Did you know that Witcher is a killer of witches, in the older novels, the authors mention this vocabulary definition. The parallel is equal to the scientist is named, with his last name, after a disease he discovers. He has or others eventually discover the remedy, as then it is given to the diseased. Sometimes the name of the disease is given as the first diseased person’s last name. Or, a famous patient, or the one with the cure. The original discoverer or rather, researcher, of the disease usually gets to name the disease and many scientists want his name to be the name of the disease, as a posterity gift to be able to one day show that he is one who uncovered a deadly attack on our society. It is well noted in the science and medical communities. It is an honour to a dedicated researcher.
This work is at its essence, like a painting painted on an infinite canvas at an ever faster pace but never able to find an end. should I play the whole trilogy or just Witcher 3? I kinda like to know what's going on with a game's storyline if possible. So, I would like to know if I need to play Witcher 1 and 2 in order to have a clue what's going on in Witcher 3.

gblakney1 not necessary you can read the books first to understand the story than the games in order of course. So you won’t get confused of the questions they ask in Witcher 3.
