Leona adored my musician friends.
Their individual and collective enthusiasm, passion, perseverance, ingenuity, and humor resonated deeply with her. As a Parisian fashion designer she understood the ups, downs, and uncertainty of the artistic life.
To honor my late wife’s extraordinary life - which also exuded the above referenced attributes, I asked my colleagues who knew Leona to record a track for her.
With a yen for rhythm & blues, soul, and disco, Leona was also a jazz “elitest” - she played upright bass in high school while spinning records as a DJ.
The Isley Brothers’ “Who’s That Lady” was her on-air theme song. I only requested that said recording be positive (in a major key) and have a little “lift” in it - which was Miles Davis’ term for “funky!" And make it the best song you’ve ever written / recorded!
How hard can that be?
“She’s clever!” said Leona of Cyndie Hasty.
For Tom…
Leona Is the Wind
Written, recorded, and performed by Cyndie Hasty
Leona is the wind that whispers in
Past a street light on the Seine
A rooftop in the rain
Gentle as she goes, she settles in
By the light that never dims
The light that never dims…
I am always by your side
You say
I am always by your side
My Love…
Beautiful the hands
That touch my hands
As we leave a dark café
We stop along the way
You lost your scarf
The one you bought
Was it just a day ago?
It’s hanging on my door
I am always by your side
You say
I am always by your side
My Love…
Leona is the wind that whispers in
Past a street light on the Seine
A rooftop in the rain
Gentle as she goes, she settles in
By the light that never dims
The light that never dims…
