I love how your relationship with the game is like how you like an good old pan that you buy on the cheap when you move, and you made so much eggs on it that only it can make then "just right" for you, even it the handle feels kinda loose to the uncultured, you know that pan has you back
Maybe I'm biased but I loved Lost Words! I'm mexican and everything from the snake motive to the mosaics did feel very authentic to the 'ancient' culture I knew, more so than all those others 'ancient temple' levels you see in games. And to my surprise I later learn that the Sonic Team actually came to Mexico, to Yucatan to learn about the Mayan temples! A very worth research trip in my opinion.
Fellow Mexican here 👀👀 i also live on Yucatan. This is very interesting and nice to learn :00 also our beach waters are aesthetic AF i love them so much 😳😳😳😳
i honestly didn't do it justice, sacrified talking about some of the cool setpieces for the sake of a joke...the mirror area is so cute! that's like, a whole mechanic they use just for that section! smh past hazel, smh
I couldn't care for the story at all, but lost world is a game I'd want to get a handle on. The parkour elements are so promising if focused and tweaked, the OST has so much variety and quirkiness that is underappreciated and it's not a boost game for once (tho it is 2.5D) honestly the run button is cool, i mean come on. We don't need to boost infinitely all the time, controlled speed is what makes for awesome platforming and exploration in the 3D space~ -
shes called tracer because she leaves a trail (cause fast,) like tracer rounds. It also has nothing to do with her outfit or mobility, she was a pilot. tracer does less free running than lucio...
Early 2000s sonic fandom: sonic adventure is good Early 2010s: sonic adventure is bad because it's a busted piece of shit Present day: sonic adventure is good because it's a busted piece of shit
Glad I checked first, I was going to write the same thing. It really says something that this fever dream clusterfuck video that spends half its runtime shitting on the game has done by far the best job selling me on Sonic Adventure's appeal out of all the gushing long-winded essays I've seen. I don't know _what_ it says, though. Just something.
You didn't say anything really "deep" about the game like a lot of video essays about video games I watch do, but you somehow reminded me of exactly how I felt when I played SA on the dreamcast as a kid. Yeah, it does kind of have a special look and feel, huh? I beat all the character's storylines with the help of a guide and would go back and play the other characters and just run around that world finding "stuff to do." It was just a neat place. This was a good video. You're a good youtuber. Thanks, hazel.
Same this video resonated so much with me as a Reno native native who grew up with sonic adventure, literally must be something with this city that makes this game click
its even better when theres nostalgia for something you have experienced as well. I had that in this and in the one where she mentioned that old pokemon fansite tr rose's rockin
This just became my new favorite explanation of why "janky" isn't a flaw, but that unique exotic spice that can elevate an okay game to an all time favorite
This is such a good video but now I'm so curious about that prospective stream because I'd genuinely love to hear Hazel's opinions on everything about Tikal and the final story segment, thematically. Always struck me strangely deeply for a children's game, and even now it still gets to me.
I'm so happy to see more people as of late like me who genuinely really appreciate how ambitious and always moving Sonic was for the longest time. It's an aspect of the series that made it my favorite video game series ever alongside Kingdom Hearts, Sonic means sm to me
Ah, yes. Super Mario Odyssey, one of my favorite 3D Collectathon Platformers. Y'know, it was odd how they turned Mario from a lovable, mustachioed tiny plumber manlet, into a wisecracking, green version of TJ "Henry" Yoshi that incessantly makes pop-culture references, but hey, who am I to judge Shigeru Miyamoto's ever so ambitious vision? Clearly 'ol Shiggy knew what he was doing.
Hazel videos always make me so happy, her energy and childlike adoration of simple details and things that aren't generally considered "good" inspires me so much.
I've seen a bunch of little Sonic easter eggs and songs in previous videos. Did not expect a Sonic video to be about my all time favorite Sonic game though. This makes me happy.
Sonic Adventure is a game that always fascinated me, and this video is perfectly on par with how I feel about this game, it's not perfect, but the fact that it's not perfect is what makes it fun, it's always a blast to revisit it every once in a while and all these locations never get old, amazing work as always!
I've been a lifelong Sonic, Mario, and FLCL fan, so when you said "If Mario Odyssey is The Pillows then Sonic Adventure is a Number Girl song" I HAD to stop what I was doing and find out who Number Girl was. Turns out they're my new favorite band, thank you so much!!
