The Rain Song live is such a special performance. Leaves me speechless every time. I just can’t imagine a couple 20 year olds writing something so complex and perform it at this level today. The members of Led Zeppelin were so special. 1 in 8 billion and counting!

The outro to the Rain Song may be the most beautiful, most transcendent piece of guitar notes in succession, I've ever heard whether in live performance or even in studio. Page was just that special and the dynamic of Led Zeppelin live can't be topped.

These videos were taken from the film: "The Song Remains The Same." It came out in 1976, and it is a full length film based on three shows Zeppelin did in Madison Square Garden in NYC in 1973. It includes not only live performances of songs, but "fantasy sequences" of each of the band members (and manager Peter Grant) depicting some aspect of the personalities of each person. Each band member has their own fantasy sequence. Jimmy's fantasy is depicted in "Dazed and Confused" (perhaps the greatest guitar performance set to film), John Paul Jones' sequence is set to No Quarter (brilliant), Robert's sequence is set to Rain Song, and Bonzo's is set to Moby Dick (a MUST WATCH drum solo). You should watch this entire film....this was the only video most fans had of Led Zeppelin prior to the release of the LZ DVD in 2003.

As a guitar player who grew up on Zep and learned many of their songs, there really is no one like Page. He plays in such a diverse array of styles and influences, and he writes the same, changing genres, instrumentation, tunings, etc. To me, he is the best guitarist/composer that's ever come down the pike. Few like him. If you want to see a full display of his genius, as well as the bands skills to improvise, check out Dazed and Confused from this song track: The Song Remains the Same. Guaranteed to blow your mind.

The casual listener may find it difficult to count this song For the intermediate musician it can still be challenging The key is understanding where the on and off beats fall A lot of people don’t realize Jimmy page does and did know how to read and write music Having master musicians in Jones and Bonham enabled them to play complex rhythms, time, signatures and constant rhythm, shifts, speeding or slowing tempos, and being able to synchronize and improvise Although this is in common or 4/4 time, the beat is pushed Watch him play this live and you will see the majority of the chord strums are up strokes on the guitar because that’s the and or the offbeat. The song opens on and of 4 The opening backwards strummed chord (4) And (opening backwards strummed chord) 1 (rest) 2 and 3 and 4(rest) And (strum starting next bar 1/2 step early or pushed). So count the opening chord as And (between four and one), and count from there, and it will all fall into place Later in the song, when the drums come in, listen for the high hat, Bonham always pedals the hi hat on two and four, and the symbol crashes are on one during the rock hard all the way to the finale. It makes it feel as if he is hitting the symbol crashes, but half step late This adds to the genius I'm setting this mood to The Rain Song So much of their music is written this way Page is considered a swing guitarist when they say, can you swing that’s basically can you play on the offbeat can you emphasize The offbeat

And if that song isn't beautiful enough...let me tell you more. TheRS is in an open guitar tuning that Jimi just came up with. There aren't any other songs in that tuning(correct me if you know one). What that means is a guitar player(me) is not going to be familiar with the chords or where notes are already. So you have to learn made up chords, in this made up tuning, for the only song in this tuning, to play the song. TBS, after all that, Jimmy wrote it with no chord or note reference points he already knew as a starting point. Yeah, he's pretty good.😮

I see "The Rain Song" as much like Bob Seagers song "Night Moves". They both are the story of life. Starting in the spring of your life is when you are young. You grow into later years and that is the summer. As you get older and closer to death that is your winter. In "The Rain Song", the line " I've felt the coldness of my winter. I never thought it would come" is him recognizing that he is dying. The line "There is a torch we all must hold" is the torch of death.

You love dragons. Robert Plant loved J.R.R. Tolkien. He wrote The Lord of the Rings. Much of Zeppelins lyrics are littered with Tolkein'esk references. The song Ramble On references Mordor and Golum, they have a song Called "Misty Mountain Hop", and there are others. I love their song called "The Battle of Evermore" which is Plants version of the daily battle between day and night. Anyway, enjoy your trip down the Led Zeppelin rabbit hole. I don’t have page in my top 5-the competition is SO stiff-but one thing he was the best at was live improv in abstraction. SRV could improv all over the fretboard like nobody, but Page is able to shift from arpeggio to chord play and back again, and take the solo places where the song just is not lol. He’s doing things in time and totally in the pocket, but he’s backing in and out of riffs then just walking all over them spasmodically. You don’t get it as much in the studio but live he’s fire. He does things no other guitarist does.

I'm in the minority when it comes to the performances for these songs; especially The Rain Song. Robert's "fantasy sequence" is a little cheesy and trite and is definitely a product of its day that didn't age as well and distracts/detracts from the otherworldly beauty of this song, imo. If you can, please listen to the album versions of both for a different experience.

Agreed. I prefer studio versions in general, or at least experiencing them first, but with Zeppelin I feel this is a must. They could get pretty self-indulgent onstage, stretching their songs out to twenty minutes or more. I know a lot of people are into that but I'm not one of them. Give me the studio versions!
@henriettaskolnick4445

@@chrisboerger465 Don't get me wrong - I love the live performances! I've watched the concerts (I absolutely *ADORE* D&C from MSG) and listen to a lot of boots but this is the only section I find a bit cringe. What I often tell people in regard to Zep, is you listen to the studio to get all the nuances, delicacies, intricacies, craftsmanship, and perfect production. You listen to the live to get the exploration, improvisation, and the perfectly imperfect explosion of greatness. There's nothing wrong with either, but for a newbie, for example, I always recommend studio first to learn the song before you watch them completely change it when playing live.

Actually in some ways its more fitting for the song than yet more footage of them on stage. Seeing as Plant isn't singing for most of the song, while the music... though beautiful... is sedate so there wouldn't be much of visual interest going on there if it was purely stage footage.
