From my VHS archives comes this recording of Son Volt playing live on Late Night With Conan O'Brien in April 1996. I believe this might be Son Volt's first national TV appear, promoting the Trace album which had been released in Autumn 1995. I haven't found this particular performance elsewhere on RU-vid, so this may be something of a rarity.
Sadly, I didn't always get a great signal for my local NBC station and I was using a lesser quality VCR by this point (one which recorded only in mono). So we're stuck here with an image with plenty of ghosting and a mono soundtrack. But the sound is still decent and the image is still watchable, so I figured it was worth sharing regardless. Enjoy!

The Boquist Boys father was Harry Boquist--clarinet and saxophone genius during the big band era. They grew up next to a dairy farm and had access to the woods in between Carroll's farm and Rosemount High School--petrified forest, cow pies and the perfect percolation for Son Volt. Surreal happenstance....

Wow we were all so much younger 26 years ago…this was always my favorite song of theirs. I used to be way into Alternative and now I only listen to Hip Hop and SuperPop but wow this really made me close TikTok for a sec and think about what was and who we used to be. Any decent Les Paul type guitar be it a Junior or Standard through a correctly working old AC30 will sound like this. Same as Gary Moore used EV speakers with an old Marshall and Vintage Les Paul, then Slash comes along and it was a Marshall JCM800 and Les Paul with 25 Watt Green Backs and 30 Watt Black backs on the neck Pickup and people say he has Gary’s tone. Difference is Slash was pushing the speakers into distortion and Gary’s amp,Vintage Les Paul and fingers were speaking. Aside from that yes great tune and sound. Worked a gig like I have millions of times and these guys played. I was totally hoping I’d hear more from them. Have these guys faded for good? ,

I wish this hadn't been the first single off 'Trace,' especially with Son Volt making its first big TV debut. It might have been a favorite of the band's, but in any show I saw, or still find in youtube, "Windfall" and "Tear Stained Eye" are audience favorites and surely were Warner Brothers' brass favorites. They are more accessible and tell lyrical stories. Drown seems like a composite of catch phrases and chopped-up broken melodies.

his record label was probably hoping to cash in on the 90's run of rock music that had a little bit of country influence, jacob dylan, gin blossoms, hootie and blowfish etc.... this song was a single on "alternative" rock radio, i bet alot of people probably bought the album and were surprised by the folk stuff like Windfall and Tear Stained Eye. either way Trace is one of the best albums ever recorded. it's perfect. :-)

I disagree, this is a great song and made an excellent first single. After hearing it for the very first time I rushed out and bought Trace and found it was packed with great material. But I am not so sure I would have reacted so enthusiastically had it been one of the other songs as the first song I heard by these guys.

Carter M i can understand your point, but this song kicks the most tail. It's an honest "rock song" Route was another one. Picking 1 song off that 1st album is so difficult. It was good from the beginning to the end. All killer, no filler. Hand to GOD this is one of the best Albums ever. Right up there with The Beatles, The Stones, Zepplin, and pink floyd.

Farrar is the revolutionary man of alternative country! Give Jeff Tweedy from Wilco credit for forcing his way into the band, "Uncle Tupelo", to provide the unique sound, which was Jay's band. Jeff Tweedy mentioned, Jay & I were opposites, he was too old school for me & my style began to turn him off. Then Wilco began. (Paraphrased) It would be cool to see them unite again, maybe do a live tour of only Uncle Tupelo songs & creat an album.

I like Son Volts original line up here. But let's understand the facts : Son Volt , Uncle Tuepelo & Wilco didn't invent anything ! Alternative country what a crock ! A bunch of alternative music push nonsense ! All the bands mentioned were in awe and wanting to emulate California's great band The Long Ryders of the 80s ! Know your history people !

should have cranked it louder and blown the audience away, as he did with Tupelo. He was not very inspired nor the song was very inspiring. Most people who watch that think he's a grunge wannabe. With the exception of some good songs, Sonvolt kind of sucked, reminiscent of Jay's crap like "Anodyne", which they played both times in Tupelo's final 2 shows in St. Louis and where I was at both.
