My memories about my Satellite troubles relate to much easier to troubleshoot issues. The first thing was that the power switch failed and I could not get a proper replacement. I tried to just turn the volume all the way down (for the night...). But the audio section generated still too much hissing (white noise) for my sleeping desire. So I studied the signal levels around the volume control and concluded that I could increase the signal to the volume control potentiometer 10-fold and then attenuate the gain at the following transistor stage by a factor of 10. The hiss was gone, or at least low enough to let me sleep. Some years later, there appeared a hum, when operated from the AC. As I did not want to use batteries all the time, I built a simple regulated AC to DC power supply with an in-line AC switch and that is how the Satellite was used for the following decades by my mother and then my brother, until the TV took over as the news source just a few years ago.

That was quite the adventure Manuel, nice bit of sleuthing though. As others have said you could try heating the ferrite collar, you could test first by touching your iron on the exposed glue to see if it responds. As a repair, if the collar won't come off cleanly, you could maybe have someone 3D print a new former (not easy, not impossible) and rewind the coils... thinking out loud 🤔

The latter option seems to be the answer. I’ve made a little progress but not as good as I’d hoped.

Manuel, Happy New Year! Nothing stupid about what you're doing. Your aim is to follow through all the problems associated with the repair of an old radio. This is all learning and learning is good. Any day when we can learn something is a good day. Please keep up as you have been and don't change a thing. I thoroughly enjoy watching you repair these old radios. Sincerely,...

Another great video and what I really like is your honesty in showing the ways in which you couldve come to a solution quicker. Thats worth just as much as going straight to the culprit in terms of learning. As you may recall I am totally new to radios and my experience is in auto restoration. This radio malarkey was supposed to give me a break from the cars but its turning into a whole other monster lol. Anyway I have had a similar situation with a small bonded part that needed disassembly that had a glue streak through it. It took a little bit of doing but in the end I managed to find the smallest solder tip I had and turn it down to the thickness of a needle. I then put it in the iron and let the modified tip melt its way into the bonding. I had the temp set just enough to soften the bonding but not high enough to turn the composite material to mush. If all else fails it may be you "Get out of Jail card" as it was for me. Regards Mark

Firstly - Happy New Year. I didn't see that as stupid. From my perspective you followed the signal logically through the antenna stages to the RF preamp and determined the problem was after that stage and then you went to the variable inductors after the RF preamp. Of course we do tend to be our own harshest judges. Very interesting and informative video - I learned something new again. Thank you.

Happy new year, Manuel! Good fault finding, that open preselector coil I believe you will have to source from a "junk" Satellit. I believe viewers will be most interested to send you one if they have. And, it works somewhat well without it also. Looking forward to your new projects!

Hi Manuel, I,m currently working on a radio cassette from 1973 with similar issues. Everything works but it's almost deaf to world. I can pick up a very strong station that is 5km away, but nothing else. Touch the ferite antenae and it changes noise etc. However, it doesn't have those terrible variable inductors, so it's probably the mixer transistor that is glued in a clump with 5 other transistors. Your investigation reminded me of a radio that would only power up with the switch held half way. I tried to work it out over six months, there was not schematic for that one either, then I noticed a tiny inductor inside the power switch, replaced that and bingo! Good detective work to a tricky problem.

That might have given you the run around Manuel but it’s a great bit of fault finding. Those German schematics are not the easiest to get around. It’s a shame that the coil is open. I’d be tempted to try a bit of hot air in the ferrite to try and release the glue. You’ve got nothing to lose really. I don’t think I have anything like that but I will look. Graham

It's been so long that I had forgotten that this thing has 3 not just 2 dial strings. And you're probably missing the red pointer for that SW 2-9 drum section also... Btw, that drum can be removed, but you need to remove all the plastic dial sections from it first. Their clicked in place at the bottom. Fortunately their numbered so you can get them back in the right order. Well this is a fun radio to work on for sure, it requires both electronic and mecanical skills. That coil is already broken, so trying to open it could only result in you fixing it, or making it more broken. Maybe soak it in warm soapy water for some time? Wish you good luck and have fun in the process.

What a lovely and perfect design for a household receiver! I would try to disassemble the coil - soak it in a solvent, then heat it up with a hairdryer. P.S. It was not a mistake, it's just that you are an insidious schemer ))))

@@electronicsoldandnew I thought a little more ... There are two unique things in this coil - the ferrite shield and the number of turns. If the service manual contains information about this, then you can try to pick up a similar tube and wind a new coil using the screen from the old one. This is already the most extreme case. It is a pity that such an elegant solution of "pre-selector" has not been used in different models and is not widespread that deprived us the availability of a large number of spare parts.
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 2 года назад
True. I can’t find any info on the specs of these coils, unfortunately
@sincerelyyours7538

Great troubleshooting on that buggered coil! Could the open have been caused during the radio's manufacture? Worse things have happened though usually to lesser quality radios, and consumers often don't know the difference. They just don't bother tuning the bands that don't seem to work well. Can you make an educated guess as to the inductance of the coil, then test a few candidates and replace it with one that works the best? Looks like the position of the sliding slug can be adjusted up or down a bit as well for some slight variability. In the mean time, a soak in some mild solvent or some carefully applied heat from a hair blower might loosen up the glue enough to pull the plastic piece out of the ferrite tube.
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 2 года назад
I think the glue may have become corrosive with age and eaten up the wires. I’m going to try and open it up to find out. I have received many great suggestions and will try to get it out somehow.

Eliminating the tuned circuit in the collector of the RF amp will lower the RF gain, and also subject the mixer to substantially more cross mod due to out of band signals not attenuated by the filter. With AM BC this really wont be a great issue. Some Grundig and Philips type components are very cheaply made.

They could have simplified things if they had used the SO42P for the Mixer and Local Oscillator and the MC1350 for IF amplification duties and a bridge rectifier for AM demod duty and using crystal filters for 10.240Mhz and 455Khz.
