Thanks Luke for your candid review of your evening session. Sometimes the complexity of what "we do" is lost on those who are not in the hobby and they never realize how hard and frustrating this hobby can be (at times).

Thanks for the little reminder that sometimes it's nice to just have an auxiliary rig that just works without all the fuss. Allows you to recoup and put your mind at ease to tackle the more complicated but finicky equipment 🙂 Happy you had some clear skies and beautiful image!

Very true Dave my friend!! - when everything else was going wrong with the other rigs it was nice to just have something there working away quietly without fuss, it kinda took the pressure off a bit otherwise I'd really have felt like I wasted the night!

couldn’t agree more luke, there’s so many things we can keep on adding to our setups to get marginal improvements from, but it’s so easy to forget how important simplicity can be. i think that’s one of the reasons i’ve still stuck with DSLRs and standalone autoguiders for so long- it’s simple to troubleshoot and it makes me feel more connected to what i’m shooting. just like how i want to upgrade my mount to a harmonic drive but my main gripe is keeping me back- none of them have an optical polar scope! i just really resist needing a laptop in the field i think, as do i resist getting stuck in the ZWO ecosystem. but, i just got hired for maybe the best job i could hope for for me right now, at my local telescope store! it’s just run by two guys who took over the business and have been growing it, and they’ve gotten to the point where they need an extra hand managing everything :) so maybe i will have to dip my toes into the more modern mounts and cameras after all. anyways, clear skies luke!

Aw mate that's awesome!! huge congratulations on your new job, I bet that'll be such a rewarding career for you! :-) Definitely give these mounts a chance if you can, affording yourself a certain amount of automation/ease of use can really elevate your enjoyment I feel, hence I enjoy this rig so much! Congratulations again and clear skies :-)

Top Image Luke, and a really good looking set up. I use an ASI mini to control my grab and go set up, and it works great. The only problem is of course I can't use my Altair Astro Cameras with it. It's not a big deal anyway as my main rig is controlled by an Eagle mini pc on which I have Installed Sharp Cap, NINA and APT, though these days I just use Sharp Cap, I find it the easiest to use. For me, for anyone on a tight budget who uses ZWO cameras or supported Canon and Nikon DSLRs, The ASI mini has to be the best buy around. OK, it doesn't have provisions for a light panel or field rotation control, but if you're on a tight budget you probably won't be buying this type of gear anyway. I also believe the mini doesn't work with some of the more expensive ZWO cameras. It still does most of the things the ASIAir Pro does but is only just over half the price. And, most importantly, it works! I now have a rig I can have permanently set up and should I get an unexpected clear spell, I can take outside and be imaging within minutes.
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 3 месяца назад
That's excellent mate, having a rig you can just quite literally 'grab and go' with is a major boon, I bet you'll get more imaging done than ever before really :-) Clear skies to you!

I love your channel lukomatico, your videos quality is getting better and better. I would love to see your channel grow, I personally think that there is one thing you could do, that could give you some extra audience. How about just simple saying what kind of object do you photograph, where is it exactly, what size it is, how far and more interesting details. I would love to watch the video and learn something at the same time but almost none makes this kind of videos. Just an idea but think about it : ) Good luck anyway mate!

Clouds came in 1pm onwards for me, so i got half the data i need.. but I can see you took advantage of this long awaited night and had 4 rigs running.. did you get time for a brew? The G60 is a lovely scope and very comparable to my FRA300...

Really nice image! I am curious as to what your power source was, looks like a Jackery? I ask because I am trying to power an AM3, ASI Air Plus and the ZWO ASI555MC Pro with a Jackery 240, and the mount throws an error that it does not have enough power to slew. The ASI Air shows less than 11V, and that is no good as well. Perhaps I need a more "robust" power supply? Thanks!
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 3 месяца назад
Hey mate, thank you!! I do indeed use a jackery explorer 500, but I also have two other smaller power supplies which work equally well! Try to go direct from the 12v socket if you can, otherwise you'll need a good quality 240-12.4v adapter brick and plug into the inverter :-) cheers!

@@lukomatico Thanks for the reply. I purchased the Pegasus Pocket Power Box Micro, and connected the AM3, ASI Air Plus, and my ASI533 to individual DC outlets on the Pegasus. Nothing is connected to any DC Out on the ASI Air. Using the Auto Socket on the Jackery, it is supposed to output12V@10Amps (so they say). Not sure why this won't power these three items, but anyway thanks again!
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 3 месяца назад
I'd be tempted to remove the ppb+ from the loop and use the asiair power outlets, it may help! Worth a check in any case, the asiair has always powered everything without issue for me 👍 Good luck mate!

Thanks Luke. Be interested to know what was happening in the observatory! Probably the one clear night in 6 weeks over here in south Cumbria and I decided to have another try with Nina 🙂‍↕️😭🫨😤😤😤nearly put a match to the observatory at 1:30am and went to bed thinking foolishly I might sleep. Hanged if I can get the EQ8 R to reliably connect and track. Back to the good old ASIAIR again now and hoping for a clear night or two before nights get too short again. Clear skies

Oh mate that sounds like it was a nightmare!! I actually don't know what was even going wrong in the obsy that night, mounts not connecting, cameras not connecting, focusers not connecting, - no reasons as to why! 😂 Such a pain. After a few restarts of the Observatory pc's all the issues mysteriously vanished!
