In today's video, I use the Canon EOS R7 and their RF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM lens to make photos of songbirds from my back porch blind. I was attempting to photograph hummingbirds but that didn't work out this time. I will try again.

Lovely pics as always Phil! Thanks for sharing. Of course I was really hoping to see some Hummingbirds. Or at least a Tufted Titmouse because then it would be a Tufted Phil taking picture of Tufted Titmouse 😆

I like that you name your "regulars"...Rodney...We name the regular visitors to our yard too. We named this year's fawn "Pippin", and I am looking forward to when Momma Deer starts to bring it around to our yard on her walks. My camera is ready!

You made some great shots once again Phil! Some will say it's "only" a Wren or Chickadee but I say all birds are beautiful. I love that you can use the 70-200 in your setup. Cheers.

The porch blind!!!! You always get the best photos from your yard. 😂 Thanks for sharing these cute little photos. I really liked the color of the male house finch. Those reds or is it orange?

Great images. The last lens I bought before switching to mirrorless was the EF 70-200 f2.8 iii. It adapts well and even though the RF version is lighter and has a shorter MFD, it will be awhile before I replace that lens. It isn’t often I am close enough to use that lens for birds. Rodney is cute. Your backyard blind really gets you nice results.

Great stuff Phil. I did a lot of complaining on the soft focus issues with my R7 with the 100-500, but in this past week I have been playing around with the focus stacking doing macro and even free hand has given me some very cool pics. Having lots of fun with flowers and insects .I will stick with this system until I have a chance at getting the R7ll and some new big lens besides the 100-500. Happy shooting

Sure enjoying your videos… I wonder how many of your viewers know who Uncle Grumpy is! I live very close to him on Vancouver Island. I’m constantly amazed at how many species of birds are similar from here to there…small world!

I would think you would use the R6 mark 2 and the 100-500 or 200-800 for the hummingbirds-- that 40fps would really help-- I have shot over the years some Anna's hummingbirds out my family room window but sadly not this year..
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 8 дней назад
Thank you! 40fps requires electronic shutter. That would lead to rolling shutter distortion when shooting hummingbirds on the R6 Mark II. I picked the 70-200 for its wide aperture which allowed very fast shutter speeds. Now I just need the hummingbirds to show up! 🤣

Different times of the year clearly demand different care for flowering plants. I can't be that bothered in the Heat of Summer. But I still plant things regardless. As the Fall approaches, the plants tend to Bloom much better. So that will tend to be more attractive to the Hummingbirds. Bees and butterflies really don't seem to care either way. Several of my Neighbors have hummingbird feeders but I have ZERO. But the occasionally Hummer will still come by. So I would love it all Brands perfected the Auto Capture feature introduced in the Nikon Z8/9 series. Because the Hummingbirds are acutely aware of their surroundings. And I just won't wait all day for them to come.

this has been a strange summer for humming birds ! I usually have regular ones here but not this year don't know where or what happened to them this year.
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 6 дней назад
We don’t usually have remarkably more than this year. Usually just one or two all summer and a few more around September. Hopefully I can get my annual hummingbird photo before they leave for the winter.

Nice pics! the RF 70-200 seems like a good lens, but maybe not long enough for me... Question: what is the distance between the camera and the perches?
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 8 дней назад
Thank you! 10 feet. It is a workable bird lens at distance on a high resolution apsc camera like the R7. I also use this combination in the very dark bird aviaries at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. For virtually everything else, I need more focal length.
