@@ScrewStacheSega of America purely thought "we have this studio collecting dust, this is a good chance to use it" and Spencer Nilsen wanted to go in a direction away from what was popular in the US at the time. The interviews with him focusing on his Sonic CD work are very illuminating, but basically the intent was never "lets make something tailored for the US audience" - that has just been conflated over time because it's a logical idea for as to why one would change the OST to begin with.
Part of me wished sega continued making different soundtracks for different regions. Like what would a European soundtrack sound like? Imagine if the Sonic Rush games had this sort of treatment or imagine a Sonic Advance Us soundtrack. Like maybe in those theoretical scenarios you could choose which soundtrack you want
Sonic 3d blast technically doesn't have differences in OST based on the regions but there's two different OSTs for both the genesis and Saturn versions. It's really interesting
14:08 You explained this way better than Alex Yard ever did. He listened to the beginning and stated, and I quote, “This track sounds like it had dinner with the US Boss music, and enjoyed the date a bit too much.” Like WTF? This is a BOP!
For real. Alex didn't even want to mention it's composed as a boss theme because it plays during the boss fight in the Good Future of the US version of the game. There's a reason he lost subs over the SSZ video, and I just don't understand why choose one of the best US tracks to take a dump on when he didn't dis the US QQ Present at all?
@@SonicCDspeedrunArchives Don't forget WWZ. He said the future themes should be swapped despite the fact that the good future theme is supposed to convey the "gizmos operating at maximum efficiency."
@@memelurd7341 he was right that the WWZ GF has absolutely nothing to do with the graphics in the stage. In fact it has way more in common with Present and even lines up with the Speedrun routes for it.
@@memelurd7341 it starts and ends with construction noises. 🚧 There's literally no construction going on in Crazy Toybox. The whole argument for the US OST is it's ambience matching the stages. But definitely not that one. The electric guitar solo far more matches the GF. The Present track far more matches the GF. The GF track belongs in the Past or Present where its ambience matches the stage and action.
I feel like you can do anything was the main reason that the soundtrack was changed because sega of American probably felt that American audiences won’t respond well to you can do anything and so changed it to fit a more American audience and I guess the rest of the soundtrack so that the replacement sonic boom won’t feel an outlier in the soundtrack.

Nevermind I took Good Future Stardust Speedway and had Prince take it to Minneapolis. LMFAO Good Video.
Very neat video really dissecting the US soundtrack in detail, giving me a better appreciation of some of the tracks I didn't think were as a great. These composers made some really unique music for the Sonic series and I'd love to see them return. As for my favorite US tracks, those would be Stardust Speedway Present, Wacky Workbench Bad Future, and the Special Stage theme. Stardust Speedway has such a wonderous and cosmic feeling to it (I honestly think I prefer it over the JP theme when playing). Wacky Workbench Bad Future is such a funky, yet desolate theme, really befitting of a "bad future." And finally, the Special Stage to me is just cool, collected, and focused, kind of like how Sonic looks in the Japanese key art. If you plan on reviewing more Sonic soundtracks, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Saturn soundtrack of Sonic 3D Blast. That game has some of the cleanest compositions I've heard in a video game soundtrack and I *really* prefer it over the Genesis soundtrack.
when i'm playing sonic CD for a bad ending run i always put on the US soundtrack, since i kinda like the US bad future tracks better (except stardust). also Sonic 3 & knuckles soundtrack review does sound cool
My favorite track from the US soundtrack is either: - Wacky Workbench Bad Future (or) - Tidal Tempest Good Future For future soundtrack reviews as it relates to Sonic I’d say 3&K would be a good follow up from CD, and I’m interested in seeing you review Zero Gravity’s soundtrack (I don’t see too many people talk about it). In terms of non Sonic soundtrack reviews I’d say Street Fighter 6 or something from the series.
I’d love to see you talk about the Ristar or Nights into Dreams soundtracks. They’re very much from the same gene pool as the original Sonic CD music, and also absolute flames 🔥🔥🔥
Oh, also, I’m pretty sure Erik Fryman did the guitar for all of the songs (including the acoustic guitar) except for the Collision Chaos and Metallic Madness levels. Sterling, Vega, and peraza all did CC and MM. I may be wrong, but that’s what the Sonic The Hedgehog Boom album says.
I grew up with this soundtrack mostly after playing so much of it on Gems Collection. Since i was a kid and was just messing around rather than exploring the good/bad/past areas of levels there were some banger tracks i never got to hear until checking the in-game soundtest. Oddly enough when i listened to the JP version way later it sounded off to me at first. My favorite track was always present Quartz Quadrant.
All three that worked in Collision Chaos and Metallic Madness were all either Santana members or worked on Santana previously. I think Peraza was the only active Santana member by that point, but Vega and Crew had worked on it in the 80s.
Screw Stache you would probably die of excitement if you learned there's extended versions of almost every track. And most of the extended pieces are really good, especially for the Wacky Workbench futures (Iirc it was for a promotional album called Sonic Boom, and it appears to have been cut for space, also has extended cd quality covers of some of Sonic Spinball's music)
I've only just found this - thanks for putting it out! I love both soundtracks but the US one deserves more love than it gets. I quite liked Collision Chaos Present, I thought it fit well with a level that looked like a derelict theme park.
