Remember when they only showed off footage of the first open level section in a breath of the wild style reveal, and no footage of the cool cyberspace or boss fight stuff? Only screenshots in fucking magazines
@Ab This is a take I will never get used to. The 4Kids cast was absolutely despised back in the day. 4Kids as a whole was notorious for hiring untalented nobodies to do their voice work and that definitely applied to Sonic as well. Mike Pollock's Eggman was the only one we all agreed was fine (which is why he was the only actor that wasn't replaced in 2010). As soon as they replaced the 4Kids cast, everybody pretended like they were always great for some reason and I just do not understand it. Even the Dreamcast voices were better if you ask me.
@@GamingintheAM0801 God I love Game Grumps and watch them a ton but that’s one of the main things that annoy me about them with Sonic games or for some reason sometimes they’ll play a certain Sonic game on a console that has either a different version of the game (like in Unleashed) or play what people say is the worst version of a certain game (Heroes on PS2)
Funny enough, the launch trailer that just came out today is easily a million times better than every single piece of promotional material they’ve put out thus far. Like, I actually sat there and went, “Oh. This actually looks really fun. I’m genuinely thinking about getting this now.”
@@superbodoque7860 It was because the fandom and critics we're incredibly stupid with Unleashed when it came out, and now is seen as one of the best Sonic games, same thing that happened with Pokemon B/W
@@zag1797 Judging a game because of its predecessor is plain dumb, and the 2 Wii games that I can think of are Seven Rings and Black Knight, both aren't the greatest game ever but are pretty solid, and at the very least Black Knight was released after Unleashed
@@seanhearn9616 Unleashed exists. Also heroes isn't good like at all. A great game for the first playthrough and then immediately shit when you're forced to play it 3 more times.
Charlie acting like he's gonna get an F rank knowing full well all 10 million possible futures then pretending to be surprised when he gets an S rank just to finally reveal he was the chosen one sent chills down my spine. Definitely my favorite part of the saga.
Reminds me of the meme "When you step up in the room after you done did what you did and you know your homies know you done did what you did so now they know what's up by the way you stepped up in there that you you did what you did what you did. So now you're all the way in the room and they like "bro what you do?" even though they know exactly what you did. But they're gonna play dumb because they find it to be entertaining to ask questions they already know the answer to, and they know you will also have a good time explaining the story, which you do now everyone's attention is on you while- (flip to continue)"
What's crazy is that he really didn't like how Frontiers looked back then. Granted nobody did, but yeah, nice to see that he actually is enjoying himself
It's a big Sonic game, so it's cursed to have _something_ disastrous about it. They cleverly used a marketing botch to keep the curse from ruining the game itself.
I love how this game has had the opposite sonic hype cycle. Usually fans are gleaming and excited for a game when its announced but most of the time that smile slowly fades away and when the game releases a war ensues about its quality that lasts for about 700 centuries or its just plain bad(but sometimes really good). Here people started off intially disliking everything that was shown off about the game but as more and more stuff came out its made a magical arc and now is getting fairly positive reception across the board.
Tbf 1-2 is kinda hard. It gives little leniency for error, which is funny since the levels after this one are actually not as hard. It could be the hardest level in the first island.
Sonic is one of those trial and error games to get better times/grades in the stages. Maybe that’s why Charlie likes it so much. Plus it feels nice that with each time you get better, you feel like sonic zooming through stages
Yeah, that's why i loved doom. I was Sonic fan at some point but then pretty much left as I really didn't like the community but played the games when they got good reception.
The only problem is that only 1-2 is the only one that really pushes you to actually trial and error. I was very surprised how it starts ofs so hard but nothing comes close after (atleast so far).
4:48 "Heard 1-2 is the hardest to S but how would people already know that?" Alpharad is the answer to that question, he got to play an early demo and made a video before it released
@@sevionus80hi, Peter Griffin here, it’s a dark souls reference, in its dlc “the painted world of Ariamis,” the player character touches a painting and is absorbed into the painting to reveal that the painting was a form of portal to another world. Hence the term “ariamised” referencing that event. You may laugh now that you understand the joke
Respect to Charlie for following up his intitial video trashing the game. A lot of people only report on Sonic only when it's negative but I'm happy to see he followed his first video up with a hands-on experience.
