The thing about the Misfits that, to me, is their single biggest secret weapon is melody. The fact that LAST CARESS has some of the most nihilistic lyrics ever put to paper but has a tune that my mother learned to hum because she heard it blasting out of my room as a teen so often speaks to the power of their songwriting.

I'm so ancient I saw them in Chicago 1982 or maybe 1983. Unlistenable! Who could have imagined they'd become my favorite punk band?

Such a nasty lyrical song with a catchy poppy albeit distorted as f*ck guitars makes this song work. The things I love about the Misfits is how sing-a-long the songs are. Not just the chorus but the whole song, every lyric you can yell out. Amazing !!!

Especially with those early singles. The more hardcore it got, the more basic the melodies became. A function of the genre I suppose.
