Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon features new Cyberspace levels are completely original, and I can tell because they suck. Seriously though, maybe I have more of an issue with how Sonic controls than the level itself.

A lot of people have been checking this out 👀 I'll be streaming Wednesday (Might be Sonic, most likely chilling with Dave the Diver) at 6pm Central if you want to talk about this game and other things there. I've been reading and replying to almost everyone here, and I think it's healthy to have civilized arguments. Being able to handle having your own thoughts and opinions challenged is something everyone should strive for and welcome such. I don't hold it against anyone who likes the game. I said it myself, I'm quite an Adventure style purist, and maybe when I'm streaming I'll have my thoughts completely organized to break down what I like and don't like about Frontiers. The finale should be out Thursday. Thanks for watching

@@DannySuperNoob you should also try doing this cyberspace challenge where you have to speed run all of them in one run to make a super fast run, you do that and you get to do the full ring max speed boost in cyberspace

The new cyberspace stages are built with the spin dash and having the jump deceleration toggle set to 0. They expect you to fly all over the levels and use the spindash on the slopes and ramps. I think for a lot of sonic fans it was easy to understand, but I'm starting to wonder what the hell happens to casuals who have no idea of how these updates were built around sonic fan twitter feedback. I'm trying to imagine what these new cyberspace levels are like on base-pre updates frontiers controls and I dont want to try it for myself because that sounds like straight ass.

Don't think that's a good thing.
@MarkerMurker
@MarkerMurker 9 месяцев назад
Two things: No you don't, and the control scheme is still bad. Huge turning arc mid-jump in a gane that very often requires precision? Come on. Terrible idea and can't be changed. In Sonic GT there's a wide turn arc when jumping too, but that's directly proportional to how fast you're going. In Frontiers, it's just always like that. And "momentum" only being somewhat functional when using the spindash is also a very unpolished thing. Letting go of the spindash button midair messes up jumps and causes a really awkward walking animation midair. Little things like that just pile up and make the experience very rough.
@nerodoesart5886

@Sonicmasterxyz Also, why do the player needs to change the controls if it was good? I think that's also a bad thing.

Controls aren’t really an issue in this game, when you can adjust them in the options menu. My only major gripes with this update are the camera (even the options menu doesn’t help me to fix the camera angle to my liking, like the camera angle feature in the options menu goes from 0-100; what does that even mean?) and that I believe you have to make various adjustments in the options menu a lot, whether that would be during platforming challenges, cylooping challenges, or specific cyberspace stages.
@DannySuperNoob

@MarkerMurker

This popped up in my recommended videos. Sounds like you didn't spend much time with this game beforehand, but I can't blame you. This update assumes you unlocked everything in the previous updates and know how the janky movement works. Really not good. And then they don't explain how to do the final boss until you 100% the island, which means most people either get lucky or get help through the internet. I hear what you said about Sonic GT, *but* I have to say it works really well to have the areas so wide because it's a very smooth experience at high speeds. And a dream for routing. The best Adventure-styled fan level I've ever played is Hill Top in Sonic GT. The flow is just so good. You said you played Omens, what are your thoughts on the level design there? You also mentioned Spark, which one did you play? I'd have to assume 3 because you were talking about the combat. I feel like that combat was fantastic because of the depth and polish it has. The mixups and juggles you can do are amazing. I think it fits with the overall style of the game too because it's all about being stylish, whether making your own route through a level or making enemies your b*tch. You can be zippy during combat too, it just takes a little imagination. And not the way Frontiers does it, by exploiting jank. I suppose none if this matters if you're not quite a fan of character action games
@DannySuperNoob
@DannySuperNoob 9 месяцев назад
I feel like I'd have to make a whole video devoted to how I specifically think a Sonic Game should play lol. I have way too many thoughts about it after playing the more recent Sonic Games, Sonic-likes such as the Spark Trilogy, and the Fangame Omens. I haven't Played Gt, I've just seen gameplay of it and that was my takeaway from the level design. As for Omens, I think its level design is decent, except for that really bad tree level. In my ideal Sonic game I would want Sonic's moveset to blend well with the level and vice versa. I think something that I wasn't sure if I liked about some Sonic fangames is how floaty the characters can get, to the point where with enough momentum you could circumvent entire sections of a level. I don't want the player to do something like that so easily, because I want them to engage with the level. It's understandable to have a speed-based platformer be focused on moving through a level as fast as possible but it seems like a waste of effort to have a level with all this architecture that players will fly over 80% of. Spark 2 & 3 are a bit better about this. Without the magnet dash glitch Spark/Fark have to actually navigate the level while still having a fast pace. However both games feature a combat system where you have to stop and fight an enemy. Of course Spark 3 has a much more advanced combat system that would make any beat-em-up fan happy, I would hot take and tell you that Spark 1 might have had the best combat in conjunction to the rest of the game being a speed-based platformer. There's a gimmick in Spark 1 where if you hit and kill enemies in succession you can fill up a gauge that can unleash a devastating attack. Getting hit causes you to lose all of it. It made bosses interesting because if you were able to dodge perfectly while getting your hits in you could hit the enemy with a special attack more often ending the fight more quickly. I think Sonic could play with this idea, rather than just fighting enemies, it's fighting them and defeating them as quickly as possible. Like killing enemies to build up a special attack that you can unleash on a group of enemies that would be slower to kill normally. Maybe implementing a combo meter you have to keep up by collecting rings, doing tricks, or killing enemies quickly would encourage such a play style, similar to Pizza Tower. And speaking of points, I'm quite disappointed that Sonic Adventure 2's trick and score system never came back. SA2 probably has the best ranking system of any Sonic game (funny enough, the first game to have a rank system) Most new Sonic Games focus on Speed and Time, or have a practically meaningless scoring system that hands you the S Rank like Forces. SA2's gameplay is about moving fast and looking cool doing it. The opportunity to score points for tricks and enemy chains adds another layer to routing aside from finding the fastest time (however SA2 had more linear levels compared to SA1). It's a shame they never went any farther with this. I might have a lot more to say but I do want to play Sonic Adventure 2 on the channel, maybe for a stream sometime. I could definitely talk about this more then.

19:14 As much as I want to refrain from mentioning that game in this context, but wouldn't the best way to defeat enemies in a simple manner is to just allow you to ram into them with high enough speeds like Peppino does in Pizza Tower? It's basically what Sonic already does with homing attacks and such but without being forced to slow down for a fight
@DannySuperNoob
@DannySuperNoob 11 месяцев назад
You were able to do that in other Boost-type Sonic games. In fact this is the first Boost game where boosting into enemies doesn't kill them. I think Project 06 has a pretty smooth combat & platforming back-and-forth. I think Sonic may need a combat system that is simple in control but takes a bit of skill to use optimally.

You can't even boost into enemies like your supposed to and you can only air boost once when in the air until you hit the ground, which kills the flow unlike in previous boost games. @@Prime_Legend Even though he controls ok in the open world, there still is all the jank in the combat and collision. Like how Sonic can sometimes just go flying just because he touched a tiny little bump or rock. All the stuff they added in the updates is neat, but most of it breaks the game even more. The game was not designed with the momentum, spindash and other characters in mind so you can just skip all the platforming and get the collectibles. The game is so unbalanced now. Plus, they butchered Knuckles's glide. It controls awful compared to Adventure 1 and 2. And the pop in is ugly. Especially for a 60 dollar game made in 2022, while Unleashed had none of that.
