One of the most interesting songs, since we started the journey. We really enjoyed it through the whole time of recording, we hope you will enjoy watching it. Video posted slightly later than usually, due to length and size - the processing took longer than usual.

yes, the Fibonnaci Sequence IS everywhere. it's not just leaves and rabbits, it's everything in nature. it's a perfect structure of the random that rules the entire universe. don't see it only as an spiral, it's also about the proportions of matter (like human body). the point of the song is that we embrace that random and, just like the never ending spiral, we need to keep pushing our boundaries, to try and reach that horizon in the distance, until we "watch it bend".

I'm just like halfway through and you're talking about "push the envelope" which is a pretty obscure phrase in English, and if you don't know it, you just don't know it. :) So, an envelope can be a thing you send a letter inside. But also can be a metaphor for a border or a boundary, and is kinda assumed to be repressing or confining, an all-encompassing thing ("I was enveloped in grief" is something you could say, but it's not everyday language, it's very poetic) so "push the envelope" is a metaphor to rebel against whatever constrains you, expand your horizons. I always imagine someone trapped in a box (the envelope) and they make the box larger and larger by will, by action, by being positive, until it is no longer a prison for them And then "Watch it bend" I think is a message of hope, as in, if you push, it will bend. You might not think it would, try it and see the results I hope this made sense :D

@@initum1599 sometimes you just gotta lick the stamp and send it. Also, when he says “watch it bend”, he’s tying back to “the lines of reason”....bending the lines of reason. Later he talks about drawing outside the lines of reason. One way to interpret this song is as a metaphor for Maynard’s writing process, and his attempts to write a song incorporating the Fibonacci sequence. At first, he’s trying to follow traditional song writing boundaries. By the end, well...
@albinorhino6
@albinorhino6 3 года назад
I don’t know how old the “push the envelope” phrase is, but if I had to guess, I’d guess it comes from aviation. In flying, there are constant references to the “flight envelope”, or the “performance envelope”. When you talk about WW2 and Cold War era development of flight, test pilots and top aviators were constantly “pushing the flight envelope” as they pushed into unknown territory, exploring the boundaries of physics.

One thing I find really interesting about this song is that Maynard has said on JRE that he thinks it was kind of silly that they made the song using the sequence because at the end of the day everything ends up that way anyways. I have two issues with this. First, I don't believe that this is probably the most loved Tool song just because people know that they used the sequence. Second, at the end of the song, after the last "keep going", you can just barely hear him saying "going" again, and in live performances he does that multiple times and fades out. You can also hear that the pace of the "going" sound is increasingly delayed at the end because that's how the sequence works. You really don't hear stuff like that in music in general. On one hand I could see people say its probably not a good idea to force yourself to use something like the fibonacci sequence to make art, and that sounds reasonable, but I really wonder what incredible art we could have if more people tried it, especially in other forms of entertainment.

Came for the song, stayed for the commentary. It was really good, it's hard to find people that go beyond, "oh, hey, good drums." Well, yes, but there's a whole ass composition here. The music and lyrics both point to something way deeper. I'm of the mind that the hook of the song is that it's based on the Fibonacci sequence and it pulls in people predisposed to over thinking, over analyzing. It's really brilliant. My initial response was "cool, let's do math and feel smart", but then I was dunked into the realm of fucking spirituality and consciousness that is so innately without mind that I struggle with it.i love it. I love that it's something you can apply numbers to and still not get it. 10\10

I think that Tool is saying that reason is not the pathway to attaining enlightenment. Nature (both seen and unseen) is expressed as the hidden genius of the Fibonacci sequence that underlies the universe, but it's not accessible via reason. Or, at least, identifying the sequence doesn't bring us any closer to truth. Instead, we are afforded an equivalent of the truth that lives only in our imagination, but not throughout our being and experience. Spiritual enlightenment must be experienced by drawing "outside the lines of reason." The goal is to "swing on the spiral of our divinity" during our human lifetime. Rather than trolling, I think that Tool is providing a useful example in the form of the song. Overthinking and overanalyzing is what brings us to an understanding of the structure of the song, but how does this really increase our enjoyment of the song? We feel accomplishment in the understanding and identification of a purely intellectual concept, but we aren't really in tune with the experience of the song if we're only approaching it intellectually. The song exists in its rhythms and musical themes as much as in its lyrics. If we only concentrate on the lyrics and structure, then we miss half of it or more.

I would love for you guys to engage the concepts of free will and determinism further. It could be argued that free will is illusory because you cannot consciously choose against your deepest, preconditioned, subconscious inclinations. What you respond to with elation is not always something you can consciously control. When you layer these discussions of the will with the concept of time and the predictions of physics, you may see the traditional idea of free will crumble.