Sky Deck & Hot Shelter are my favorite video game levels of all time. So much detail hidden away in the windows, in the structure design - hell, the two versions of hot shelter meet up at the end, and sky deck's level design follows the actual ship's underside and wing shape. I love the fish in the aquarium! This game really is one of the best games out there.
2:27 I literally squealed when I saw that spin dash jump. Everytime I see somebody do a cool trick I haven’t done yet I’m inspired to do a whole new playthrough of this game
As someone too young to have experienced when the internet wasn't a complete corporate hellscape, I really appreciate your videos for just how genuine of a view they are into that era of nerd culture, and how well you capture the experience through music, editing, and voiceovers. Also any time you mention an IRL anecdote it sounds like the premise of an indie horror game and I think that's a beautiful skill
I absolutely loved this video. It was so heartfelt and genuine in a way that actually made me smile to myself several times. The little personal touches you add to your work go a long way. It’s always a pleasure to hear your thoughts
@@themangoman9315 Classic Sonic is pretty solid. But in 3D, I'll always take the freedom (and jankiness that can result from it) of the Adventure games over the much more restrictive boost games. I don't even want a remake of SA2 if they patch the super bounce (or remove Eggman saying Yosh)
@@TFSned "classic sonic is pretty solid" Tried to play the originals and without widescreen they fall apart. It's hard to go back to the originals after Mania. SA1 & SA2 aged way better. Then i played Sonic 3 AIR, fixed the issues (and constant 60fps). Still waiting for proper official port of the originals for PC
@@TFSned Both 2D and 3D sonic have their strengths and weaknesses. Personally, i find 3D games way more playable because i can see where i'm going. There was a lot of BS in the originals about enemy placement or obstacles (looking at you, Marble Garden and Carnival Night...), isn't like i wanted to rage quit but moments like those are so annoying. Now, imagine playing these games on the SNES's 8:7 aspect ratio, lmao.
I thought I was the only one that loved this game this much. Sonic in general means alot to me and that is pretty that got me and my boyfriend talking to each other.
Everything about this game is so nostalgic to me, the sound track, the atmoshpere, throwing the man statue in the ocean and watching him return slowly, caring for the chao. It may not be my all time fav sonic game but hot dang is it the most beautiful and fun!
I was in love with Sonic Adventure as a kid, just being in that world with all of it's needlessly complex details and lack of explanation for almost anything in the environment just made my brain feel good. It helped that exploring didn't have a fail-state the way the actual stages had (or for me at the time like school had over and over again) you get to actually relax and just enjoy yourself, I loved it so much. Another series that gave me similar good brain feels as a kid was Megaman Legends and Missadventures of Tron Bonne, those ones even looked like anime which was still so hard to find at the time! Would love to see more modern games embrace this kind of immersive, ambiguous world building. I get the obstacles it presents, it's a lot of work on assets that don't really drive the game or plot forward, but the same can be said for Ghibli food scenes and we all know how we feel about those. If anyone has recommendations for modern games with that kind of chill open world vibes I'm all ears
Yes exactly well said. I dont think alot of people recognize the more subtle parts of SA that make it a classic. The Megaman Legends also gave me a similar feeling.
Your reasons for loving this game are similar to why the tony hawk games are some of my favorites of all time. Mainly the freedom to go anywhere even not intended and the glitches that add to the game giving you more options.
I'm late to comment, but my oldest memory with video games was playing the Genesis Sonic games on my brother's PS2 with the Mega Collection. I still have not played Adventure but the vibes look IMMACULATE
The x360 controller is perfectly repairable. I have a massive issue with people throwing away genuine hardware that is easy enough to refurbish, so thanks for holding onto it until you find someone who can fix it up for you.
I feel this video on a spiritual level. It’s very similar to how I feel about the series as a whole but especially ‘06. Man I remember that day so clearly. it was new years eve and my friend got me to play their copy of sonic ‘06 and through that I died a lot due to broke ass tom-jankery and then got shot out of egg cerberus arena like a rocket, didnt die, the map disappeared and my sides hurt from laughing so much. Friend who had nearly 100% the game never saw this before. it’s was a christmas miracle. that was the turning point where i bought all the 3D sonic games at that EXACT moment and just had a blast taking in all the sights and broke design with it. Despite the iffy programming across the board one thing remains constant: there’s an earnestness in team sonics games that fill me with joy and wonder.
