Thanks for your hard work! I have been following development for years at this point. It's actually quite an event for me to just sit down lean forward, sip my coffee, and just listen to your thoughts on game design, the struggles, and it warmed my heart when your son came in this time asking for a cookie. It's probably not possible but as a pre-intermediate level java developer I would love to see the source code, but I understand that you can't just hand it over to strangers. I can imagine that after 9 years you got bored of all this already, and the game has to be released at some point which can amount to a certain amount of pressure; but I would love to have created some sort of legacy like you have (apart from having a family) with a vision and scope like this. I find this immensely inspiring and I'm always at awe at seeing you navigate the culmination of your effort which is this great game for a small set of nerds like us.
Thanks a lot! The code actually comes with the game. It's in a folder called info in the installation directory. I plan on properly putting it on github when I find the time.
Been playing the new v65 beta today and it is much more balanced. Appreciate all the tweaks that have been put in lately, especially the furniture consumption rate!
I played your release today, Jake. This game blew me away. im 100 hrs in , started only a few weeks ago . . thank you for your hard work. . .im absolutely, hopelessly addicted
I have read your "Road to 1.0" steam article and I have a suggestion. Please create a physical king person, who the player is. It's simply about immersion. The throne is all empty and the king is like an abstract entity. If I can see who the king is then it also makes sense to protect the throne room and the king. On top of that, the king obviously should have survival requirements like food and clothes and can be murdererd so guards would also have to be present around him, then the game would feel complete to me. Again, I know that the king would need it's own requirements for which you would have to program it's own AI, but as you will be working on nobles for 1.0, how different is a king from a noble? Doesn't it also add another layer of gameplay and logistics where you need to take care of the king and keep him protected?
I've discovered the game recently, and I have to say, I had a hard time understanding why it was so positively rated on Steam. I was an idiot. I had launched the demo the first time, didn't try to understand anything, and uninstalled it. I reinstalled it a few days ago, did the tutorial, made a little effort to explore the rest of the game by myself, and I must say, I'm having a blast so far. As a fan of Sim City, Civilization and other strategy/simulation game series, I haven't had fun on a video game of this type for a long time. I bought the game and will follow your devlog religiously from now on. Keep up the good work! Your vision is great, and you are making a lot of hardcore players of sim games happy.
Your support for this game has been amazing. Early access done right. Ive been looking into modding but I cant seem to find any documentation other than simple table based editing. Is there an API or some data structure we can access on update. If you could make a video with some more advanced modding features being implemented that would go a long way. Thank you for your incredible effort. Its relieving to see you finely pleased with the work you've done.
I will. For now it's easy to do .txt file changes to add or remove or change stuff. For more advanced things, I have a code overwrite feature that is still a bit immature. I'll make sure this gets documented when it's more or less solid.
Dude, this game, and your journey developing it are an inspiration. It feels like the point where game design really becomes art. And it's the kind of thing that the game industry could use a lot more of. And any project, regardless of how passionate you may be for it (and you clearly are) can reach a point that you become tired or burnt out on it. To expect otherwise, is to expect something non-human. I feel like sabbaticals, at least for small or solo development teams should become a norm. Regardless, thank you for all the hard work and dedication to this game. It is an incredible piece of artwork, and a testament to your dedication and legacy.
Looks great, I love the update. I hope that in the future there will be an update or a mod to allow having multiple cities. Something like Anno 1800, where we have to manage multiple places, gather new resources from different locations and then manage logistics
Even though I get bored after a few hundred pop and quit until a new patch every other time I play this game there's just something about the development and the itch it scratches in my brain that makes me want to keep following, even when I feel like I've had enough. Definitely one of the most interesting projects out there and can't wait to see how it progresses :)
The aim now is to increase fun for longer. It's the same drug with a new improved formula. So I'd be interested to know if this version pulls you in a bit more.
Great work. This game was already good, and now you focus on refining and finishing the game. You and your project will definitely go down in the history of indie developers.
I wanna be like you when I grow up. Kidding aside, you have made one of, if not the best city builder I have played. I have only tried the demo to about 350 or so population and it looks like I haven’t even scratched the surface of what is possible.
I was thinking today that I need to check Songs of Syx for updates as it's been a long time since the previous one, and suddenly after a few hours of randomly watching RU-vid, it came to my recommendations. It's so weird as if RU-vid can now read my mind, I guess that's how the feature will be like xD. Thanks for continuing to develop the game!
This game deserve to be more famous, this is exactly what i was looking for and never saw it anywhere until now, i hope from the bottom of my heart that you will take care longer of this game, because you made me a bit afraid when you said you will rely on modders after 1.0 to improve the game, we feel it that you are tired of all those years working on it and it's understandable, but you gave birth to the game that a lot of people like me were looking for and we want it to grow, that's the exact reason why i bought it despite not having much money because i wanted to reward your work and make you want to continue to take care of it, the potential is really massive and it could be a waste to be satisfied with only 1.0, i hope you did not misunderstood me because of my bad english, but we don't want to enslave you, i just want to show you how we are dedicated to your work as much as you are for us, your game is a banger mate
Steam randomly threw this game my way, wish it did a lot sooner. This is right up my alley, and its great to see a dev as dedicated as you are. This is definitely one of those one-in-a-million gems.
randomly steam recommended me this game. I barely gave it a glance, but thank god I did....seriously one of my favorite games ever. I wish you all the success that you deserve from this, it shows that you worked your ass off and it's going to pay off in the end
I loved the game when it was earlier in development then I stopped playing for a year or so and when I came back everything had gotten so much more complicated that I just didn't have the motivation to learn it all over again and learn all the new systems. Hopefully one day I will get back into playing. I love that you do these videos about updates and changes and you have built a great game. It just got a bit overwhelming for me to come back into after being away for so long. I really did love playing the game in the past though so I'm hopeful that one day I can devote the energy to learning it again.
