When it got to Big and you was like SONIC ADVENTURE DOESN’T HAVE A STORY. Not gunna lie, even as a hardcore Sonic Adventure fan. I legit laughed at that line

Amy being the punchingbag instead of Big is somewhat refreshing from a review/lookback of this game and it gets some good laughs out of me. Also, yeah i agree, Amy is my least favorite character to play as in this game too.
@@galfinsp7216 Technically the same can be said for Big, as he had one of the emeralds and his pal Froggy had Chaos' tail and the emerald that Tails used to power the Tornado 2. Not trying to bash either character tho, it's just a bit of a thing for me to make fun of Amy and she just happens to be my least favorite character to play as in this game.

I always thought his relaxed and friendly yet slow thinking personality had a certain charm to it and do think he's always gotten too much crap thrown at him just because he had a weird gimmick in his debut title (he's actually really fun to play as in Heroes, in my team rose runs of that game i tend to switch to Big whenever i can).
It definetly seems like the developers weren't always sure what to do with the characters and their levels, but it still feels like they put in a lot of effort.

I have never been a Sonic fan (I've only ever played Heroes, and never finished it), but even as a non-Sonic fan, this was a very informative video. Also, I love the name Puncho the Magnificent, and he shall be known as such forevermore.
And then became the worst again in 06. Seems like her status as best character was revoked by that game, as even in Heroes, they were far more stronger than Sonic Team. (Except in Sonic Advance 2, Cream wins that by a land slide with the bringer of doom known as Cheese the chao)
when you figure out the whole hitting down on bigs stages. the hate becomes over blown still sucks cause fishing but its not as bad when you know how to hook the fish.
I honestly did not mind Big that much either. The only time I had problems with him was when Froggy bugged the hell up and did not let me fish him up when he was close to being out of the water. Amy is indeed the lowest point, but I did not have much problem controlling her as you seemed to have (except on uphills, those suck no matter what). Also, I am surprised you barely made any mention of the Chao Garden, but I guess you’ll leave that for Adventure 2 since it is far more refined there.
Honestly I enjoy 3D sonic. I enjoy Adventure 1 more than Adventure 2 in a lot of ways. And yes I did replay them both just last year with my husband. Never got why people jumped on them, they're fun and perfectly serviceable, albeit with terrible lip syncing on cutscenes if you care about that. Game's still fun to play, outside Big's 3 missions. I personally enjoyed Amy, I find the hammer flip to make speedrunning missions fun. Yeah it's got some jank, yeah it's flawed, these definitely aren't masterpieces. But that describes pretty much everything of the era, and nothing was a deal breaker for me.
Is Puncho the Magnificent going to be a thing now or is the angry red guy whose name escapes me going to have a new name in every video he shows up in? =P
Nah, Ice Cap is fantastic. There are so many shortcuts that allow you to get to the snowboarding section in under a minute. Still, the best stages are Red Mountain and Speed Highway if you ask me. There are so many opportunities to shave seconds off of your best run and loads of secret nooks and crannies to find items in. They are infinitely replayable levels.
With the floral backgrunds and all of the No More Heroes references, I can't stop imagining that Bumbles is just FU trying out RU-vid and slowly losing his mind experiencing us humans and our insanity.
I've always found my relation to sonic games interesting. When I was growing up I loved a lot of these sonic games and played them to completion, but whenever I revisit them I don't enjoy them nearly as much. Thinking about it some more, I feel like they completely missed the point of having multiple playable characters. In 2D sonic games like, hell lets just use Sonic Mania as an example since it's fresher in my memory and also the best sonic game, you don't play through *bits* of stages other characters did. You play through the entire stage as each alternate character. And generally speaking each character can be described as "Sonic, but...." Meaning things like Tails is Sonic but he can fly, Knuckles is Sonic but he can glide and climb walls, etc. Then the stages themselves were designed with multiple paths throughout the entire level with a clear pattern of being on top being faster while falling lower meaning slower. And while some areas were only accessible by certain characters, generally the different playable character's abilities just helped you access different parts of the levels that were harder, but not impossible to get to as sonic. After all being able to fly as tails means it's easier to catch yourself after a bad jump or just straight up get to a place you had trouble with. This approach to character design also very much encouraged multiple playthroughs. Sonic is at its best when you're playing it like a speedrunner, repeating levels over and over in order to try and improve and beat them faster each time. Finding new routes and shortcuts to explore and so on. Having every character go through the entirety of all the same levels just reinforces that. By comparison, the level design in most 3D sonic games are a joke. The Casino level in this is basically just 3 different areas slapped together between the minigames, the lobby, and the sewers, not because it's cohesive level design, but because they needed a hunting area for knuckles, the minigames for sonic, and the sewers for tails. Even one of the better levels with Speed Highway falls prey to this. The last part of the level you blast through in like 5 seconds as sonic, but the only reason it's there is because they needed some place for Knuckles to have his level. The characters aren't cohesive to one another, and that's not even going into things like Big and Gamma's levels. And as a result you're only enjoying anything remotely like sonic gameplay for at most like a third of the game. with the other 2/3rd being full of things like fishing and treasure hunting and a half-assed shooter. And yea there are still shortcuts and hidden areas in each level but now instead of playing through a level multiple times naturally because you wanna play as every character and naturally finding them, even the levels you repeat as other characters are tailored and changed to suit that character. So any shortcuts you find while playing as Sonic are useless when playing as Tails or Amy or whatever, cause even when you go to the same area, you're not really actually playing the same level. And your abilities are too different to really matter. And the shortcuts are much less interesting imo. Like early on in Emerald Coast for example when you can boost up the ramp to skip to the last part of the bridge. Like yeah woo that's cool and all. But just look at literally any 2D sonic level and how it has like 3 or 4 paths through the entire level stacked on top of each other. info.sonicretro.org/images/2/21/ManiaGHZ1.png Like it isn't about just trying to find those shortcuts where you can use the geometry of the level to launch yourself in a weird angle to get up somewhere early. It's about constantly trying to avoid falling to a lower path and constantly trying to get up higher and go faster.
Even after all these years, I think I would still consider this to be one of, if not my favorite, Sonic game (at the very least it's in the top 5 if not the top 3). To me the campaign structure feels like the most logical evolution of the slightly different campaigns for Sonic and Puncho in the third-and-a-halfth entry, since Sonic's story on its own works well enough as a playthrough of a "Sonic" game, while the rest of the character stories also feel complete enough in their own right that you can feel a sense of accomplishment for beating each of them, even Big the Cat's as out of place as his fishing levels are, with the Super Sonic story feeling like the "true ending" for completionists yet not being too demanding in terms of requirements compared to some other games in the series (fuck the Special Stages from Sonic Heroes). One could make the argument that the complete story of Sonic Adventure 2 is better, but the way it's structured is less satisfying to experience in my opinion, since both campaigns just feel like half of one story with the endings basically being cliffhangers for the Last Story.
6:03 Given New Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario 3D World, I feel like Zelda and Animal Crossing, two other flagship series of Nintendo's, woulda been better examples of series without a traditional title on the Wii U, seeing as how the former only got a Wii U entry right as said system was sent out the door and the latter straight-up only had one really bad spinoff on it. Though, interestingly, the Game Boy Advance didn't have a single traditional Mario game, only remakes and spinoffs.

