There is a very specific genre of music that isn't made anymore that is "Japanese lyrics translated directly into english with no attempt to alter for english rhyme scheme and sung by a small time struggling performer so it sounds like the singer is making it up as they go along" that was everywhere in the late 80's to the early 2000's and the pinnacle of that genre is Dreamcast era Sonic.
Sonic Adventure's OST really did dictate how music in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise would go from here, and I 100% approve of this direction! Here's hoping you'll eventually get to the rest of the series... But first, I'm going to push Pizza Tower to the top so it'll be in the next round of voting! Hopefully this still counts for upvoting OSTs.
Im Sad Sonic music is going way more into Techno and EDM right now. But they still seem to want to push metal and rock seeing the Frontiers Boss themes
1:14:26 I LOVED seeing the baffled smile on his face of “wait what?” Such an iconic song from an iconic let’s play haha, loved seeing him visibly surprise by where the song went.
I’m glad to see Dan checking out one of the best Sonic soundtracks. This soundtrack is what really cemented Sonic’s association with rock, thanks to Jun Senoue’s amazing guitar work (also props to Fumie Kumatani and Kenichi Tokoi, they don’t get enough appreciation).
100% agree on Kumatani and Tokoi not getting enough credit, they were both absolutely amazing on the secret rings soundtrack and made that games music stand out greatly.

Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack is phenomenal, how are people not recommending it more?
@@hypertails2there's line where she saids she wouldn't mind painting herself blue for sonic, another line where she says sonic reminders her of parsley and the most obvious one "I do understand the feelings of a Persian cat (the sphinx looked so cute, I had to shave it)
5:07:51, in other official recordings of the same song, such as the in-game version you hear during the game's credits, you can hear Johnny Gioelli going "allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllright" at this part.
I just think it's funny how it's technically video game music but it's also technically just Dan reacting to a song from Crush 40, it would be like if he started doing artist album reactions lol
Yeah I think they call that the "DC" Version (Dreamcast) I loved that version which to me is the original. Especially when they drop out the music at the end and you hear Johnny "Yeahhhh....eaaayhhh" 😂 legendary stuff
27:46 - I thought he was going to mention the bass during the horn breakdown. The bass and the horns complement each other PERFECTLY in this section. Also, I REALLY wish My Sweet Passion didn't fade out; I would do anything to hear the end.
Sonic Adventure sports one of my all-time favorite game soundtracks too. And its tracks are impressively varied. Sonic games had long had good soundtracks up to that point, but I loved how SA1 brought that legacy into the Dreamcast age. SEGA generally knew how to pull together great music in its heyday, and I'm glad to see the SONIC franchise carry the torch.
I hope this helps encourage the Sonic CD love - the game’s Japanese soundtrack is phenomenal. You should definitely give it a listen, it’s pure 90s funk and it’s awesome.
"We don't talk about Sonic Spinball" No, let's talk about Sonic Spinball! Because that options theme, as a composition, is solid _at worst!_ Where they dropped the ball was in the implementation of the sounds used to play it. There's fanmade recreations which fix that issue.
Yeah I had to call it out, the game had a great soundtrack, but they chose the absolute worst sounds to use for the options. I would normally just blame the chipset for, but the rest of the game sounds fine so it's a really baffling decision
The hall of mirrors where Fakery Way plays is a really neat concept. Amy's whole gameplay is being chased by an indestructible robot, and that section of Twinkle Park is one that only she can access. There's one particular room in which the camerawork tries to screw you over, by focusing on the mirror wall's _reflection_ of you (angled in such a way that it seems to be focused on the real you as normal) as you get chased down that particular corridor full of trap doors.
I made it to the first hour of this stream, and got a chance to stop by for a half hour or so about 3 and a half hours in. 1 - This stream was lots of fun. Definitely my favorite one of your's I've been to so far. 2 - I was obsessed with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 as a kid, and have been listening to their OSTs ever since, for over 20 years. I didn't think you would be able to pick out or explain anything that would be new to me or that I didn't already notice. I was wrong. Even for the short amount of time I was on I still learned a bunch about lots of these songs. I look forward to catching what I missed yesterday!
You have no idea how pumped I am to see that you’re covering this OST! SA1 has one of the best and most diverse soundtracks in gaming, as unlike its sequel which bases its music on the characters with location coming 2nd, SA1 bases the music on purely just the location. It builds an awesome atmosphere that keeps me coming back to listen to this OST, along with cementing it as my number 1 Sonic game.
