Damn, is that a punishment or what? The only thing worse I can think of is if the game spit out the disk which landed back in the case which re-shrink wrapped itself and flew back to the store so you'd have to buy it all over again.
+Vladski I see what you did there xD combining something good with disney and making it a video game can't be good :D *sound of angry fanboys in the distance*
KaBlamBandicoot64 What a way to start a game here is some old man you talk to and then go through about 10 loading screens for no reason then talk to the old man again to do some more loading screens.
11:44 I guess Tails decided to suicide rather than to be subject of this shitty game. It's like: Sonic: Hey Tails, you wanna play Sonic '06? Tails: Uhhh...ooookay Sonic...I'll...be right back. *runs into the sea and kills himself*
That last life as tails with the bridge collapsing and their reactions was incredible. The sensitivity while controlling the characters looks way too high.
Elisha Hahn Maybe it's because I was lucky, or that I was a little kid, but I QUICKLY got used to the control in sonic 06. It also taught me to save my progress.
Mr. Rubix 64 Nah, Sonic 06 is still way worse than Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom is just mediocre, this is unfinished and borderline broken due to all the bugs.
ACACE10 oh shit dude... i haven't thought of that... XD. well if he's not going to do the new sonic games he might as well do the old ones like sonic R or sonic drift or sonic 3d blast. i mean the bad old ones.
Going back and watching this video again, I realised how much I love how James is pretty much an old grandpa when it comes to modern games. It's so delightful
I bought this game as a kid thinking it would be as good as Sonic Heroes. It was right after I finished watching Sonic X, and I was craving more Sonic action. When I finally played it, I slowly realized it wasn't going to be very good. I decided to trade the game back to gamestop.
"They should've just started you at Tails!" and then that cynical laugh and facial expression by James. Perfect. I love it. It's like Mike is the one who played the game, but James is the one saying "you're giving it too much credit" without saying a word.
I can't believe James played Sonic 06! My dream has come true!! Thank you, Mike! Now, If only AVGN did a full review of the game, My REAL dream would have come true.
It's funny they mention the game felt rushed at the end. Because the game was rushed to meet a Christmas deadline. If I'm remembering correctly as well, half of the team (or a large portion of it) was taken out of the project midway to focus on a Sonic title for the Wii (Sonic and the Secret Rings)
From what I know, this game is indeed unfinished. Sega pressured Sonic Team for a holiday release of this game, ergo all of the flaws and glitches were not seen to. There are even unused components as well. Can't really fault the development team for this. If given enough time, perhaps the gameplay would have been better (and probably the story as well).
I wonder how often James plays modern gaming consoles/games. While this is a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE game, a few of the points in which they got stuck or confused were pretty typical gaming conventions since the PS2-ish days, such as hub worlds to get into level stuff. Ah well, funny to see how bad the game is when one has no idea what they're doing.
MuikuliWander Not saying they were, just that I was curious as to how often James plays modern games, as some of the things (good design or not) were pretty typical design choices around the time of this release, so I didn't know many people who got stuck on such things.
Both the boys strike me as a bit old school when it comes to gaming. Myself, I still play stuff like Donkey Kong and Frogger. Now that's old school. Got me one of those 60 in 1 arcade cabinets. Fun fun fun! Thought I'd say hi seeing as you write so well. Very refreshing to see in the comments section. Have a good Christmas. Peace out bro.
Sonic 06 is one of the worst games of the last generation. The whole game is a frustrating process of trial and error, wouldn't call it a design choice but rather a design fiasco.
+VYSUS Most of the bugs and glitches in the original release were fixed in the platinum hits version. Its just a much better version of sonic 06 than the original release.
I like how James manages to go in with a fairly open mind. He KNOWS the game is shit. He must know, unless he lived under a rock or something. Yet he doesn't automatically point out all the really ni-tpicky bad things in the game while ignoring some good things. I.e. he immediately admits that at least the camera is good. He doesn't insult the game before having a reason to do so.
Guessing James and Mike don't know that this game never actually made it out of Beta. It's literally incomplete, Sonic Team came out and told the world they were rushed by SEGA, despite pleading for more time. You can really tell too. Entire areas untextured (like the HUB town, that's why it's so gray, it was supposed to have a lot more color), broken scripts get you killed constantly (falling through everything, etc), unfinished enemy AI, unfinished/unimplemented features (enemies and bosses don't behave as intended, instead standing around doing nothing for random periods), character animations either incomplete or missing, incomplete NPC models, a physics engine not fully utilized resulting in things like Shadow phasing through objects entirely in his levels, a bad story even by Sonic standards, the list goes on and on and on. Who knows if it would've been good had Sonic Team been given another year, but as it stands, SEGA rushed it out for Xmas 2006 and got this broken pile of glass shards. Oi, salva mia. It's both an interesting and unfortunate story. Maybe check that out, James/Mike, for more in-depth detail.
Mike, the music isn't bad, I actually thought some tracks were pretty damn good. Everything else about this game is an abomination against humanity, of course.
It drives me nuts that Mike said "bad music" at the end. The music in this game is FANTASTIC. It's the game's only real redeeming quality. I don't own it, but I listen to the soundtrack often. Three words: "Solaris Phase Two".