I am so glad sseth made a review of your project. I hope the influx of sales helps a ton. great game & I am surprised with what your single vision for your game has produced. youve already given me more than my moneys worth in fun!
i only have 120 hours in the game but i am loving my time i get to play i only get maybe an hour a day to play, so you know thank you for the fun game that i can tell you have poured your time into
Just a thought. Two of my favorite games (Dwarf Fortress and Caves of Qud) have a partnership with Kitfox Games. I think your game would fit really well there and you will get more people to love your fantastic game 🙂
Thank you, this is easily one of my favorite games of all time and having the ability war other nations/factions is awesome. Will we ever have the chance to maintain cities that have been conquered?
You just keep outdoing yourself. Thank you for all your hard work. I've already enjoyed more than 250 hours of your game. You've created something amazing and just keep on doubling down. Your dedication to your project is an inspiration.
I have been following the development for quiet a while now and I always come back after major changes. This is great work, might I suggest asking someone like SsethTzeentach to review the game once it's at 1.0. I found many obscure and amazing titles like starsector & highfleet, I think this game is right up his alley too!
One thing I might change about the markets/food stalls would be a change to how their radius' work, smaller radii are a good idea, but they break when you wanna make a marketplace, perhaps having multiple nearby each other could instead have their radii also stack? that way a larger marketplace will attract more people, like they often do in real life!
That's a good observation, and a good proposal. Unfortunately I can't have a dynamic radius like that for a service. I will increase the base one though if it's really needed.
I love how much effort and love you put into this game. I feel like you always are letting us know what is going on. Thank you for all your hard work and for communicating with us. It is a pleasure to always check in and see what is happening.
At first i was sceptical about this game. I've downloaded a pirated copy of it to see if it's any good. After playing for a few days i came to a conclusion - i'm 100% buying this game.
Thank you so much. This game is a gem and I always have a blast playing it. Also, I’m getting the feeling that there’s more coverage about it, so that’s good.
You should have a lot of pride for your work. This game is very impressive. I cannot imagine the amount of optimization and knowledge it takes to get all this running at scale. As a college student who studies comp sci you motivate the heck out of me man.
I saw a review saying how hilarious it is to have such an amazing gave getting patch updates from a dude with a truly horrific mic and by god, was that true.
Thanks for the update. I haven't played SoS in over 18months now, but I've put it on my list to pick-it-up again as soon as some gaming time is available. I'm eager to try all of these new developments. It feels like I paid once for two games now :c)
Your statement about wanting the game to be rewarding for people who can reach 10k pops it's inspiring. Im not a good sim player, but I like a game to be challenging, and reward the most capable players.
I have never played this, and I may never play this, only because it looks too good, and that I would enjoy it too much when other things demand my time. I am commenting to say that I have every confidence that this game, if you continue on your current trajectory, will be a huge success. You are only just beginning the upswing, and if I could, I would buy shares in it. All the very best.
At the word "polishing" i was extremely proud to have bought this game a week ago! Adding stuff is useless if what you have already doesn't work as intented. Current gaming development scene will rewards good software greatly!!! (Factorio should always be the LANDMARK for game developing).
When you hit 1.0, please ask steam to put you at the front page or make some kind of commercial, your game is so fucking good it needs so much more recognition, most people will love this game, they just don´t know about it yet. I only got it because im into really neiche indie games, i always find them. If you get the word out about this game you´ll strike gold. I have only so many friends to recommend it to.
If you could somehow make it visually easier to understand, it would have a much wider potential audience. It is amazing what you have achieved in terms of scale of the simulation.
Let's hope we can diagonalize canals, too. 😉 Since you were so kind as to let us square-nize roads. Also, you said we'll be able to make city maps larger via modding. Will there be some kind of tutorial to make a small mod for map sizes or will I have to muddle through? (Never modded myself.) Also, what's the radius for the food stall for?
It's very simple to mod that. You just need to setup a mod, which is probably easiest to download one and use it as a shell. To increase map size, you need to change a number in a .txt file. Not sure about the radius. I think 100 tiles.
hey, man. you are great! just idea from me: the most casual aspect that EACH hardcore strategy game has -- statistics. Very precise and efficient statistics about entity that you as player controlling: how many resources, manpower, diplomatic aspects, etc you have. But why? The real problem in real management is to get correct and systematic feedback to generate that statistics. This problem is a deep root in different political questions, for example: when is it better to be more or less centralized, when market is working better, what are properties of efficient organization and why. Often rulers fail with statistics and live in parallel world, where they're making some awful in real world decisions. So, why the hell player should have cool statistics? My idea is: - smaller organization you have better "natural" statistics you have. you can literally know each person in you group and talk to him/her; - bigger org you have more challenges you have to understand what and how your org is doing. to resolve that you need administration (buildings, workers, etc); Is it possible to add degradation of player's statistics in Songs of Syx especially on a big scale? Add mechanisms for player to face that issue? Same for AI? Thanks!
It is although there are some minor issues that need to be fixed. I personally don't see an enjoyment of playing a strategy game with a controller, but apparently people do nowadays, so for 1.0 I'll make sure everything is set up.
@@songsofsyxofficial9516 Controller would be a nightmare, but the touchpads/screen are where it is at. Honestly, the game is a treat right now on Deck; I was left with the impression that you intentionally worked in the UI scaling, as it is so well done.
