One of the things I really thought was cool in some of the recent footage from TGS, is when Sonic parries, he kind of does the Witch Time thing from Bayonetta where time slows down and you can just wail on the enemy. I love that.
As someone who only has passing knowledge of sonic at best, my two biggest questions about this game where how combat and traversing the open world where going to feel in relation to sonic's speed. Good to hear that they seem to have found a nice melding of the speed with the combat as aposed to them interfering with each other
As good as it looks, I kinda wish it was used alongside the platforming a bit too. Right now it's just seems divorced from everything else in the game. I guess to its credit though, some of the enemies themselves look like mini platforming challenges in a way like how drawing cyloops around certain enemies tends to be a game of dodging whatever they throw at you while navigating the environment.
Great video dude. Long comment incoming. The soldier enemies worry me. They seem to only take one hit to kill. Whether it's one punch or one homing attack. And those are the standard enemies. As a dmc fan, its gonna be annoying trying to style on enemies and get my combo number up when they just die on the first hit. Also I agree with special moves. They look cool but that's about it. They're just quick cutscenes. Again me mentioning dmc. But in dmc, specials arent quick scenes, they're just part of the gameplay. Theres really no need for them to take that camera angle they do in frontiers. It's kinda jarring. Game definitely looks fun. But I feel my love for dmc is gonna screw me over. And it'll be my own fault lol.
@@Voltricity435 hopefully. I mean I know theres a hard mode too. So that should help. But like I said, being spoiled by dmc and other beat em ups has given me warped expectations.
Solid video to stumble across. If there was anything I'd mention, it's that I think there's some variation in where to apply the special moves; the flurry of projectiles from his feet looks useful for crowds of smaller enemies or the bubble thing that requires several hits, while something like the loop kick or stomp attack seems better for single enemies with large health bars. But I could be completely wrong.
You know what Sonic Frontiers combat is reminding me of after seeing all the recent footage... Transformers Devastation and that is absolutely a good thing. I love Transformers Devastation so much. It might not have Bayonetta or DMC combo depth but the enemy encounters and flow of the combat is so satisfying.
i think having diferent ways of beating each enemie can be amazing, because the main problem with sonic unleashed is that i could just combo spam every single enemie, i think that forcing the player to think twice before engaging combat is really interesting.
as someone who owned a wii sonic and the black knight was my favorite game awesome level design, awesome combat great platforming the works. sorry if the combat wasn't the best for ya but i liked it. now for sonic frontiers combat... i think it looks amazing! cause i don't know about you. but i love picking fights in video games! so i would spend most of my time fighting lowly enemies, taking titans, guardians i'd be clearing out the whole damn map! but if i had to rate the combat on it's own it's a solid 6/10 for what it's worth. what i would've done with the combat is switch out sonic's homing attack. and have him lock on to an enemy have him rush throw some punches. and be bale to dash back out. or something like that. now this isn't to say i don't like the combat. but it would've been interesting to go that route. unless you have any other ideas on sonic combat should play. for me the combat is above serviceable and i'm happy it looks above decent.
Sonic and the Black Knight honestly would have been so much better without the motion controls. And I'm willing to actually retry the game soon because I like the presentation a lot.
@@ChaserTech i get that alot 1 question though. were you playing with or without motion plus? cause playing it without motion plus drops that game from 9/10 to a 5/10 real quick
@@blackwaterodysee Was it actually possible to play with Motion Plus controls? I have a motion plus controller yet I didn't notice any difference when I was swinging the nunchuck.
@@ChaserTech well i played that game without motion plus, it sucked ass swinging the sword with the wii remote. but when used my built in motion plus controller (i had to buy another built in motion plus controller) it made the game actually enjoyable. and yes it's possible. it's a useful add on that i wish was built into the base wii remote. cause with that playing most wii games are a pain in the ass. the only game i think that didn't need the motion plus was sonic and the secret rings. but... i played that game with a built in motion plus wii remote.
From what I've seen in game controls and gameplay, the X is both the attack and homing attack, and to perform the homing attack you need either an enemy to work or a target. and there's the Y that has the cyloop and the quick cyloop so I thought they could put a kind of "heavy attack" too to make the combat more interesting.
What's your opinion on the traversal? Me personally, it feels very bland since it's not really unique to Sonic. You're just boosting through an open field that anyone could go across with their speed value turned up. I kinda wish the traversal had Classic Physics, abilities and level design in the open world.
If there was more going on in the environments, I wouldn't mind that much. I need to see interesting set pieces in the world for me to enjoy exploration. I honestly don't mind running around normally as long as the areas look good to run in.
Frontiers combat is spamming attack button If enemies don't get stun or knock back they'll attack you when you're make a Combo on them In that case you have to dodge their attacks in any moments because there is no safe time even in the Combo
I might have missed something but jump cancelling doesn't look like something you can do. The footage in question seems to be Sonic homing attacking after a combo and kind of. Struggling to land the hit. Combat still does look a bit janky at least in comparison to other action games but god it still gets me excited anyway because this combat looks way more fun than anything we've gotten before (low bar, I know). I'm interested to see them expand on the speed and movement based combat, either as the game goes on or with the next "open zone" game. For once it feels like they're in a good spot.
The traversal in combat escape look amazing I understand your scepticism with the combat too very very valid I feel like cyberspace is going to be the weakest part of the game but it still looks like
