Video Description
Hat Yai is the largest town in Songkhla province with lots of commerce and shopping, but little remains of the town's past. Songkhla, the provincial capital, is very different. There isn't as much commerce, but there are many government and education facilities. In addition, there is a genuine old town area in which many of the buildings have been restored to their former glory. Hat Yai has nothing like this and a trip to Songkhla old town makes for a very pleasant change. There has been a long running campaign by some local residents for Songkhla old town to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Songkhla also has a lot of history going back to the time before Thailand was the nation state as we know it now. It never had the same power as Ayuthaya, but at one stage it was a very important place, as was Nakhon Sri Thammarat just to the north.
In this video I'll show you around the old town as well as giving a basic overview of the history.
Note: This video was previously uploaded to my language channel on 10 February 2022. In order to separate different kinds of content I am moving my non-language videos to this channel.
How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
www.agoda.com/...
Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other RU-vid channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

I agree! It's a very pleasant place and it's so good to see that the people of Songkhla are doing their best to save the town's heritage. Many of those old buildings are beautiful and they deserve to be preserved.

Hi. Was there just a few weeks back. Hat Yai has more shopping and food options, but Songkhla is definately more chilled. Love what they have done along the beach front too. Unfortunately, its linear nature can make traffic a nightmare during rush hour along the main road going through the city, especially between Taksin Uni and the Rajabhat.

Yes, the two towns are closely linked, but very different in character. I know someone who used to live just off that piece of road you mentioned and she told me that pedestrians got run over frequently. The driving standards in Thailand are appalling and traffic is bad in a lot of places, including Hat Yai. I like to visit Songkhla, but living in Hat Yai is more convenient for many things.

Hat Yai and Songkhla are very closely connected, but very different in character. If you're in Hat Yai for a while and get bored, a day trip to Songkhla old town is a really nice change. I recommend it!

I went to Songkla old town from Hat Yai for a day, in September 2023, I really enjoyed walking and exploring the place. Pity I didn't go to the beach and to the village / island on the lake !

Excellent my expat Friend . Came by Songkhla in the early 1980’s And if I remembered correctly . I managed to hire a Golf set and had a go just for the hell of it. Wondering if the Golf course is still there. Btw Thailand never ceases to amaze me...hoping to get into hadyai/Songkhla Soon.once again thanks for the memories cheers

Thank you! That's a coincidence because I've just been talking about golf courses with my son, who is keen on golf. As far as I know, both of the golf courses in Songkhla that I knew about have now closed. The Star golf course closed and there used to be a little par 3 course behind the Samila Beach hotel, which has also closed. It's a shame about the latter as it would have been perfect for my son, who is only 8. There are four, or so, courses in the Hat Yai area.

The (1980s) 9 hole golf course behind the Samila Hotel, over the road from the coast, has been changed into a walking park. Well done but there should have at least been a putting course included which would have brought youngsters and families together. A new golf course has been built recently along the side of the Navy Base runway. It's pretty good but for keenies, the Army base course in Hatyai is a great alternative. The old town, working on UNESCO World Heritage status is a joy to experience. Many restaurants that look out on the lake and coffee shops. Art is also a big thing in this area, with several very good galleries to view. If in Southern Thailand, Songkhla is not to be missed, especially if you want to get away from tourists and chill out while walking, swimming, golfing... yes, the traffic can be tiring at busy times of the day.

Nakhon Si Thammarat is also known as Bandar Sri Dermaraja in Malay (Bandar Sri Bengawan is the Capital of Brunei btw another Malay Sultanate) - Bandar is a persian word it means Fort or Town in malay. Sri is a title often used in Malay. Derma Raja probably means the Dharma of the king.

Historically, it was known as Ligor or Nagara Sri Dharmajara and it had many tributaries, including Pattani. The city fell under Thai suzerainty going right back to the 13th century (Sukothai period), including its tributaries. Prior to this, it was thought to be under Burmese suzerainty and was also part of the Srivijayan empire. Ceylon was also involved, and according to David Wyatt's book, King Narapati obtained permission from Ceylon to build the city. Thanks again for your information. I have some books on the history of Thailand, but they don't have the Malay perspective that you provide. The history of the peninsula region is very complex. Interesting, but complex! You have obviously studied the subject and have good knowledge.

Am staying in Prauchap Kiri Khan town at the moment, some similarities to the above in that there is an old Thai feeling ,mostly low(ish)rise buildings, not much night life which is fine by me and liveable traffic situation.Looking at apts to rent it seems at least 30-35% cheaper than PKK-more or less a similar type of place that I am renting at 9000 baht pcm was around 5.5k in Songkhla with the same utility bills on top.Would you say that this is typical?Food I am guessing would be more or less equal in price. PS is there a beach nr the old town?

Every time I make plans to visit Prachuap something happens! Sounds good, though. I'm more familiar with rental prices in Hat Yai than Songkhla, but I would say that is fairly typical. Wherever there are lots of farangs, rental prices rise. The Hua Hin area is far more popular with expats than Songkhla, thus the higher prices. Samila beach on the Gulf coast isn't far from Songkhla old town. The area is like a little peninsula with the old town on the west coast and Samila beach on the east coast. You could walk or it's just a few minutes by motorbike. Songkhla old town is on the rim of Songkhla lake - the largest natural lake in Thailand - so there's water, but not really beaches. I'm not into nightlife either, but there is a nightlife area in Songkhla. Some years ago there were quite a few western expats working in Songkhla's oil industry keeping the nightlife industry busy, but I think a lot have gone now.

Hi, Sir. Is end of August and beginning of September a great time to visit Hatyai and Songkhla? I am under the impression that the rainiest time of the year is between October and February. Hopefully I'm not wrong.

Hi! The rainy season is October, November, and December. All of Hat Yai's major floods have occurred in the month of November. January and February are normally very hot and dry. August and September should be fine, but heavy rain can occur at any time! It's actually a good time - after the intense heat of the hot season and before the really wet part of the year. Have fun!