A lot of ppl trashed this game, but a lot of them have turned around on it now that they're actually playing it. It goes to show ppl shouldn't rush to conclusions not that I blame anyone.
@@thephilosopher7173 yeah I didn’t blame people. When coming off of the back of forces and a 5 year wait, people were definitely going to react that way if they didn’t see pretty much everything. Forces really scarred the community more than people like to admit. Luckily I wasn’t around for the forces release even though I have been a sonic fan for 16 years. I stopped paying attention to sonic as I went into my GCSE period in 2017 high school and I got into different games. I only played forces this year and I didn’t know that the game was bad until around 2019 when I stumbled across it and I was like “oh shit sonic forces, I wonder if the game was good”
A big reason is because the game acknowledges the flaws of past games, and also acknowledges the good parts of past games, this game connects every single other game learning both what it did right and what it did wrong, Eggman talks about the shadow game, team Sonic racing, forces, Knuckles talks about heroes, several characters talk about events from SA1 and SA2 and brings more relevancy from them, it expands the lore on so many things and does it well, and the characters are written exactly how they should be
Warms my heart to see Charlie having fun, seen so many negative reviews on this. Looks like it's not only a huge step in the right direction but the first step in years lol.
Ian Flynn really needs to write for more Sonic games in the future, he's really good at keeping true to their personalities! 🥰 this definitely tops Forces for sure... and not to mention, the OST is a certified banger! 🤟 the voice actors also did an amazing job, it was really off putting hearing Sonic and Amy with deep voices, but I guess we'll get used to it! honestly, Frontiers is one of the BEST 3D modern Sonic game ever! though, it could use a bit of polishing... Sonic's jumping feels a bit too stiff moving around with, and it's really distracting seeing tiny islands pop up from the distance... really hope Sega fixes these! other than that, the game is a masterpiece! 💕
The only thing I'm asking to be added rn is Sonic making little noises as you're zooming like "Yeah!" "Let's go!" "C'mon!" idk it feels weird watching this and having him silent. Other than that this looks so sick.
@Kian I can vouch be makes some effects but they're mostly deeper then his talking voice. But yeah he mostly just make noises no dialogue unfortunately.
i love the way Charlie just spam the boost on Cyberspace levels but he still make it work, in the previous games that's a death sentence for your run of the stage lol
People been asking for a open world collectathon style game with 3D Sonic for years and behold when Sonic Team actually listens and tries it, it gets positive feedback.
This chase for S Rank Rank happened with Alpharad too. I think the fact that people like Alpha and Charlie getting into the controls and trying hard to get S Rank while having a good time says more about the fun factor and worth of a game than any review or dissection could.
Looking at him dominating and getting S rank for every level at once, this man looks like he will be the 1st person to achieve 100% completion with his crazy skills. And if he ever post Part 2, we are absolutely hyped up for it.
Not really, Secret Rings had it, Black Knight had it, Unleashed had it, I don't remember about Generations and idk if Heroes counts since it wasn't a permanent upgrade,
The last time I remember leveling up in a main sonic game was in Sonic Heroes where a "level up" was just extra power being added to your attacks for the duration of the zone/life.
All I want is the entire Chao system remade. I ran so many levels over and over for so many unicorns as a kid. And of course the inevitable misclick leading to accidental abuse of the poor things by chucking them at a wall and subsequently making them evil lol
Ok, I like they did levels like the Adventures games. Looks way better then the early content release awhile back. I do have an issue with the invisible walls in a lot of areas. I'm sure a couple patches will fix it right up and make it smooth once the community exploits them more.
It definitely looks janky in a lot of ways, but Frontiers, at least from this video, actually looks like it’s trying to bring new things to the Sonic table like Colors and, to some extent, Heroes did, and despite the jank it actually seems kind of fun to play from a spectator’s standpoint. Sage looks surprisingly good for a humanoid character in a Sonic game (other than Eggman of course), and I’d be lying if I said potential Chaos lore didn’t tickle my fancy since he’s one of my favorite Sonic antagonists design wise.
