Just had a weird dream where I woke up abandoned on an ice sheet and then spent all my building supplies to smelt all the nonexistent scrap and then just about starved to death before the plague got me.

Fun fact: you can extend how long a pawn can survive with a set amount of food by feeding them only when their food meter is close to zero. Whenever the food meter is below the notches, it goes down slower. Like 4 times slower when it is below both notches and the pawn is ravenously hungry. You don't want them to become malnourished because then their hunger rate goes up. By completely exhausting the food meter before you eat, your 0.9 nutrition that a single meal gives will be equivalent to 1.4 nutrition eaten when the pawn is fed. The most extreme and micromanagey version of this is having a food like insect jelly and letting your pawn eat portions of 2 units at a time right before starvation so that the pawn is constantly ravenously hungry. They can survive on 8 insect jelly per day in this way. Only downside is the mood debuffs and having to make sure that they dont start to starve.

I guess we all saw that hope it's the superior pet. She hold that thrumbo like a champ. Definetely earned a spot in the colony I guess.

Oh, the drama in this one is high! Some ice sheet tips: You'll need to keep the training up on the warg. Thankfully Fatmanslim has a six in handling and you only need a five. It won't be good for mood, but having your new, no doubt temporary recruit butcher the corpses will extend your training meat supply (and give you something to trade, ewww). Butchering yields more nutrition than raw corpses. This is a little exploity, but instead of killing the new recruit straight off you have them settle a second colony to generate events (or you could do this with Fatman). The downside of sending the new recruit is that you'll have the "colonist left unburied" debuff until the body deteriorates. Two periods of rest will give ensure that the "well-rested" and "comfortable" mood buffs last all day. It will also ensure you have enough rest in case of a raid. Since you are just researching anyway you won't lose much productivity. Leaving meals outside is a good way to lure animals to your door so you don't have to traipse across the map to hunt them. If you can get 125 steel a nutrient paste dispenser would really extend your food supplies, but I'm not sure if you can take the mood penalty (and since cooking is a double passion, it's a good way to keep your mood up). Tribalwear has very good cold insulation. If you make it sooner rather than later you'll be able to sell your shirt and pants for a higher price.

if you slap another door with a one tile gap from the first door it REALLY helps preserve the heat in the building, also tribalwear is better for ice sheet than pants/shirt

As a small tip, animals actually produce heat based on their body size, so locking animals in a base can help keep the temperature of a base up and if you lock them to an area they wont eat your meals either

If you're willing to "waste" 1 steel, you may invest on a 1 tile of "conduit switch", an isolated power conduit, you reconnect something to it to quickly turn it off, you can bulk connect and disconnect power consuming "stuff" from the grid, it removes the need for your pawn to manually switch, I usually build it under chairs or other non powered buildings

I recently did a nomadic tribal game inspired by your nomad series and found that the pain is virtue meme was incredibly useful for staving off mood breaks. Suddenly comfort doesn’t even matter, I don’t think they even care about sleeping in the heat or cold. I also never realised that the tribal colonists don’t get an ate without table debuff, unless that was the pain is virtue meme too, I wasn’t actually sure

When I play sea ice I always try to get deep drills as soon as a stone meteorite lands since whenever you reload a save with a meteorite it turns the ice into drillable stone. For unlimited building supplies.

On my own time on the ice I found you can control exactly what the wildlife will do just by moving a meal inside/outside. If there is no food on the map animals will leave, but you can drive every hare on the map right to your warg with a meal outside. Make a silver freezer box and hold the door open when you want to attract the caribou, or close it off and they’ll all leave. Can be useful to juggle the polar bears between hunting you and going for the easy meal.

Ah, borderline starving pawns until their food meter is down to 10%. I've been there. On the Ice this reminds me so much of Frostpunk. While your new hut is more material/space efficient with its 39 tiles only slightly smaller than your 7x7 room, it should be less efficient heat wise. According to the wiki "temperature equalization with the outside is proportional the length of the perimeter of the room in question" and now your longest length is 8. Not relevant with current outside temperature, but that might change once "summer" is over and a thing to keep in mind should you ever play on a colder planet. And remember, you can take advantage of wild animals going for your meals outside to lure them to your hut. That way you don't have to walk across the map for a single hare. Oh and put things of value inside before the raid, otherwise they might just decide to steal stuff ruining your plan

Do you know the RandomPlus mod? You can set the minimum requirements (e.g. 6 in construction) and then it just randomizes until it finds someone that fills this requirement. I like this mod because it only does the randomizing for you. If I'm randomizing too often I tend to click past the pawn I was looking for, so that mod really helps. And this mod doesn't generate pawns or anything, so if you set your requirements too high, it just won't find anyone.