Videos like this are always a joy; when the game is particularly close to the creator's heart, due to nostalgia or otherwise, it really makes itself felt.
8:27 I'm from Reno NV and I'm so glad you brought the Peppermill up lmao. For most people casino levels seem like this exotic and colorful stage theme, but for me it just brings me back to home. Getting five bucks from my dad so I could go to the arcade and get owned on some IIDX while my life expectancy slowly drops from all the cigarette smoke. But yeah shout-out to all the Reno homies lol
Damn, you had me at Sega Smash pack 2. Some of my earliest gaming memories was pulling multiple all-nighters playing Shining Force until my eyes glazed over 😵💫
Gosh, this video is such a mood. Both Sonic Adventure games have a special place in my childhood, jank and all. I spent more hours in the Chao garden that I care to admit
I think I wrote the original "Sonic Adventure GLitch Guide" before Rattleman's more extensive one back in the day. I really agree with you about the "feel" of Sonic Adventure and how it feels like dares you to break out and find new places. A lot of games of that era in general(latter part of the 90s to early 00s, i.e. Build Engine games to Source Engine games) had this really interesting energy to them, the "What's over there?" factor. They really trade in that sort of liminal space vibe a lot too. Most modern games don't necessarily have that energy to them even if they're otherwise more playable. Like, there was something about Duke 3D that made me want to clip out the levels and end up inadvertently finding those Levellord messages. There's something that made me want to figure out how to get Amy in Emerald Coast, or see the top of the waterfall in Mystic Ruins(which is the only logical place the Chaos 4 bossfight can happen). This was the era of Sonic 2 Beta, so I was *convinced* there were all kinds of left over things just out of bounds. There were definitely one or two oddities, it's a shame there wasn't more. I feel like games becoming more polished in some ways might have killed that feeling a bit, though it depends. Breath of the Wild gives me that feeling, much of the time, and it is overall pretty polished. Even better, I can actually CAN go "over there", though as you point out, it is something the devs intended rather than left a nudge nudge wink wink door open to, so it doesn't have that same rebellious adventerous quality. But, it still somehow captures that similar atmosphere to wonder i felt playing games like Sonic Adventure, Half Life 2 and Morrowind. Some games just have that quality of "being" there even if they're not visually super realistic. Of course, I played Sonic Adventure on a fairly small TV so it probably made the seems harder to spot. It's a testament to it's atmosphere that I COULD feel taken in with such a small screen though, something only a few Nintendo DS/Switch games have really managed. I really agree with things like how Tails' workshop looks like he built it too. It has such an oddly homely vibe to it. I think Mystic Ruins in general is one of my favourite video game locations ever. I do disagree with Sky Deck not being cool though. I think people really sell short how amazing Sonic Adventure was when it came out and how it's atmosphere still holds up in many ways. The SADX port is partly responsible of course, even if it has better water.
It's honestly crazy how much knowing how to use the spindash opens up the game. I saw a speedrunner spindash up the first boardwalk in Emerald Coast, paused the video, then proceeded to crush all my previous clear times on the Sonic stages. I love this game, jank and all Also the Amy stages are underrated
When I saw this in my feed I immediately lit up. I mean, what's better than a new Hazel video? Why, a new Hazel video about one of my all-time favourite games, Sonic Adventure of course! And as someone who's had to listen to YEARS upon YEARS of 'omg Sonic Adventure is bad actually' bs, it's so good to see someone else who gets what's just plain FUN about the game. Like just revving up Sonic and bouncing around those 3D environments like your a goddamn ping-pong ball? Yeah man, that's the shit. It's just... fun in the same way being a kid and going down a massive hill on a scooter is fun, y'know? Also, 'loud florescent casino carpet print' is the PERFECT way to describe the aesthetic of 90s Sonic Team games. And also just peak aesthetic in general. Anyways, great video, 10/10, etc.
thank you so much for this hazel, i always appreciate the love you have for whatever subject you choose to tackle, and that insane sonic game means so SO much to me. it's lodged in my spine. imagine this third world kid who didn't know english very well playing this game for hours on end, feeling that rush of endorphins whenever sonic would speed across these rollercoasters of sand and stone and metal, and I didn't know what a fucking glitch was, what bad game design was, I just knew it was frustrating as hell sometimes and I never finished the whole game because of it, but I remember me, just sitting there on our old computer, immersed so deeply in that strange world, making up stories in my mind, enjoying that particular and distinct feeling that something is speaking to me.