FourTheKids ...I don't quite agree with this. Yes, there are certain songs that I may like that you might not, but I certainly think there is OBJECTIVELY bad music (especially when it comes to video games.) And Sonic 06's soundtrack doesn't fall into this category. However, where I think there is some subjectivity here is weather or not you (or Mike, for that matter) likes/dislikes SONIC MUSIC in general. If you like Sonic music, there is no real way you can bash this game's soundtrack, as it is GOOD Sonic music. However, if you dislike Sonic music, then I totally believe that you might not like this soundtrack, and that's okay. I question your taste, but it's okay. Haha. In the end, I think Mike was just talking and not thinking. :P
Swaggless That's not true. Just because you like a type of music doesn't mean you like all of them. People judge the music by what it sounds like not what game series its from. I think this OST is nothing special. I find the music rather bland. Nothing remotely iconic or memorable as say the Genesis games or the early 3D Sonic games. It's not bad,but nothing to write home about. By your logic you should love Sonic Chronicles OST
I have "Sonic the Hedgehog's Ultimate Genesis Collection" on the XBOX 360. The game came out in 2004, and since it's Sega-oriented, there's a bunch of reviews of the people who work with Sega and Sonic Team, and several of the reviews are of people who were (at the time) chosen to develop and work on Sonic 06. It's funny because they say things like "When I found out I was chosen to work on the new Sonic the Hedgehog game, I was honored." and "We're going to reinvent Sonic and make him more appealing for modern audiences." (or something like that.)
I would agree, but he already addressed this in the previous James & Mike Monday stating that AVG is about older titles, and even though we are now starting next gen, it's still just not old enough of a title for AVGN. However, he did mention that he has TONS of requests for an AVGN episode on it, and maybe now that he has experienced how truly aweful this game his, maybe he'll reconsider. But don't get your hopes up.
So, I'm a youngun', and the more I watch Let's Plays from James and Mike and Two Best Friends Play, the more I realize that I grew up as Sonic was dying. My first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure, which I loved and played all the time. It was all downhill from there. It's so weird to know that a franchise I always loved to death was apparently in its death throes when I started.
***** To be fair I remember my first time playing this game I did awful. Mainly due to it's pretty terrible camera issues along with control issues and not to mention countless bugs.
Oh yeah, I definitely see the bugs and stuff. I'm surprised James didn't know about the homing attack until into Wave Ocean but I can't remember if he ever said he played the DC games.
+Rei I actually enjoyed Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, years back. I liked the Chao breeding sidequest thing. And even Sonic Heroes was okay. This game though... I've never played it, but it looks like a broken, unfinished version of Sonic Adventure 3.
Did Mike just say the game has bad...music...? The game where majority of Sonic fans hate, but can all agree on the music being good. Wow. I just can't. XD
This game shouldn't be named "Sonic the Hedgehog" but rather "Sonic: The Loading Bar 'Game' " or "Loading: The Loading Bar Screensaver" or "Sonic: The Butchering of a Legend".
Seriously. It's not often that when people say " this game loads too much!" or takes too long to load (Skyrim) that they are actually not exaggerating.
Hey kids, there's nothing more cool than playing a game with someone you like. But if someone tries to make you play my 2006 shitsterpeice, THAT'S NO GOOD!
The whole time I just wanted James to explode into an AVGN rage. "Sonic '06, LIKE PUKING ON A PILE OF SHIT" **falling through the ground as Tails** ASSSSSSSSS
It's nice to come here straight from the Sonic '06 Nerd videos (chronologically reversed watching) and see/hear some of the ideas originate _here,_ in this sit-down. Looking back, it's cool to see James' creative working process, a lot of gags in the AVGN video are generated in this casual playthrough.
You guys have no idea. You didn't even see snowboarding uphill, nonsensical and nearly impossible boss battles (IT'S NO USE!), standing sideways... Not to mention, three campaigns that just don't make sense. Shadow riding a motorcycle, Silver and his ridiculous psychic controls... This game was beyond rushed and I doubt it was ever play tested. Like you guys said, it had potential and it was hyped to no end, but bad decisions and unforeseen problems got in the way, resulting in this piece of garbage.
I still consider this game criminally overrated. Too many people simply call it "weak" and "a bad Sonic game." NO! IT IS SO MUCH WORSE THAN THAT IN EVERY FUCKING WAY!
As a fan of Modern Sonic, I agree this game is utter shiet. The only decent thing was the music, everything else is a train wreck in slow motion over the course of 40 hours.
"It'd be great to know if they gave me a bit more warning that I was going to switch to a different character" Sonic tells Tails to do a specific task, then the camera switches from Sonic to Tails, with Tails confirming his task. How isn't that sufficient warning about switching characters? And the intro should really only take about 5 minutes, including cutscenes and loading screens. Is it too much to repeat 5 minutes of gameplay, especially when you can skip all the cutscenes? All the game does is bring you back to immediately after you beat the previous level. But since there IS no previous level, the game starts you at the (short) intro.
i know this game is bad and it deserves all the shit it gets but clearly you guys weren't even trying to learn this game. you were just trying to bum rush hoping for the best. you kinda have to observe the stage and pay attention to the tutorials. they dont add those things for nothing. patience also helps
