Speedrun of Sonic Advance 2, Best Ending, on normal difficulty in 2:09:58 RTA - timing starts upon selecting Sonic, and ends upon the in-game timer freezing on the last boss in True Area 53. This speedrun was ran on a gamecube with a GBA Player, using the Gameboy Interface software (You can see my input display at the top!).
This is a bit of a completionist category that's concretely-defined without being dumb. The goal is off of an empty save, to beat the true final level leading to the Best Ending: True Area 53. I don't like calling this 100% since it would mean getting all emeralds with all the other characters and that just honestly isn't fun at all - this could also be argued to include stuff like maxing chao stats, and so on.
Unlocking True Area 53 requires the following:
- Beat the game with Sonic, Cream, Tails, and Knuckles. The game saves completion of each character's story after the score screen of their respective XX Zones.
- Collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds with Sonic. The emeralds are tracked for each character individually, but they (thankfully) only matter for Sonic. Getting an emerald requires collecting all 7 SP Rings of one of the two acts in the corresponding zone in one go without dying (yeah it sucks), and then clearing the special stage.
- See the Chaos Emeralds cutscene after credits. This means I need to watch the credits once (though it doesn't matter with which playthrough).
This run itself isn't amazing persay, but with how volatile advance 2 is (especially for any non-sonic character), and how atrocious boss fights are, this was good enough - my goal was a sub-2:10 and I barely got it, so whatever lol. There's a mix of a lot of great levels and fights in this run, along with a small handful of some disasters, but that's just bound to happen especially in a 2 hour run.
