There’s something about that final scene at the end showing Amy and Tails in the night sky. It reminds me of the Bad Ending in Sonic 2 for Game Gear when you fail to get all the emeralds.

Madness Ending: Sonic Escaped the Explosion, But Found a Chaos Emerald In labyrinth zone. Everything about the suicide ending plays out normally after that. until sonic runs away from his dead friends again. the chaos emerald wakes knuckles up, this allows knuckles to prevent sonic from taking his own life this time. AVENGED Ending (FanMade By Me): Sonic Finds Another Chaos Emerald On His Escape from the explosion. along with the other one found in labyrinth zone. everything about the Madness ending plays out until knuckles come to eggman's corpse. (Assumed to be killed by sonic). Before Knuckles Leaves scrap brain zone, sonic collects the time stones eggman was keeping in his base. Knuckles runs after sonic, but sonic has already starting using the time stones. He goes back in time before the explosion started. with his 2 chaos emeralds, sonic attempts chaos control, in an attempt to teleport little planet away from mobius. Sonic Successfully teleports him, eggman, and little planet away from mobius, at the cost of all his energy due to teleporting a whole planet without even being in his super form. with no where to run and out of energy. sonic and eggman both die along with little planets explosion. Sonic successfully avenged his friends. But at the cost of his own life.