I wouldn't be surprised about the Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation thing cause Michael Jackson did do some collaboration work for Sonic 3 and Knuckles for the OST in 94' and Adventure first released in 98'
@@MustacheDLuffy it’s basically saying that Amy wants to be cute for Sonic. Since the myth says that the Sphinx had a coat so beautiful that it made other cats jealous, she shaves it so she can have its coat instead We also get this with the lyric “I won’t mind painting myself blue for you”, she’s listing ways she’d change her appearance for Sonic’s attention
It's hard for me to pick a favorite track in Sonic Adventure. Skydeck A Go! Go!, Bad Taste Aquarium, Crazy Robo, and Crank the Heat Up!! are very difficult contenders. Awesome to see you analyze the whole soundtrack man!
That guy in chat who says there's no rhyme in the song. The song's first lyrics: Thunder, rain and lightning Danger, water rising Clamor, sirens wailing Right after the chorus: Ancient cities blazing Shadows keep attacking Little children crying I think he's wrong xD
cmon who said there's no rhyme, they said song isnt as rhymy as today's standards, like it follows mostly ababc, which's weird, but with gioeli voice, it sounds awesome
Sonic has some of the most iconic music in gaming and I'm so glad to see you reacting to more of it. I hope you can listen to the other amazing songs this franchise has to offer.
It blows my mind how many amazing soundtracks have been produced for the Sonic franchise. It’s the one thing Sonic Team has been pretty consistent with in terms of creating high-quality content.
Yeah, I put this on at work, watching you work 😂 Was great hearing someone talk about the music on an educated level at all, you might enjoy collabing with Alex Yard and Knuckles, who does music theory videos on Sonic. But my favorite part was hearing appreciation for the jazz; it's present up through to 2008's Sonic Unleashed. "Arid Sands - Night" is one of my favorite tracks in the franchise.
Seems like you have perfect pitch with how accurately you play back the chords upon first listen, unless your pitch memory and relative pitch are really on point. As someone with perfect pitch, I can say you got them correct. Good analysis overall. Subscribed.
So excited to see someone react to this soundtrack it’s so amazing!

I can't be the only who loves the airy guitar in Sky Deck act 1, idk if it's the reverb or what, but it does sound like it's been played in the sky, it's really cool!
Yes! Thank you for saying that! I’ve always thought the reverb on that track takes it to a whole other level. It’s just the right amount to create the “open sky” atmosphere, but the arrangement is spread out enough tonally so it doesn’t sound muddy… I also love the guitar dive-bomb sounds on “General Offensive” for giving off that same vibe.
Took a break from the spindash challenge (on Chaos island) and now I’m learning the chords to Adventure songs. 😳 Those chorus riffs are simple and fun!
How do you keep looking like you get younger and younger each time I tune into your live recordings?! I'm so glad you enjoyed this soundtrack. It's so good! And I love Sonic Adventure 2 as well. Sonic songs are so amazing. Lazy Days ~Livin' In Paradise~ is my favorite Character Theme in this game.
Great vod! First time catching live that time too, my guy jammed on Final Egg 1 that made me smile :3. Looking forward to the next soundtrack (Hopefully Sonic Adv. 2 hehe)
I gotta say your smile off put me at first until I got far enough to realize it's the quintessential "I figured it out or recognized a reuse of this motif" face
I’ve always maintained this was a Top 10 Video Game OST. There are more iconic songs from other games sure, but as a “Complete OST”, a collection of songs; you can’t actually beat what’s on SA1.
@@zaneheaston8254 That's not how the majority of the fanbase breaks the franchise down. Classic Era (1991-1997), Adventure Era (1998-2009), Meta Era (2010-2021) and the yet unnamed one we're in at now. THAT'S how we break it down.
Excellent video, I didn't see it live but after numerous days I finally saw the whole thing. Very informative and interesting to see a professional break this down.
14:07 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who wants Dan to react to the Pizza Tower OST. I feel like it would be an extremely vibey stream. It's definitely one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.
I loved seeing your reactions and your breakdowns!! Would absolutely love more content exactly like this. Btw your smile is infectious when reacting to the songs! I love it
there's something about how for as versatile as Nobuo Uematsu and many other VG composers are, they are keyboard people, and Jun Senuoue is a GUITAR GUY and you can tell Dan feeling it lol
I listened to these songs since my childhood so I never noticed how weird some of the lyrics are and how they don't rhyme at all. Only when someone else pointed out I was like, "Oh." I'm glad you loved the OST.
Dude i never notice this either! i’m looking back at them now and while some do like “fight” and “frights” from Doesn’t Matter but i never notice until now! Dang that awesome!!
2:41:50 - NYBuddy asked what the chime / twinkle sound is. I believe it’s a Yamaha DX7 electric piano. It has a lot of really bright overtones and sounds very “bell-like.” I’ve noticed it on a lot of stuff like BeeGee’s and Michael McDonald. Apparently, it was really popular in the 80’s.