I like having two soundtracks, I go by the US sountrack when I want to go for the time stones, basically play present and future stages. And the japanese soundtrack for exploring all versions of the levels, look for the robot generators and try to beat all the levels in the good future.
Collision Chaos actually fits for us present better because it actually sounds like a cyberpunk mesa with ion clouds during sunset. It is technically a desert stage most likely. It's so good and plus the jp would fit more if there were actually people or something by that area lol Tidal tempest actual has a depressing part using synth pad or something and it's so beautiful. Especially in the sonic the hedgehog boom playlist version Quarts quadrant actually doesn't have enough vocals on present, the sonic the hedgehog boom playlist fixed it and made it to perfection. It's beautiful and you should listen to the sonic the hedgehog boom playlist as it's the complete version of the us soundtrack and adds to it sometimes. Anyway it adds the beautiful feel of being outdoors looking at the blue sky while passing by the waterfalls Wacky workbench she's actually saying sh*t on the present version Btw for the jp there is sonic remix album 1994 you should listen to that one
Fun fact: For the Quartz Quadrant, Nilsen went for rock apparently he was inspired by the conveyor belts. What sets the US so different, compared to the JP version? Possibly because they went for a completely different direction. Rather than going for mass sampling, they went for a more original sound. Most tunes wouldn't sound out of place in Sonic Adventure and other modern games, so I'd say they were ahead of their time. JP fits the game. US fits the story.
Neither CD soundtrack really sound like other Sonic games, not even the Saturn ones. I guess X-treme's leaked soundtrack has similar vibes to the US version, but it's still pretty different in terms of composition.
I get what you say with the colors of the mu5. Stardust Speedway in general sounds purple/magenta to me, with yellow for present and red for bad future, and good future sounds cyan. (Also, japanese version sounds yellow)
Ah, my favorite. Its a shame most people dismiss it. I wish I could pick and choose which version of what track plays for each level, though I would have problems picking tracks for Quartz Quadrant, they're both on par for that zone... except the B mix, US all the way on that one.
Yo can you do a review on the new tracks of Sonic 3 & knuckles I still play the old Sonic 3 & knuckles but I don't know anything about the new tracks that they did for them
Metallic madness good future is without a doubt my favorite song in the soundtrack. It makes you convinced that you accomplished your goal with the harmony between the bongos and the music, but it also feels imposing because you aren’t completely finished yet.
I always preferred the US soundtrack when I was younger due to familiarity and nostalgia since my first (and only, for the longest time) experiences with Sonic CD were on Sonic Gems Collection on the Gamecube. I played Sonic CD in Origins for the first time a week ago and decided to use the JP/EU soundtrack, and... Yeah, while I enjoy the US soundtrack, JP/EU has it beat by a country mile. It's probably my favorite classic Sonic soundtrack.
US Sonic CD OST is so underrated. It vibes and grooves in its own way, and for the most part, the music matches the atmosphere of the levels. My favorite tracks have to be Stardust Speedway Good Future or Metallic Madness Bad Future.
Between the 2 I'm still sticking with the JP soundtrack. The NJS and House music make that sound track a vibing party. But, the US soundtrack I prefer Wacky Workbench Present and BF and Stardust present and GF over the JP soundtrack. I wish you could've mixed and matched sound tracks between the US and JP versions in later re-releases of Sonic CD.
Some of my favorites have to be Plamtree panic bad future: It's so darn chill ngl Plamtree panic present: I don't like as much but still a vibe Palmtree panic good future: This fr be hitting like a damn truck Plamtree panic past: My favorite past theme ngl Collision chaos persent: It feels so... How do i put it... Other worldly.. Love this one too much Collision chaos good future: It's just a nicer persent mix Quarts quartern persent: UNDERRATED AF like people fr shiting on this? SHIT'S FIRE quarts quartern good future: Opening is fantastic Quarts quartern bad future: Opening is equally fantastic plus it's less happy which fits Tidal tempest bad future: My favorite in the ost it's such a MOOD Tidal tempest good future: It's catchy af Wacky workbench bad future: While yes i absolutely think the jpn ost DESTROYS the usa in this song (the only zone it does imo) the guitar solo here is sooo good Stardust speedway persent: So relaxing Stardust speedway bad future: Honestly it's better then the jpn imo which was already the best of that ost... So fire no shit it has fuck alot of remixes... Wish it had more tho ngl.. Like to this day I'm still emotionally hurt of how it didn't get a remix in mania Stardust speedway good future: Cool song Metallic madness: Originally i hated this... Now i adore it to death even more the jpn version... There's nothing i don't like here Metallic madness bad future: Same shit but it's even better Metallic madness good future: I actually love this... The bangos are so hard Outro theme: The Supreme sonic boom so nice and calm almost as if "W sonic you did it" Special stage: No where near as good as the jpn one but still a very nice one And lastly Final boss: Just a better version of the normal boss
B... B-BUT... MUH BOSS AND GAME OVER THEMES! ITS SCARY AND MAKES ME POO POOP MY BABY DIAPERS TO THIS DAY, THE AMERICA OST SOUNDTRACK IS BAD!!!!!! JAPANESE IS KINO TOOT TOOT WORK THAT SUCKER 2 DEATH SONIC IS DEAD AND HIS CORPSE IS MINE Lovely video, anybody who doesn't completely shit on the American soundtrack is a friend to me. I agree with pretty much all your takes on the songs you covered, though I really wished you took a more complete look at the soundtrack. I know there's not much to say about the Invincibility or Power Sneakers themes, but a little segment dedicated to them wouldn't hurt. And I know you hate yourself for not covering the Special Stage song here, so I won't even mention it. :V I do minorly (does that word exist?) disagree with your thoughts on the MM BF track, though. I know most people tend to interpret it as an encouraging song, about how Sonic can still beat Robotnik and everything, but I never got encouraging or motivating vibes from it. That track always made me think of Metallic Madness crumbling with Sonic still inside, with machinery collapsing and exploding right next to him as he tries to find a way out like a rat in a maze.
FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO GETS IT! The US soundtrack is a vibe, and I'm tired of pretending it's not. Especially the Metallic Madness Bad Future take, doesn't sound hopeful at all.
I like both for different reasons. But I also like the US soundtrack for being more supplemental to the environs rather than defining it. I think most people get the wrong first impression from Palmtree Panic, as it is probably the weakest US track IMO. Not bad, but I can understand finding it underwhelming. But like the rest of the US soundtrack is actually just as creative as the JP one. And JP has a few stinkers too, mainly the Good Future tracks being not nearly as great as their Present or Bad Future counterparts. I also jive with the fact that the past music is the JP music. It's different in an unintentionally clever way. I get that it was hard programmed, and they didn't have enough time to rewrite that. But I think it works.
Despite showing more admiration for the JP/EU soundtrack, I definitely prefer Sonic Boom over You can do anything, not to mention the fact that it’s longer in comparison to its Japanese counterpart. Plus, that intro had me rolling 😂, I like your sense of humour dude lol
great review bro, I preferer the Japanese soundtrack to be honest but the us one is pretty good, btw I have a suggestion, you should do a review of the pizza tower soundtrack next.
Honestly nothing needed changing.. but if all yhet changed were the intro/ending/invincibility and title screen then that would have been fine surely. The other levels are a yawn fest and SOOO forgettable imo! Its like elevator music.. and i did try to like it! Edit: You nailed it when you said most of this would fit a metroid game.. Edit 2: Wacky Workbench and Stardust Speedway I both liked but again not as Sonic music as they were intended xD
See, I prefer the JP/EU soundtrack, but the US soundtrack has a lot of banger tracks! However, I personally feel that a few of the tracks don't quite hit their mark. They come really close, don't get me wrong, but they don't quite hit. Again, that's just my personal opinion and feel. Otherwise, the US Soundtrack is definitely not a soundtrack to sleep on
Tbh I think a bad future theme should tell you that you screwed up. Not actually reward you or say you have a chance. Meanwhile a good future theme should be the opposite of the Us version. Telling you "good job!" Or "congratulations!". Not be underwhelming or torturing you. For metallic madness US. I think it would have worked earlier in pieces like wacky workbench or quartz quadrant. I think wacky workbench US bad future does not fit for a factory in Disarray. To me it sounds like everyone is in denial. Ik denial is bad but we're playing as sonic. Not a random civilian. For best US good future, NGL I love collision chaos because the OP part sounds like you came outside after a huge storm and you survived a disaster, for best US bad future theme. I'll admit that collision chaos has great future themes.
Idk care what anyone says Stardust Speedway, Wacky Workbench, Palmtree Panic, and Tidal tempest easily solo the JP versions. SS GF is peak sonic cd as far as i'm aware
I think the Sonic CD US soundtrack would be better if it sounded like Sonic music. I like Stardust Speedway Bad Future because it kinda reminds me of those 80s new wave songs, IT JUST DOESN’T FIT SONIC AT ALL. Especially the boss theme because it sounds FAR TOO INTIMIDATING for a Sonic level.
I do like some of the US soundtracks like Tital Tempest, Sonic Boom and Speed up there are more I enjoy and I think both versions work in they're own way it doesn't matter which version you play the soundtrack is good in both versions and it doesn't matter because as long as they enjoy the game why be picky about a soundtrack?
Nope. The exact opposite happened. Palmtree Panic Good/Bad Future and Quartz Quadrant Good/Bad Future were merged in the Sonic the Hedgehog Boom album.
@@BT_Official2011 This doesn't make much sense. Nothing indicates that they were always meant to be two-in-one tracks. It would make much more sense that they got merged for the Sonic Boom album release, because they had to include a few extra arrangements of some Sonic Spinball tracks (and CDs have the capacity of only 700MB).
