Sonic Colors (2010) is a grand space adventure starring Sonic and Tails who set out into space to investigate Dr. Eggman's new creation: the “Dr. Eggman’s Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park.” Eggman claims to have turned over a new leaf and has constructed a theme park as a way to make up for his past transgressions. However, Sonic is suspicious of Eggman’s change of heart and after some investigating learns that Eggman has enslaved an alien race known as Wisps to power the theme park and plans to steal their energy in order to take over the world! You, as Sonic, use the powers of the Wisps to shut down the park and save Earth.
“Theme of Sonic Colors” features the game’s important melodies and relies on the brass heavily to convey Sonic’s superhero nature. The music begins with the strings and woodwinds taking you on a swirling, intergalactic escalator ride from Earth into the cosmos, and the French Horn introduces the main theme of the game with a grand solo. Soon the full orchestra enters and the music guides you through the beautiful theme park Eggman has created. Percussive rhythms drive this piece forward, reminiscent of Gustav Holst’s work in his own space themed orchestral suite, “The Planets.” Suddenly Sonic discovers Eggman’s secret plans and a fight breaks out between the two! Sonic is victorious, and the choir enters to sing Sonic's praises.
After a return to the game’s main theme once more, the music slows as we take a stroll through Planet Wisp, acknowledging the beauty of the planet and creatures Eggman seeks to enslave. This section features the choir and many woodwind and brass counterpoint solos. The music swells once more to reiterate the melody of Reach for the Stars and we come to the grand reprise of the main theme: “Reach for the Stars” by Cash Cash. The choir enters and begins to sing lyrics: “Reach for the Stars / Although they look pretty far / I’m going to find my own way / Take a chance on today.” The piece swells in a final crescendo and ends on a bright, majestic major chord.