1) The cheapest possible freezer would be to add a wall to the "inside" of a corner, and replace the outside corner with a door. Alternatively, add a wall and door to one of the outside diagonals. Hold the freezer door open (unless not trying to lure wild animals) to keep the freezer cold. This would be, of course, a massive investment, so you may be better off investing in a battery instead. X = floor, D = Door, O = Wall XXDXX XOXOX OXOXO You could make the freezer bigger, a 5 tile + shape, by spending 2 more walls. 2) I am of the opinion that your initial hut is still too big. 3) You can crank the heater higher to have more of a buffer for when the heater fails.

43:38 If you have wild animals trying to eat your food but you don't want to hurt them, a good trick is to shoot at something near them. The shots landing will scare off animals for a bit. A bit micromanagey but will help in situations like this. Just make sure they aren't in the way to receive friendly fire.

I was in a similar situation with one tribal raid that Francis is about to be in if he accepts the quest. Brought my pawn in position, have an animal blocker in the door and await them. They were faster than my pawn and he only had a shooting skill of roughly -5. They ran to my stockpile in front of the door, grabbed some metal and just legged it. That moment still pisses me off.

You can change the pawns' food restrictions so that they will only eat meals and will stay away from uncooked food. I think you edit them in the "Assign" tab.

If mood is super important you should consider moving your pawns over to a biphasic sleep schedule. It makes sure they always have their mood boosts when their sleep is split up into two sections. One downside is that if your pawns are working a long way away from their bed it will cut into productivity each time they make a trip back and forth. But this is a barren flat field of ice. You are only away from the bed if you are shooting something. You can afford the half second it takes and you lose no productivity.

I think the research bench was botched more because it was constructed in the dark, rather than construction. Heater only gives 1 square of light around it. Fun vid though. Very glad I am on icesheet, even though max temp is rarely better than -80

You should also be able to make horseshoe pins out of silver to squeeze a bit of steel out. And you can manually zone a roof out over wood etc for slower degrading. I think you figured that part out by the shadow in the video, but just in case viewers haven't known. Edit: 42:20 reveals the roof, good job. Hope the incoming raids don't smash your wind turbine.

Not sure if it was patched but last time i checked there was a cheeky way to kill thrumbo by attacking when it leaves, the logic telling them to gtfo overrides the manhunter logic, so you're free to shoot them down as they slowly waddle away.

Sometimes you just gotta have hope.

I just started my first ice sheet run yesterday, what a coincidence! By the way, I've found that you can fight single thrumbos safely with one pawn by kiting them to a wooden door and repairing it as they bash it. They dont aggro long enough to break the door and when they wander off you can poke your head out and take more shots.

This is so tense; I found myself holding my breath while you built that stove 😄

You can forbid your pawns from eating raw meat eggs etc in food policy. You also can temporary switch him to "none" policy which forbids him from eating anything rather than forbidding all of the available food Items manually. It takes only a few seconds to change might be helpful. Also this way you can't miss some pice of food unforbidden.

Generally in sea ice challenge if your hoping to having the cold actually kill your enemies your going to need to go to the actually coldest spot on the planet for a hope in hell of breaking even. Half of the year, half of the time you might have your threat die from exposure.

I thought you were crazy to take on that thrumbo. Little did I know.

Knuckles would just punch the ice and ride an iceberg all the way to warm sunny beach. Icesheet challenge solved.

You can totally 1v1 a thrumbo in this scenario without an animal. Hit it once close to your base, run inside, repair the door. If you start repair imidiately, the thrumbo will stop attacking the door before it breaks - even with a wooden door. Once it moves far enough away form your door you can repeat it, till it will bleed out. If you aggro 2 thrumbos your dead though.

Hydroponics -> packed survival meals -> silver, might be better than smelter

I have done a vanilla ice sheet on ocean tile before, its tough. I find its just over the top to do once you have done it. I had my own idea for an ice sheet after that. no cannibals (makes it too easy) I had a mod that added permanent cold snap on top of another, with coldest planet settings. ( a third stacking cold snap could happen temporarily) (I got -45 C to -120 C temps ranges) depending on season, location to pole, and events average -90 C I did a pt buy ( for you skills with prepare carefully) limits to what your pawn can have passion in (4 minor 2 major), Construction was set at a base of 6 all other skills base of 2 (back ground could change this to higher) ( i did 16 pts as my spend with a max of 8 in any skill) YOU MUST Keep your starting animal alive for at least the first 5 years or its game over. ( tho i got to pick what animal with limits to size, just dont pick heavy eaters fyi) (Artic wolf or something that could handle cold or some modded alpha animals if i got animal handling skills) I had several rules for creation and starting items but all of it was designed so that it was not making it improbable just barely acceptable for some things. like more steel at start not much but a little. I have not put all the exact rules here down but, following this I had more enjoyment of this type of run each time i did it after that first vanilla. Then again I use mods a lot now that I would not like to remove even for a challenge cause they help me enjoy the game. Tho fishing made ice sheet much easier later on mid to late game. Still tho due to mech clusters now, I prefer Ice sheets on rocky tiles for mountain bases still. If i did a run like this. I already achieved a ocean ice sheet run, id rather watch you then do another myself XD.
