I was in a turn-off no houses middle of nowhere. That was the last time I boonedocked in forest alone I go to campgrounds now.

Got woken up early once by a bird walking and tapping on my solar panals!! Kept it up for a good 20 minutes, that's all I could handle before opening up the back door and seen it had gotten a claw caught in a strap somehow that was holding the rack down ( yah I rigged it, after someone tried to steal the rack with the panel and I couldn't find the skrews to the brackets to fix it properly! It worked for 2 months till I got back to let boss figure it out!) But noise at night definitely means I'm moving on, as soon as I can, in the morning!!

This happened to me way back in the forest along the snake river in Idaho. There was nobody but me. I was planning to take the long way around Yellowstone the next day. Beautiful spot. I usually just stop breathing until I pass out and I'm still alive come morning.

Like you, I try and find the deepest, darkest spots each night. Only once did someone knock on my windows, and that was four police officers near Kila, Montana. They told me I could finish the night there, but I shouldn't do it again since the area is riddled with substance abuse. I have to drive an hour at least out of town to escape, but I manage to find some great spots once in a while. Great video, Matt. I'm hitting the bell.

We've had the trailer thumped on and tapped on twice, both times in the middle of nowhere. We think the thump was a small bear, judging by the scat and tracks we found, but the "tap tap tap tap tap" was very unnerving and is still unexplained. In your case, could it have been the van body cooling down? Our trailer makes noise from that sometimes late at night.

Retorque your solar panel roof racks. The . In relation to where you're hearing the noise I would bet it's the roof rack mounting brackets for your solar panels. expansion and contraction will cause those brackets to shift a little bit and its going to cause a popping noise.

I never pull over a park to spend the night on the main roads like you are parked. Usually only hunters will be off scouting around on the spur roads. It sounds like Bear Camp Rd between Grants Pass and the coast. Beautiful country with bears, cougar and yes Sasquach. You hear a big one roar/scream and you feel it in your body then you know.

I'm glad you're finding out that a lot of these pullouts work. Sure they might not have amenities like campgrounds but as you're showing many have great views, and best of all, SOLITUDE. Just drive around of those forest roads long enough and you'll always find a spot

I was in Grants Pass after Shasta Ca. The took 199 to Red Wood National Park, lots of free dispersed around,ost my gps...just drove music caffiene and bling Sea Coast "welcome to California" no biggy gas was $4.45..zero heat dome very chill area..thro my pride out da door and Walmart..perfection.. 😀 days on the coast, literally 20O feet from salt water..have fun Stan..

I've laid in bed here in certain noises against my van as well. Sometimes realizing it can't be trees cuz there's none around. I've never figured out the noise nor did I ever go out and look.

Weird about the noises. Any big moths or beetles at night? I've had a couple of bad experiences when I've been visible from the road, so I try to stay a bit more out of sight these days unless I'm in an area with other campers.