Can definitely say that Amy is much more tolerable in the original and, thanks to mods, you can improve the game so it's more like the Dreamcast version. Also the Amy bashing is unforgivable

Big’s...biggest issue.... is his controls are unintuitive. They’re really not meant for conventional controllers and they don’t give you a good idea to play him. If it was easier get a handle of big I think most people wouldn’t mind him say for looking for people to bitch aka sonic fans.
I remember playing this game when I was younger and The one thing I remember is whenever playing Sonic and you start going through levels Amy will come out of nowhere and demand attention, I legit hated every time I heard Amy's theme song
Gamma's story is by far the most tragic and the one I love the most. Be it his own AI or the animal within grappling with what he is to what he wants to be.

Man I really hope Bumbles's annoying friends from the therapy/car repair don't make another appearance. Nobody likes them. I just wanted to watch Bumbles (this is a Sonic joke btw). In all seriousness, I liked how Sonic tried to be a bit more ambitious and tell larger stories. Defined characters like Tails and Puncho are a reason I like this series and this game was sort of the beginning of that.
Wait, DX is a WORSE port? That explains why people keep having issues with it that I don't recall. Like there was some jank on the Dreamcast version but not nearly as much as people seem to keep complaining about.
Watching your Amy gameplay is bizarre to me. While it was always a bit awkward to maintain the sprint when dealing with turns and the like, just watching your footage makes it seem like you had a much more extreme experience than I did. Maybe it's because I played the XBox360 port (and fairly recently at that), but I never found it too terribly difficult to maintain or gain sprint when on flat ground, even when navigating turns.

Bumbles, are you really trying to tell me the Wii U didn't have a traditional Mario game, but the 3DS and Switch did? I'm gonna need you to show your work on that one: the Wii U had two new main line Mario releases in 3D World and NSMBU (excluding NSLU because it's just the same thing) which to be fair aren't the most standout performers and do lack a real 3D entry, but it pretty much exactly parallels the 3DS's main line entries of 3D Land and NSMB2. You could've said Animal Crossing, Kirby, even freakin' Brain Age, all in the top 10 best selling Nintendo franchises which the other two had and the Wii U didn't and I'd have to agree, instead based on the Mario in the background it seems like you're trying to tell me that the Wii U didn't have Mario and I just don't see how that could be the case. Anyway, love your stuff, hope you're doing well. Pardon my rant, I just happen to be one of the few people who seem to remember the Wii U fondly so I wanted to get my two cents in.
It's a warcrime to not use the Sonic Adventure 1 Dreamcast Conversion mod as it is a much better experience and a lot more accurate to the Dreamcast version plus being able to play at a higher resolution.
Feels at least original that Amy is the one who's considered the worst of the 6 characters here. I wished you tried SA but with the Dreamcast looks, it's doable on PC. It feels like the game look better.
