Great analogies! Interesting thing is in the last few years there is increased doubt about how often the Somogyi effect happens or if it even exists at all! I recently found two studies showing those with early morning hypoglycemia rarely get morning hyperglycemia, but most get morning hypoglycemia.

Crystal, I get this, it’s a real pain, I’ve tried all different methods of eating and dosing and just can’t get the balance right. I’m Type 1, since June 2013.

YES!!! I LOVE this question, Sabrina! I actually have those video training's inside the NursingSOS Membership Community already. They just aren't up here on RU-vid. You can check out all the details on the membership community here if you'd like. Enrollment is closing this Friday, just FYI. :) I hope to see you inside! > > membership.nursingschoolofsuccess.com/

Having had type1 for 10 years I’ve only just heard of this and it’s difference with “dawn effect”. I get high blood sugar most mornings and it’s frustrating, sometimes taking hours to get “normal again” I’ve tried eating later/insulin later/skipping breakfast until later on and a bunch of other things, and it still happens. Sometimes I have woke as high as 18 mmol.

So when the liver releases extra sugar, is that what causes you to wake up? I have been waking up in the middle of the night for years now, and I never feel as awake any other part of the day than this. Is this because I am on a sugar high? I am currently up after waking up at 3 am and too awake to go back to sleep.

is Somogyi effect a result of an inappropriate dose of insulin? can it be prevented by adjusting the dose / type of insulin?
@NursingSOS
@NursingSOS 4 года назад
The Somogyi effect happens without the help of administering insulin. It is the natural pattern of blood sugar overnight that can happen. it can be exaggerated by an inappropriate dose of insulin. Thanks for being here, Ronna Zhou!

Yes, the intervention in the Somogyi effect is to reduce the bedtime dose of insulin.
