RedHotSonic: "But seriously, If you're a fan of this Genesis port, then that's fine by me. I respect your decision." Sonic: *Proceeds to run near a spinning fan blades.* Me: *Has a cheeky smile on my face.* "Ba dum tss!"
There IS a game-breaking glitch in this Stealth port: After beating Robotnik at the end of Green Hill Act 3, use Debug mode to put a Giant Ring object on the right side of the animal capsule, have at least 50 rings to make it appear (use Debug if necessary), break the capsule open and your character will run right into the Giant Ring. After exiting the Special Stage, you'll be sent to a VERY unfinished Marble Zone that will progressively corrupt the game the longer you stay there. Resetting the game will fix the problem.
Man, can we all appreciate how your channel is getting better and better? The camera shots, the jokes, recorded footage, your scripts: You're doing a great job! :D
Let me point an oversight in the video at 0:20 : There were phones and emulators capable of running Sonic 1 at full speed. I remember using Nokia N82 (released in 2007) and running a Mega Drive emulator (most likely one of the PicoDrive family) on its Symbian OS. Hell, I even launched a fully-functioning Windows 95 on that beast, but, as you can guess, launching Minesweeper there alone took about a minute. =)
The conversation feel lackluster. I wish it all new game made from ground up, Super Slivers the Future Hedgehog (SFC) and Vile’s Blast Terrorized (MD).
Coming Soon: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for SNES, But does it work on real Hardware? Edit: The f***! I forgot about this comment, didn't knew I predicted the future xd
So many ports of Sonic 1 available out there, half of which I didn't even know existed, I knew there was an awful GBA port from 2006 but wasn't aware that Stealth had a go at porting the game to the GBA without all the terrible asthetics was out there, I only knew of a Knuckles In Sonic 1 port to the GBA which was probably by Stealth also. Have to agree with Nikash Gill, your videos are getting better and better and I like how there's a hint here and there of what's to come. Well done!
0:15 actually, in 2006 era you could already emulate 8bit and 16bit consoles on mobiles pretty decently on several Nokia devices like the nGage, nokia 6600, 6630 and 6680 and more! *IF* i remember right, in the ones i listed, only the nGage and 6600 had some frameskip as they were earlier 2003 devices while the 6630 (relased in 2004) was a bit beefier and the 6680 (from 2005) was even better!
Hi red me! You are making some funny videos and I like those kind of content. No bad words, no bad things, you're doing a good job so keep up this work! =)
I didn't know this existed so I tried it on my GBA and it's pretty great. But the reason that this port is so nice compared to the official port might be down to rom size. This only has Green Hill and one piece of the Labyrinth stage and it's nearly 8mb. I think the largest possible official game size is 32mb. A complete version of this game might be able to fit in 32mb but the official developer would have to consider manufacturing cost of a larger game vs sales, etc.
If you play the mobile version from 2005-06 and Sonic Genesis back to back (as if the sprites didn't already make it obvious) you'll notice they're quite similar
Fun Fact: Entering a special stage in Green Hill Act 3 will eventually send you to an absolutely BROKEN Marble Zone. There’s a video that shows the barely existent state.
I did not know you could connect a GBA and use it as a controller on the GB player... it makes perfect sense now in hindsight, but I cannot believe I never thought about it or even tried it back in the day. Hori released their digital controller in very limited quantities here in the US; I was working at a game store at the time, so I picked one up for playing GBA stuff, but I still would have probably been fine just using the GBA and a link cable lol
Biggest tip is to use Extrem's Game Boy interface rather than the official software disc (official is blurred). With my GameCube, I have a GCHD-MK2 via component cables to the OSSC. Then that to my capture card. :)
Gameboy Player? You really should try to get yourself a GBA Consolizer. It's simply fantastic! I have one and it's a true treat. Oh, and yeah, the GBA can obviously handle a game of this nature. It's FAR more powerful than the hardware inside the Genesis from a technical standpoint.
I think sonic genesis should of been released on the DS instead, because if you think of sonic classic collection on the DS, you see it may should have been ported to the DS instead then.
How can Sonic advance, a game much more complex than anything on the genesis, be handled by the GBA but not sonic 1? Like, is it the GBA’s fault or SEGA?
I could just never get into playing games with the touch screens. I get you can use a controller in some way or another but then I'd have to have the phone propped up. Apparently I'm just weird because everyone seems to do just fine with mobile gaming. I've never tried the Christian Whitehead versions though and maybe they do control better than mobile NES emus for instance
Due to the circumstances under which Sonic 1 gba was release, it's safe to say that the 16-bit original can't be ported to the Game Boy Advance because of was on the platform years prior. Besides, why be angered over the poor quality of the port when Sega had no realistic motivations to create high quality sonic games?
You joke, but Tails actually does have supernatural powers. He's a kitsune. This is basically confirmed in Lost World since he can manipulate individual strands of fur like tentacles, indicating some level of shapeshifting (which also explains how he can helicoptor without the tails clipping through each other. Because they actually are clipping through each other) Also the whole he's a super genius and committed genocide against an entire bird species using the Chaos Emeralds and an arsenal of high powered explosives and napalm probably indicates something going on, too
Funny how the fans seem to do better than SEGA themselves. Now I'll just let my heart sink into my boots as this comment gets buried under tons of other comments that all get at least 1 thumbs up and this comment doesn't get any, just like every other comment I've posted.
Stealth saves the day by fixing the biggest of issues to make an improved gaming experience for players. Really enjoying this series with lots of funny reactions, and clues to a future episode.
I’ve always wondered why the stealth mobile ports of Sonic 1 & 2 never got released on XBL or PSN like the Sonic CD port did? I feel like they would sell like crazy on consoles.
Well, that's reassuring to know. After watching your previous video on Sonic Genesis, I decided to try both versions on my PSP. The Stealth port proved to be too much for the PSP's emulation capability and it lagged really badly, ironically making the janky official release look quicker by comparison.
A really strange game to do, but I’d love to see Sonic Epoch Advance on an episode of BDIWORH! Not sure how well known a Sonic fan game it is, but as a kid I thought it was so cool. It was super different from any other Sonic fan game i had seen at the time, and it ran on a GBA emulator and i thought that was so cool.
A little extra about Sonic 1 GBA… If you use debug at the end of Green Hill Act 3 to spawn a Special Stage ring (granted if you have 50+ rings), you can bypass the intended action of getting booted back to the title screen, and access Special Stage 3, and soon after, Marble Zone. Well, in name, anyway… I don't think there's a good short way to describe what it's like here, other than "invalid data that somehow doesn't crash the game". Also, there's _another_ proof-of-concept port, published in 2009, from Stealth… This time, featuring Sonic 1, 2 and 3 on the Nintendo DS (each of their first zones are fully playable). From what I recollect, he pitched the ROM to Sega in hopes of it being the basis for development on Sonic Classic Collection, but obviously his development work didn't make to official store shelves. Here's its Sonic Retro page; info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_DS_(fan_game)
0:00 I would have to disagree, the classic collection on the Ds is the best way to play Sonic 1. Buttons is what the Ds has over a phone, also instead of using up your phone’s battery, you’ll use the Ds. It may not have CD but it has 3&K which I think most people would rather have.
Each have their pros and cons. But I will agree with you about the physical buttons. I hate touchscreen controls. It actually took me 5 takes at the beginning of that video because every time I wanted to press left, I missed the button 😛
