Mary, in response to the Banks children saying she doesn't love them: "The universe is small, The sun is blue; And summer follows fall While spring is freezing. And the ocean's filled with sugar, And I'm sure that the grass is pink. And the night is another thing I am certain of - It's a curtain of Ink. The moon is made of cheese, The earth is flat, And money grows on trees, And that is that. And love is just a frivolous game that soon begins to pall; Yes, the sun is blue and I don't love you at all."
Excellent! Thanks for posting. Sondheim writes about this in the second volume of his collected lyrics ('Look, I Made a Hat'). He says it was written "for a situation in which the Banks children, Mary's wards, are complaining that she doesn't love them enough."
one of my favorite recordings, have seen it online before, but always have to search hard for it again. so happy to see this one youtube. honestly one of my favorite sondheim songs. find myself singing this tune a lot. truly the master. i can only see broadway turning more and more into a capitalist venture after his death.
No, read the caption. He didn't have the rights, he wrote it as a teen under Hammerstein's guidance, knowing that Bea Lillie was looking to create a Broadway musical of it for herself. Oscar would have known Bea, Rodgers and Hart wrote a show for her in 1928.
@@jonthesYT that's not what aim talking about. Someone wrote that P.L. Travers approached Sondheim about POPPINS after seeing INTO THE WOODS, which would have been in the late 1980s.