Their Magnum Opus. Their Masterwork. The timeline of Tool is separated in my mind as Before Lateralus and After Lateralus. Every song written before was lacking a connected "soul"; while, after it, all of their songs have felt much more connected to an entire body of work. That doesn't degrade or devalue the work Pre but maybe those exist in a Pre-Enlightenment dusky gloaming vs the broad daylight of Post awakening of Lateralus and beyond.

There's a ton here that could be touched on. The band is really interested in the occult. As a result, I looked into some of these things and Black, White, Red, and Yellow play into certain themes in tarot cards. Black on its own is mystery, unknown, dark. White by itself is innocence and purity. Together they symbolize the femanine receptive principle(black) and the masculine active principle(white) pillars of the Tree of Life. Red by itself is action, passion, inspiration, energy, strong will and masculinity. Yellow by itself is the superconscious and the expression of the will. So it could be you start with the unknown mystery, are born innocent and pure, then we are creatures of passion and primal instincts, then we regulate those things with our will. And once we get to that point, we need to reflect back along each part to understand their value to see the original mystery from a different perspective. 'As Below So Above' is a common thing from religion/occultism. It is used to say that the supernatural realms share certain traits with the mundane world. How things are changed in one change the other. In this case, they might be saying we don't know what level we are on, and even the level above us likely has 'an above' and that as well. Into infinity.
@WookieWarriorz

black then white are all i see is a reference to when you're developing in the womb you develop black and white vision first, you know 'in my infancy', red and yellow then came to be talks about the first colours you see when being born, 'red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, lets me see, but 'there's so much more that beckons' him to look past his mortal reality to something more divine, something with infinite possibilities. Art, the song is about perusing the infinite possibilities of artistic expression and always trying to push the envelop and swing on the spiral, the spiral of course being the golden ratio, something that manifests itself in all areas of the universe and can be seen as something divine and beyond humans, so he wants to create art beyond human comprehension by using the divine spiral.

The first verse is also literal. At birth humans are colour blind (black and white). Red is the first colour we learn to see and we can see the entire spectrum of colours by 5 months of age. Of course your interpretation is applicable, Tool didn't write this verse as purely a biology lesson but the metaphor is drawn from actual science.

Clues: try to see the separation form body and mind not as a something bad but as a goal, so the body can be the envelope limited by the senses . Following this idea, if you go over your body, "overthinking" you will be able the bend the reality, to bend the spoon in the matrix because there is no spoon, because what you see black and white as human applies only in our society based on a tiny planet ruled by tiny humans, but cosmos is "infinite" so what about the outside? What about all these creature we have not evolve to sense yet... what about the light spectrum we cannot see? What about the lie of religion? What about spiritual world? What about God? What about love? Think about it can make you travel inside your mind, but about if you overthink about it?

Interesting conversation but what was your take on Poles and Czechoslovakians again, Mr. Camera Guy? Her point was that they’re not optimizing their group interest due to individual choices affecting the whole; you counter her with “we’re all African?” LOL what does that mean? Btw Disposition, Reflection and Triad have to be experienced together. No way around that love.

So, Poles or Czechs not optimizint their interest, doesn't have to mean that humans as a whole aren't optimizing theirs. Strategies of subgroups could seem suboptimal, but they can make sens in the bigger picture. I hope that explains better what I wanted to say.

@@initum1599 We know there are group strategies, and it’s interesting how uniquely suited they seem to be for their particular groups environment. What works for one doesn’t have to be for another, or in this case one vs everything else. True enough, but what’s the out of Africa idea have to do with any one particular groups strategy? I just can’t make heads or tails out of it.

Ok. When you look in the span of hundreds of years, you can distinguish Czechs and Poles as groups. If you were to take step back and look on this in tens of thousands years span, it would be harder to consider them as separate groups, given they are same species, coming from same predecessors at some point, hence the use of "Africa" as it's a likely origin location.

@@initum1599 No I understand the Out of Africa theory. Perhaps it got lost in conversation, or it’s just me because it seemed like a non-sequitur in that moment of the discussion.

I'll have to listen to the discussion around that moment again. It's totally possible what I said was totally out of context, it wasn't a well prepared point, just adhoc thing. Thanks for pointing this out

Most of the examples of nature fitting to Fibonacci and the spiral based on it, etc. are not exact, but approximations. People over-exaggerate this.

Basically these tool fans are going to freak out about numbers and how music is the answer to all answers but it isn't. All mathematics work within a closed system, so all mystical mathematics eventually reach into a plane that come back to reality. The outer is so out of bounds that it is irrelevant.
