for context: madison is her little sister! and the reason she called the song ICU relates directly to her overdose experience. when she woke up in the ICU, she was legally blind and couldn't even recognize her little sister's voice.

Melon Cake is about how controlling her old team was, especially with her eaiting. They only let her have a watermelon cake for her birthday, not a real cake. 15 minutes is about her ex-fiance. When they broke up, he went to Malibú and called paparazzi so they'd take photos of him praying and crying. It was WEIRD hahah. Butterfly is about her dad. He was an addict, he left her and her mother when she was a child, and they had a distant and complicated relationship. He died in June, around Father's Day. She has written a few songs about her dad. I would recommend listening to them in order: For the Love of a Daughter, Shouldn't Come Back, Father and then Butterfly. Be prepared to cry.

California Sober for her means mainly she smokes weed and drinks in moderation but is done with the hard drugs. 100% abstinence makes her eventually snap and go to bigger things. It’s basically harm mitigation.

If you think DWTD the song was cinematic, watch the mv. She literally re-enacts the relapse, and the night of the OD down to the hair, makeup, and outfit she wore that night.

California Sober is a term she's using to describe drinking alcohol in moderation and smoking weed. So she's not fully sober. She believes this is the route for her. It's debatable and personally I'm very concerned with the way she's talked about it. But as a Lovatic, I'm really, really hoping she's right and she'll be okay.

Little background information about ICU (Madison's Lullaby): Madison is her little sister (she's 19, played Juanita Solis, Eva Longoria's daughter on Desperate Housewives, in case anyone remembers that :D). The song is about wanting to be there for her, be a better role model and hoping Madison is gonna know about her worth and that she can always count on Demi. But the song is much more literal than that. When Demi overdosed, she ended up in the ICU (hints the song title) and Madison was at her bedside, holding her hand and letting her know that she's there and that she loves her. Demi looked at her and physically could not see her little sister. She said "Who are you?" because she couldn't see Madison. She was temporarily blind. To this day, Demi has blind spots in her vision and she's not allowed to drive anymore, but regained most of her vision and is now able to see her sister again (ICU = "I See You"). Also, the first time Demi got sober back when she was 18, she did it because her parents said she wouldn't be allowed to see her little sister anymore if she kept on doing drugs and drinking. Fast forward a few years, Demi relapsed and was now LITERALLY not able to see her sister because of the drugs she was using. In the documentary Demi described it with "It's really ironic and in a weird way poetic that it ended up happening like that and me not actually seeing her [...] I think that God has a twisted sense of humor sometimes."
