"Sonic Mania wasn't about nostalgia" its literal first trailer talked about "going back to the start". it was made for Sonic's 25th anniversary. it had many references to old games (from obscure games like Sonic the Fighters and more known games like Sonic 3) and like, only 1 or 2 to the modern games (and even then, they were from the 2d ones like the advance series). you yourself said it was about REINVENTING the classic games. it catered specifically for those who loved the classic games. i disagree with many things on this video, but you don't have to take me seriously anyways my pfp is a dead giveaway

While I agree with most of the video, how is Sonic 3 a step back from Sonic CD, but you go on to praise Sonic Mania? Sonic Mania shares so many qualities with Sonic 3 & Knuckles over Sonic CD. Also, you claimed that Sonic Forces sold only 100,000 copies? Where are your sources? A quick search will show that the true number (at least for first week sales) was closer to 234,000. While it's embarrassingly low, just exaggerating isn't helping you sound any more credible.

Man, i kinda feel bad for being a sonic fan. All of the shit the fandom and sega themself brought him through..

This was in my reccomended videos for a long time. I finally watched it, and hey guess what it's exactly what I expected. My comment will be very long and pissy so be warned. You gloss over every game you talk about, oversimplifying your view of them. For example, Sonic 3. You treated that game with such little respect that it honestly made me upset. Your entire analysis was 7 words: "More roadblocks, water levels, iffy level design." Let's neglect to mention the unique yet balanced characters, the much improved special stages, the shields that give Sonic an extra ability, the less dickish hazard placement. Or even the faults, like how some levels drag way too long and can feel repetitive, the midbosses being filler most of the time, I could go on. My point is that you didn't try. The old Sonic games were built with an arcade mindset. There was no time attack because as you said, the expectation was that players would replay *all* the levels over and over to get better at them. This sort of design is seen as outdated nowadays but you have to consider the time period (1991-1992). Besides, Sonic CD and 3 added a save function due to their potential length. I also feel that you need to look past the "speed" part and try to find other merits, like the many secrets and alternate paths hidden in the levels, rewarding both exploration and good gameplay. You failed to mention Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog, both of which I think would've contributed to your overall point. They are mainline games, especially Shadow. Sonic R is not as bad as everyone says it is, but I think the issue with calling it the "best" Sonic game is that it lacks substance to make it last. You can easily 100% the game in under an hour, and there's only 5 tracks. Sure there's a time attack, but you'll eventually get sick of just going fast. I like finding the secrets in the Grand Prix, but the speed at which you can get them all ultimately harms the game, as the racing by itself becomes a shallow experience. And good lord, cut down on the smug snark. Everybody does it, it's super obnoxious and the reason why I avoided this video for so long. I knew it would be in there. You've probably heard this from several other people, but this felt really half-assed and not much of an analysis, a review, or even really a look at these games. My whining is done now.

I totally thought everyone was gonna hate the sonic movie but the completely unexpected happened. The creators listened to fan criticism and the movie came out actually good.

I love it when people who never really "got" classic Sonic try to analyze it in depth. Not everything has to be for everyone, so just as many people out there will likely never enjoy playing one of my personal GOAT (Dark Souls, a game which reeeealy isn't for everyone), or how I never really "got" Mario myself and think it's way too overrated, many people never enjoyed and never will enjoy classic Sonic, it's just not for you, but it doesn't meant "it was never good", you just never liked it, and that's fine.

Haha yeah “sonic bad Mario good sonic has had a rough time over the years yadda yadda” we’ve already done this song and dance a million times. Half of the people still beating the sonic fan base and sonic himself don’t even care about his games or what happens, they just like to shit on sonic because it makes them feel good. I know sonic isn’t a perfect franchise but seriously c’mon these videos are all the same and have the same points it’s getting annoying, but I guess my point is devalued because I’m a “sonic fan” and the vocal minority of this fan base gets to speak for millions of regular people.

I honestly still love the games and look back on them fondly, even ones most people didn't like like Sonic Unleashed or Heroes, part rose tinted nostalgia, part that banging soundtrack, but i think it's best if Sega left him alone now, bring him back for crossovers, smash bros and games solely built on nostalgia value like Generations and that's really all you can do it, it's just painfully obvious that staff at Sonic Team either do not know how to write a non-cringe-worthy story as is the case with Sonic 06, Forces and Shadow The Hedgehog or they simply don't know how to design a truly great game from a gameplay standpoint as is with Sonic Unleashed's werehog segments or the absolutely atrocious anti-fast level design in Sonic CD (even though i still love both), there hasn't been a sonic game for a long time that doesn't fail in some aspect, even Mania is just well, regurgitating same ideas and concepts from the past. Sonic Unleashed had a good story though it's got those cute asf cutscenes and no OCs except the werehog i guess, and the boost gameplay is the best fight me

I researched into the sales numbers for forces and mania, and mania sold over 1 million in less than a year, meanwhile forces sold around 14 million. Soooo..... those numbers were wrong. At the very least forces sold over 200 thousand in its first week. So the sales numbers you said were completely wrong.. but I will say that as a sonic fan, I am disappointed in sonic team. I think he has a lot of great games, but all of his bad ones are horrendous. I wish he would come back in absolute glory, but the movie has crushed my dreams of that happening in the next few years. Not to mention the fact that there are a lot of sammyclassicsonicfan’s out there. As a fan of the series I am disgusted in the fans that screech any time a single sonic game is criticized for the smallest thing. It sickens me. But at least there are some sane fans out there. Those fans are the ones who will allow the series to live on.