i like this style of video because it's not like something that was put together for the sake of talking about sonic adventure, it feels like listening to a friend go on a tangent about their hyperfixation with sonic adventure almost unprompted, in the best way
Great vid! Definitely brought back some fond memories of SA1. Man, I remember watching my brother play it on PC and thinking it was literally the coolest thing in existence. I played it for the first time a few years back and despite the weird quirks of DX and the steam port, I was surprised with how fun it was. My younger cousin would come over and play it too, and it was honestly kind of a proud moment for me when he started getting good at Emerald Coast, brought a good ol' boomer tear to my eye
3:11 I can already see the google search for this lmao "what are parkour people called?" Loved the video. I grew up with SA1 & 2 and this felt like a very grounded, but fun take on the first game.
I nearly teared up towards the end of the video, I always enjoy seeing people appreciate Sonic games, no matter how old they are, and no matter how broken they may seem :p
I'm so glad this video introduced me to your channel. As a kid, I was convinced all of those skyboxes were actual 3D areas that I could explore if I could just get past the invisible walls. I love games that can make you believe there's a whole world out there, which is often more fun than actually having miles of empty space. Both Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart Double Dash let you see other levels in the distance. It's great knowing where you are on Isle Delphino from the different landmarks, which is a great skill to have when you explore places in real life too.
i found hazel pretty recently, and she's quickly risen to the top of my "i will search this person up to see if they have new content out" list because the commentary in her videos is always great. this video makes so extremely happy that I can't explain it because sonic adventure holds an incredibly special place in my heart. good content!! interesting scripts/topics!!! she talks about her wife!!!! i love it. anyway, uh, good video!!!
bigs levels are actually some of my favorites!! the controls are a bit wonky. But really simple to understand once you get a grasp on them. I used to love just vibing out for hours in seaside coast or Ice-Mountian or twinkle park, just floating along in the water as the time ticks boy. Its so good. Its so, sooo good, and you're missing out on the best secret area of the whole game if you've never played it through. Thank you for making this video, its so tiring hearing people joke about the freaks in the fandom or 'durr hurr 06 bad!' and stalling any legitimate conversation about this game series. The physics are fun!!! Its fun to play!! And thats the whole point of any game!! being fun to play!!! You're absolutly 100% Right and i'm so glad you said it.
I fucking loved adventure battle 2. I played it on the GameCube and it’s one of my favorite gaming memories. Adventure was wild too. I was so frustrated with it as a kid lol couldn’t never beat it but I loved the Vybes
The sum up wlat the end kinda hit me emotionally really hard. Sonic goes fast. This was really powerfull hazel. Thank you greatly. I finally want to play this game, cause i needed someone to show me the beauty of sonic adventure
this video is great i think ive found a new favorite youtube channel. i love sonic and the bands you referenced you are literally so cool keep making content
I feel like Sky Deck is the level that best embodies that feeling of continuity that you speak about. The level doesn't just exist in a general location but takes place over specific parts of the Egg Carrier, starting out on the underside of the left-wing, moving to the top of it in the second act, and then ending the level off at the back of the ship between the two back jets. It's the level that most feels like a concrete place in the world because you can see where it exists outside of the level itself, the hub and level complimenting each other well. The actions in the level even have an effect outside of it. The further section of the left-wing falling off (during the second act) is most likely why the ship loses altitude and crashes. The broken section and a destroyed giant cannon (the one at the end of the second act) even appear on the Egg Carrier's CGI model as it crashes, showing that the cutscene was created with the level in mind.
I've personally never been a huge fan of Sonic (I was an Animal Crossing kid, which just might be the exact opposite of Sonic in every way), but I love watching people be passionate about things they like :)
I love hearing Hazel say 'my wife'. I asked myself the question, replaying SA2 as an adult whether or not it is a good game or if I just liked it for the nostalgia and I never really came to a conclusion.
I thank SADX for teaching me to love broken translations. In Russia there used to be one and it was so funny that one guy made a series out of voicing over the broken lines
Your editing style and transitions are so nice and also wow. I've never felt like someone knew every one of my opinions about one of my favorite games and not only that but SHARED THEM!!! Thank u for this video ^^
