Ancient number systems and ancient concepts of time are a challenge to accurately place some of the events in the Old Testament. Our modern concept of recording dates is very accurate, but ancient people were not nearly as concerned as we are. Honorific ages were used in telling the stories and exploits of important individuals, and number systems were not always base ten.
Dr. Collins and Dr. Byers discuss the ages of the Patriarchs and how this relates to when Abraham lived, and thus when Sodom would have been destroyed. They give special credit to a new book on the subject of the age of Abraham. It is titled, How Old Was Father Abraham? by Dr. Craig Olson.

Awesome videos! Keep 'em coming! One question though, with the city existing for such a long time and Sodom being one of the biggest cities in the southern Levant - have y'all found any evidence of writing? I understand that airburst events might have destroyed everything but I'm curious as to any kind of archive that might have existed in the palace or temple complex.

Can we take the later dates at face value, such as David's age at death (70)?

Taking the Bible, in particular the book of Genesis, in the context which it was written is a particularly difficult thing for us. Firstly, because we're still learning new things about how that world operated regularly. We don't know everything and new evidence could come along that can shed new light on how to interpret this. Secondly, because it's just so different than how we want to think and view the world. Even regarding ages as honorific or symbolic tools, I get it, this isn't the first time I've heard it, I like the idea, it makes sense and is probably how it works, but in the back of my brain my 21c sensibilities keep whispering, "Yes, but why couldn't they just...", "It wouldn't have been that hard to..." but it's just not what they were interested in communicating in their narratives.

near eastern chronology is underpinned by faulty Egyptian dates tho and those are 500 years too far back, delete that and everything will line up just fine I think.

So an "honorific" culture would tell their descendants that this important 17-minute video lasted more like 102 minutes, but a less-important 17-minute video about Bishop Ussher's academic achievements only lasted about 3 minutes. 🤪

I could not disagree more. And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. And Abram was *fourscore and six years old* when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram. {Genesis 16:15-16} And Abraham was *ninety years old and nine* when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son was *thirteen years old* when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. {Genesis 17:24-25} And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. And Abraham was an *hundred years old* when his son Isaac was born unto him. {Genesis 21:4-5} And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an *hundred and thirty years* few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, *and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers* in the days of their pilgrimage. And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt *seventeen years* so the whole age of Jacob was an *hundred forty and seven years* {Genesis 47:9, 27}