@@brainthebrian3690 playing the game normally IS doing some of the extra content. Pretty sure breath of the wild is the same way, you can beat that game extremely quickly if you skip through all that but most people dont do that
Ah yes, I too spent an absurd amount of time grinding for the S rank on 1-2 lmao. Really fun level though, and the controls are super nice in this game. Looking forward to playing more, which is such a breath of fresh air.
How have sonic games not ventured into the "speedrunning" genre already? Feels like a good new direction edit: Since people are confused I mean speedrunning as an intended game-mode like in this game, not that people don't speedrun normal sonic games.
They have though. Not only do people speedrun them, a lot of the games have a time attack mode which has you beat the level at the fastest time or the S rank which you need to beat the level quick in order to even get it.
That was literally the whole point of Sonic games from the first game. The inspiration was playing level 1-1 in Mario Bros. as fast as possible so they could get to the warp zone. They wanted a game where you could essentially skip levels just by learning to play them quickly.
this game had a horrible start to its marketing, thankfully it all worked out in the end though. Beat the game on Ryujinx, currently replaying on PC going for the 100%. (Just finished the 2nd island) It really surpassed my expectations.
Seeing sonic frontier, as someone who hasnt been able to play it cause time constraints, having such positive rewiews from fans and super fans alike, is a joy ive been waiting on since I was a kid.
This literally makes me think that the new sonic marketing strategy is to make the product look as bad as possible then have the release be really good. Worked for the sonic movie and this too...
it’s only good because the developers saw how horrified we were with how the game was going to be (i know it still wasn’t finished but it seemed like they had something way more boring in mind)
Alpharad had the opportunity to play it early and made a video about it before it got released, and the biggest part of that video was him trying to S rank 1-2, and that among the developers there they knew it was extra hard.
@@mr.azizsshitposts it was pretty great! The open world is pretty similar, the main change is the enemy mechanic. In my version, we had to circle around enemies and if it was in the circle it took damage. It was pretty mid so The current fighting mechanic is an improvement. The cyber world is similar, there was a cyber world thing they had when I played that was helllllla trippy. It was like a combination of all the cyber worlds into one, i played it poorly lol. The main change i see is with the general progression. When I played, the open world was a lot more fun to explore and discover the story to. It was less linear for the story, and i enjoyed it more. I was like piecing together this mystery based off many facts I learned in a different order. Granted, it took longer to figure out basic shit, but I enjoyed it :)
@@heyoimjax Do you remember anything specific about the story progression? The tail end of the game, some lines from Sonic during the beginning of the final boss that don't add up to the rest of the story, and some unused files suggest story and progression was changed heavily late in development.
that first level man, actually reminded me of good old sonic games, the movement looked fluid and it looked like sonic actually had some fuckin speed to him. damn that felt good to watch
I'm enjoying this game so much, I'm going to fully compelte every island before progressing, I've done everything in the first island besides getting all the memory hearts and I enjoyed every second of it, the side stuff is actually fun
As a Sonic fan since his debut on the Genesis Seeing Charlie play through boost formula levels is hilarious. His timing is so spot on in the souls games where you need genuinely quicker reaction time but here in the cyberspace levels he's missing crucial jumps. Though he did improve drastically.
It’s… decent. That’s all I can really say. Honestly, it feels like Forces, but a lot more creative, which I do like! And the characters are… better. Still not great, but definitely better. Overall, I hope that this means Sega is going to be a little bit more gracious to their mascot.
Fun fact: Sonic's va here is Roger craig smith, who voiced Ezio in assassins creed, Krane in dying light, and sonic from sonic boom and the sonic boom tv show!
Gameranx didn't seem to do this game justice with their "Before You Buy" segment. You actually showed some fun looking mechanics and actual speed of the game. They just showed a few green open world bits with some rails in it that go nowhere. Game does seem to have a bit more to it than that.
I’m actually really looking forward to this game, definitely gotta pick it up. Sure it has some flaws, but overall it looks like the devs put way more effort and passion than forces
