I *ADORE* this Sonic so much. Despite being a destructive invader, Sonic doesn’t want to just trap Chaos but save him from his own anger and turmoil. To calm him down and put him at peace. This Sonic is a true hero through and through.

I love this boss so much. It's super easy and simple but it's effective. Sonic isn't trying to beat Chaos here, he's trying to help him. 4000 years in the master emerald only knowing emotions like anger and hatred led to this. Chaos is not a monster, he was just defending the creatures he was supposed to protect and was sealed away because he lashed out. Sonic, now fully understanding the situation, is trying to calm him down. Open Your Heart is literally just Sonic telling Chaos "just calm down man, everything will be okay."

Here's a little fact I know about sa1. The events leading up to Sonic Adventure were actually hinted at in the Japanese manuals of the Sonic games that came before Sonic Adventure. First, the manual for Sonic the Hedgehog states that the Chaos Emeralds give energy to all living beings but they can also be used for nuclear or high energy laser weapons thanks to science and technology. The manual for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 indicates that there was an ancient civilization that tried to abuse the Chaos Emeralds and were wiped out by a god overnight. The manual for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 expanded upon the lore of the ancient civilization while also showing that Knuckles believed the Death Egg is the egg of a legendary dragon that wiped out the civilization. You can tell that elements from the manuals were referenced in Sonic Adventure; the idea that the Chaos Emeralds can be used for laser weapons was brought back into Sonic Adventure 2, the civilization mentioned in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 turns out to be the Knuckles Clan and were wiped out by Chaos, and the legendary dragon that was mentioned in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 turns out to be Perfect Chaos, while the dragon's egg turned out to not be the Death Egg, but presumably Chaos' egg, since he was a Chao and Chao hatch from eggs. Finally, one honorary mention goes out to a Japanese strategy guide for Sonic Adventure, which mentions that while Dr. Eggman was building the Final Egg in the Mystic Ruins, he stumbled upon a stone tablet which he learned about the existence of Chaos, leading him to start the events of Sonic Adventure. Sadly, all of these details in the manuals were lost in localization when the games were brought to the U.S.. That means people believed Sonic never talked (That was due to technology limits, Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car was the first game in the Sonic series that had voice acting, and Sonic did have a voice in commercials.), the games had no story (technology was limited so there were no cutscenes, leading to the story having to be told in manuals), people feeling that the transition to Sonic Adventure felt like a western animation transitioning to an anime (The Sonic the Hedgehog series borrowed a lot more elements from Shōnen anime than Western cartoons), the idea that the series is divided between a "Classic" and "Modern" series (Japanese dialogue in Sonic Adventure indicates that events from previous games such as Sonic CD and Sonic 3&K did happen, it's just that SEGA decided to split the series into "Classic" and "Modern" to pander to fans), and the fact that people found it jarring to go from the Western continuity to the Japanese continuity. (Characters and events from media such as the Archie Comics never really existed or occurred, and the writers had to make stories in order to sync up with the Japanese canon, such as killing Robotnik and replacing him with Eggman, or destroying Charmy Bee's mind to make him have the mindset of a child in the body of an adult.). At this point, I'd say that the Sonic the Hedgehog series is a massive localization nightmare. There are things Japanese fans like, and there things American fans don't like. There are things Japanese fans don't like, and there are things American fans like. While I don't think the initial Japanese concept would be a good way to present the series, I'd say the final concept for the series that was laid out in the manuals was a perfect series that should have been properly localized for the Western audiences. I'd also mention that there are a few Western-created things that I can stomach. For example, giving Dr. Eggman a proper name of Dr. Robotnik is a change I can get behind. I think it's just silly to be named "Eggman" in real life. (I mean, there are two people known as Susan Eggman and Michael Eggman.) It's just that I would go with the idea of Robotnik being his real last name and "Eggman" being a nickname he adopted, kind of like how fans see Dr. Robotnik in the sequel to the Sonic Movie. I also like the worldbuilding for levels such as Casino Park and White Park that was presented in the Archie Comics and IDW Comics, because that gives context for the existence of those levels. At this point, I'm thinking about reimagining the series, sort of like a reboot. I want to incorporate things from Japanese Sonic media such as details from the manuals, while also incorporating things from American Sonic media, such as the worldbuilding from the Archie and IDW comics. I like the idea of combining concepts from different forms of media to create something bigger. That's one of reasons why I like Paramount Pictures' take on Sonic the Hedgehog; while they follow the Japanese canon by having the movie take place before the events of the first game, (the first game stated that it wasn't the first time Sonic and Eggman met,) they still borrowed ideas and concepts from American Sonic media, such as the rings being used like the warp rings in the Archie comics, or an owl taking care of Sonic, which harkens back to a story called Stay Sonic. Our mixing of cultures is crucial to our survival. We rely on other people's creations to survive, yet we must be willing to share our creations for them to survive as well. This is applicable to Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as real life.

When I played this game years ago I always thought that chaos was a living liquid lunatic after the Final Battle he became harmless total mind blown for my childhood playthrough.

I always stand by the thought that the entire fight should have had theme music play not just the first 1 part. All the build up just for choir piece to play for the second part. Really kills the vibe.

Funniest shit always is how eggman got 1-shotted and just blows up and floats away like those Pokémon villians.

Sonic used to end his games by fighting Jim Carrey. Then he took a break from that and started fighting eldritch abominations for about 10 years. I kind of miss that era of final boss battles.

The song choice was perfect for this fight. Open Your Heart is incredible, and I don't think anything else would have fit better. It also set up Crush 40 for making many other bangers for the series. So happy they got Geoli and Senoue (I probably spelled those wrong but whatever) for this and I hope they produce another song at one point, maybe for the Sonic Movie 3.
