Check out these five songwriting tips from one of the worlds most famous songwriters...Max Martin.
Max Martin has been writing and producings number one hits for some of the biggest names in music for the last twenty years.
In this video I break down five of the techniques he uses and lay them out so you can use them too.
these are songwriting tricks used by alot of major artists in the music biz and my aim is to explain them in a way that makes it easy for independent songwriters to use, regardless of their style or genre.
These songwriting tools have been used by The beatles, Nirvana, katy Perry, Taylor Swift...and the list goes on.
I breakdown how Max Martin uses hooks, also known as riffs or melodic motifs, to grab the listeners attention.
From there I reveal the management tool he uses organize his hooks so the audience wants to hear them more and more.
Then I show a tip that kind of feels like it's a secret hit maker tool and not just for pop music. this tool has been used from Nirvana to The Beatles and every one in between!
Then I move onto ways Max keeps the audience's interest through out the whole song.
I break these songwriting tools down with examples that make it clear and more importantly, useable!

For people that are interested in Max Martins techniques, philosophy and his rise to fame, I highly recommend the book "the Song Machine" by John Seabrook. It's a must read for every songwriter / producer out there!

Is it about max martin specifically? Like his story?
@heartshinemusic
@heartshinemusic 3 года назад
@@davidstock5279 It's not his biography, but Max Martins story plays a big part of the book. Including his early days with Denniz Pop. But the book has a bigger scope than only Max Martin, still everything is related to him and modern popmusic. Dr. Luke, who was compromised in the world wide #MeToo movement also plays a role in the book. There's a lot to be learned from it.
@davidstock5279

@@heartshinemusic I just read the book it was really great- do you know of any other books that are similar?
@heartshinemusic
@heartshinemusic 3 года назад
@@davidstock5279 The book is one of its kind. I'd also like to read more of these kind of books. There's one book though, that overlaps a bit with it, but it's not only about music, but has a wider scope: "Hit Makers" by Derek Thompson. It talks about formulae behind music, movies and more. The hidden psychology of why we like what we like. You may find some useful information inside.

Motif is just something general. You start with a chord progression, after figureheads, after figures, after segments, after phrases. For a Pop song you just need 3 melodies. For example you can use the chorus as an intro. (Listen Criminal by Britney spears). Also you can use a prechorus as a bridge. (Listen Love me like you do by Ellie Goulding).

I must say that the part where you used cats had me xD Otherwise, very good thoughts on the whole Max Martin myth, he is legend! I think all of it makes sense. There's very much to be learned from the rythmic patterns in the songwriting process. Most of it is GO WITH THE FLOW, and let the song write itself if possible! I learn more and more that I need to finish what I started to be able to move on and really progress. Sadly not all songs we write can be "masterpieces". For anyone who haven't read the interview or seen the masterclass, I would advice you to do so in a near future. It's gold if used properly, which is the hard part! Nice video, we all need the knowledge! :D
@SongWritersChopShop
@SongWritersChopShop 4 года назад
Cheers Micheal, I'm glad you got some value from it. I totally agree when you say go with the flow. As much as Max's melodic math is talked about, he clearly makes the point that these tools are to be applied after the inspiration and creativity strike. He certainly is a master of his craft and the techniques he uses can be applied to any style or genre, even cats agree!

You should make videos on how to write a good melody :) I've noticed all this but I've never fully understood it and I've never really saw anyone explain it. Thank you!
@SongWritersChopShop
@SongWritersChopShop 3 года назад
A 'good' melody is kind of a subjective term. There is nothing you can do to make everybody like your melody. Some will some won't. I consider a good melody to be one that expresses the emotion of the song. If you want to give me a few examples of what you think are good melodies (and why?), I can include them as examples in future vids. I'm doing a whole series on making vocal melodies over the next few months. So I'll be basically breaking down every element of melody and how they work with lyrics. Cheers Dragon Design.
@TheNocturna001
@TheNocturna001 3 года назад
@@SongWritersChopShop you got me thinking about it. I actually don't enjoy as much the popular songs... so I don't know if I will be helpful about the channel.... Well, right now my melody is like Rihanna - Diamonds you have a beat and you sing to the beat but if we look at Zivert - Life, here it's like the voice of the singer itself is creating the melody and the beat is just an addition to it (or is it just me?) :) BTW I listen to some Japanese music as well and they have a different sound than western music, so maybe it will be interesting if you cover that too. I'm talking specifically about Wagakki Band. They create an interesting and somewhat strange fusion, in one moment the melody is okay and in the next you feel like they play every instrument that they have simultaneously. For example their song "Tengaku". I think the same technique applies for the song by The Birthday massacre - Blue. Of course this one is easier to imagine as two completely different songs, regarding the melody. By the way, I am not a movie fan but, I think M83 - Oblivion is a melody type that I like. I actually aim to create such types of melodies with the exception that I'd add some classical sound to it but I am way too far from it when it comes to skillset. The other melodies that I enjoy are from Ramin Djawadi, especially his work on the "Westworld" soundtracks, like his piece "Dr.Ford". I think that the part after 2:20 is magnificent. I wanted to ask something, when is it proper to add some singing to the melody in between the verses and chorus. Something like "Ariana Grande ft. The Weeknd - Love Me Harder", when she sings "Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Love me, love me, love me Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Harder, harder, harder". (I couldn't think of a better song, sorry :) ) Damn... this is the longest comment I've ever written :D
