I'm only realizing now that almost every South Korean film I've ever been recommended by friends, many of which are the most critically acclaimed South Korean films, has this guy in it in one way or another.. he's insane at recognizing great scripts and then absolutely delivers with every performance.
I've never seen Song Kang-Ho being interviewed like this; I've only seen him in movies, and he's such an amazing character actor that I've never known what he was like in real life. It's a treat to see him just laughing and chatting like this, after I've watched him play so many tortured characters.
I met him once when I was about 11 yrs old at a playground near my apartment- he was taking a break or probably watching over his kid also playing. Recognised him and got an autograph behind my dad's business card I happend to have then. I still remember how humble he was towards me and my friend- just bunch of kids. He really hasn't changed-
Im a HUGE fan of Song Kang Ho! Grew up seeing him on the big screen since JSA but never got to see an overview of his career with a long interview like this!! What an amazing surprise. I love his passion for acting and perspective on success. He truly has his eyes set on something pure that is beyond awards or recognition, and i think that’s what shows and sets him apart
If Hollywood has Tom Hanks, then korea has Song Kang Ho. Not comparing or anything, but they both have this quality to single-handedly hold the story on their own, can capture your attention with their portrayal of characters, such is their charisma on screen. They have this grandness about them but at the same time are able to feel relatable to us. I wanna see both of these actors together in a single frame once in my life 🙏
I've been watching his films for 20 years now. One of the most talented actors out there surely. I think going for international actors is a good idea, I hope it continues.
Song Kang-Ho is hands down one of the best actors of this generation. His ensemble scenes in Memories of Murder, his physical comedy, his glances, his faces when he's not speaking or emoting at all, like his exhausted face in Parasite... superb.
Song Kang-Ho embodies the humble, quirky and rustic identity of the Korean culture. This is why he appears in so many Korean classics playing the most average Korean man who constantly gets himself in extraordinary situations.
One of the greatest actors in the world. He always gives a great performance. Please watch "Memories of Murder" "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance" "The Host" "Thirst" "Taxi Driver"
This guy has secretly been in more great movies in the 21st century than almost anyone. Song Kang-Ho is a name that should be mentioned in the conversation of the world’s best actors.
He is literally the walking history of Korean cinema and a one-of-a-kind actor. I am pleasantly surprised to see him talking about this extraordinary career with Vanity Fair! Well done and thanks!
Song Kang-Ho being embraced by US cinema fans was like a pipe dream along with in general Korean films but I’m so so happy to live in this reality. His talent is wonderful!
It can't be overstated just what a career this man has had - there are so many bona-fide iconic classics in his filmography we are talking about rarified air.
As a korean thank you Vanity Fair for interviewing Songkang Ho. I've been really enjoyed this series and I always wanted if korean actors are shown. This kind of contend, reviewing their career moives is rare to see among korean youtube content or media. but thanks to vanity fair I can see how Songkang Ho see his career and thought about each moive. This is very meaningful video for korean viewer. Thanks!
My favourite of this video series! Song is an actor to his core - his roles are so diverse yet performed with absolute precision and ‘truth’, as he says. What a legend!!
Memories of murders is to me Song kang Ho best movie till this day and arguably one the best movies I've ever seen him and Lee byung hun are some of the best actors on the planet.
I initially saw and watched him do his wonders in The Host, and was instantly made a fan. Give him the strength and vigor to do more movies we can enjoy for many years to come!
The last shot of Memories of Murder will haunt me for the rest of my days. When an actor can sear a film into your mind with just a few seconds of performance, you know he's one of the greats.
This dude captivated me with memories of murder and parasite . Since then I’ve made an effort to watch as many of his movies as possible he’s such a great actor
This interview is a gem, it's a shame it has so few views. English speaking people are lazy AF when it comes to reading subtitles. On another note, how could they leave Thirst out? One of his best movies yet
I adore his laugh! I follow his projects since I’ve discovered the Korean cinema en drama. Pity that he didn’t break down about The Taxi Driver, he was so good in it… One of the best actors of his time!
That was fascinating. I've only seen him in 2.5 movies and only couldn't finish Memories of Murder because my flight ended. Will be watching it in full soon.
LEGEND. I don't think there is one movie he is in that I don't like. There are so many incredible Korean movies but happy western audiences are slowly starting to appreciate them!
watch the trilogy! Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. It was Park Chan-wook's trilogy about 'revenge'. All 3 movies are amazing.
What a gift it is to see an interview with Song Kang-ho that has English subtitles! It’s such a rarity to be able to understand interviews with my favorite Asian actors (you MUST do one with Koji Yakusho; and I WISH you had reason to do one with Kam Woo-Sung but he hasn’t done film in years). I thank you for this wonderful little treasure!
Song Kang Ho has an AMAZING acting role history and it speaks to the type of actor he is that he can relate on a humanistic level across all his films...
He seems absolutely wonderful. I still remember when they did a press release for Parasite with the entire cast. He was the only one who noticed a fan who really wanted to shake Choi Woo-Sik's hand and he made sure it happened. What a lovely guy!
song kangho is such a great actor! he always gave the best performances. imagine if takeshi kaneshiro also did vanity fair career timeline... but he's been inactive for years and he's so low-key.
I watched The Host with my family as a kid and I was convinced for the longest time that it was a fever dream nightmare. That movie terrifies me still lolol.
Choi minsik is my ultimate favorite! His character assimilation is so real and delivering his emotion is so expressive and deep.. I like song kang ho also becuase his character portraiture is so NATURAL..
istg this guy has no bad film in his filmography, he's a guarantee that the film will be a top-notch! no wonder a lot of prestigious directors fell in love with him.
Song Kang-Ho and Shin Ha-Kyun are my favorite actors of all film. They never fail to give amazing performances. Some of the most gifted in the world. I willingly watch anything they're in. Memories of Murder and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance are my favorite. The best is any film with both of them together.
to think that without this guy bong joon ho's masterpieces wouldn't have been the same - i rlly think him and bong are the duo we didn't know we needed ... both of them are stupidly talented it's insane
One of the best actors alive, period. Song was in the first Korean film I ever saw waaaay back in high school, in the Old Times of Two Thousand and Three. Thanks for “Shiri”, and thanks for helping me get into South Korea’s corner of cinema.
