What a totally superb commentary on the life of a songwriter. Because it follows Beth’s mind, and she thinks this way, it moves effortlessly between the practical and spiritual dimensions of writing. She never loses touch with the mystery behind it all, or her gratitude for being able to tap into it. And yet she has real humility and the power to encourage others in this art. I admire her for believing that songwriting is one of the forms through which creative energy and beauty enter our world. The reference to her own illness and how it affected her work is deeply touching. I should say I thought the questions all brilliant as well and able to draw the best out of Beth’s well of creative wisdom. Thank you Beth; thank you M.
She has towering ability and mighty achievements, yet comes across as such a modest, down-to-earth, practical and eminently likeable person. Articulate, empathetic and intelligent.
I love when someone can talk at such length about the hard-to-explains and grey areas behind song writing. I would love to have a long conversation with this woman!
At BNC in Nashville, at BNC in BC, and here again Beth gives the best guidance for songwriters. Beth inspires us with her songs, and with the license she gives us all to make music happen. Thanks to Beth!!
She is such an awesome songwriter writing from the heart that felt so much pain...Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg wrote their best songs working through the pain...
The development of fertile ground for successful song writing is so well portrayed by Beth. I believe you are in the flow even when you are not aware of it. It's in the background and your process is actually trying out different tonal combinations. It's kind of like unconscious practicing.
Notice the things pretty much every successful songwriter agrees on. By successful, I mean who writes songs you actually want to listen to. It's validating to know a lot of the habits I've sort of stumbled into are the same things Beth discusses here. Someone as well established as her vicariously confirming for you that you're on the right track - that's just exhilarating.
As more "humble" am I, just for some while, I can live "the flow".... but, is so difficult that some GREAT SONG comes entire, you got some bonus part and work hard to get a sense and don't make damages on what you got