You are wrong. The Sonic franchise is not dead. If sonic was a mediocre mascot do you really think that it would still be around past 2006? People still care about it, and no, they are not all insane. The fact that despite so many people having given up on the franchise that there are still people who care and have not given up is inspiring. Id like to see any other franchise survive what this franchise has, and still keep going with people who still want to see it succeed. Sonic is not dead.

This is the first video of yours that I didn't like. Sonic was a cherished part of my childhood. I always thought the Sonic games were fast and fluid. I suppose YMMV.

Pretty much everything you said before 3D games felt... very innaccurate for someone as a long term fan. No, you dont have to go fast in the levels to have fun, and thats not the main point, its still a platforming game over all. Neglecting to mention the momentum based movement feels rather... ignorant, instead saying that you have to play the games over and over to get the "full experience"(going fast)... never met a classic sonic fan who felt that way. Also... sonic CD kinda blows dude. Like, I don't know how anyone in the whole world could possible say Sonic 3 is worse than Sonic CD. Sonic CD was riddled with errors, and to someone halfway decent at sonic it feels very uninspired and easy to beat in one playthrough, it's the only classic sonic game that never has me coming back to play it again. Everyone has their own opinions which is fine but it's obvious that when youre judging classic sonic, your judging it from a place of someone who just doesnt really appreciate the gameplay and you kind of ignored everything that makes these games timeless classics to those who actually do like the game. Also, to say Super mario bros is more accessible and easier to new gamers because "the camera is closer".... yea, never heard that one either, and it's really just wrong. Growing up as a child I always gravitated towards sonic than super mario 1, 3, or world because they literally are easier. All you need is one ring not do die, mario games are much more unforgiving and you are more likely to lose a life for making a very small mis input. Everyone I know in my age group agrees that at the end of the day, the early sonic games arent really that difficult, except for maybe sonic 3 & K. Everything you said about 3D sonic is fair and accurate, but I feel like as a fan I just saw a lot of ignorance coming through on the discussion of the classic games and I feel like most people would agree with me.... the main purpose was to be a good platformer with solid momentum based physics which hadnt been done yet. The marketing about him going fast was simply that, marketing the genesis' superior processing power to the super nintendo, but it's absurd to imply you have to go fast in classic sonic games to have fun, they're designed as platforming games first and foremost and the ability to go fast IF YOURE GOOD was marketed on bc the Super Nintendo literally couldnt move that fast.

Where I have to agree that yes mania is a return to form I think the unneeded call out to the trilogy Well unneeded. Sonic Mania if anything has levels more akin to a mix of 3 and 2 and nothing near the level's of openness and spaciousness CD's levels has. As an example, CD's stages are supposed to be explorable so you can find the right sign post to get to the past and destroy the roboticizer. Now go try and get all the special stage rings in act 1 if Chemical plant in mania in the same run. It's absurdly difficult due to not being able to explore levels as freely as CD. Most of mania are points of tricky platforming followed by moments where you essentially let the game play itself by the rush of dopamine that is the rewarding speed section. This is coming from a fan who's favorite classic sonic game (or videogame in general) is Sonic 3 & K and my least favorite sonic game is Sonic 2. TL;DR: Sonic Mania's level designed comes no where near close to the level design in Sonic CD just due to core aspects of how a level is made is completely different for each game.

While I do generally agree or can understand most points in this video; you are vastly overselling mario 1. It might have been revolutionary at the time, but it has awkward hit boxes, slippery controls and repetitive level and boss design. Mario 3 would have been a better comparison as it’s a more refined experience that came out around the same time as sonic 1

I really liked the Sonic movies and how they portrayed the character. That being said I always thought the whole Nintendo VS Sega, Mario VS Sonic thing was quite overblown and pretty much manufactured by ads. In reality Nintendo was almost 100% of the time very ahead of Sega and Sonic games were never really at the same level of quality of Mario games. I can use my own country as sort of proof. Here in Iran no one was airing ads about how cool Sonic was or How great Nintendo was. The consoles and the games had to speak for themselves. As a result even though Sega Genesis became quite popular, the market was mostly dominated by Nintendo. And Super Mario games were the undisputed kings. No one was fighting on the school yards defending Sonic because well, it was obvious Mario games were better and we were not being affected by Sega's ad campaign.

I'll agree from 06 onwards, but I think you gotta give the base Genesis some more credit, sure Sonic the Hedgehog was a slog sure but it introduced some crazy cool music ideas the series still holds on to, plus bosses in that game were nutty for the time compared to other side scrolling platformers

The REAL history is that Sonic went from literally the most famous mascot in all of video games at one point, that momentarily even violently threw the mighty Mario from his throne for years, pioneered and pushed forward an entire industry and it's legacy on his spiny back for a good while and singlehandedly inspired a deluge of copycats (which all cultural phenomenons do) to a series with SOME low-points and bad products, making SOME missteps and occasionaly coming back with recoveries which are still going on today. Granted, Sonic does not have ALL of the impact now, that he did then, but when occasionally great games like Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing KEEP coming along and reminding people that Sonic games still CAN be good, he's FAR from, in your inaccurate, bullshit words, a "corpse".
