Fun fact, they actually intended to have this as a feature in regular levels. But for one reason or another, it was cut in development.

It's crazy to think that Classic sonic controls well in 3D and they never put that in a actual game. Just think of the possibilities. And he was intended to be in the game but thanks to developing it was cut, no wonder in 3D glitches he controls good

I've now finally completed Sonic Generations on my Play Station3. But the weird part is that when I get 50 rings it doesn't give me the option to be Super Sonic.

It's probably cause it's an incomplete cut feature. Apparently you were going to be able to use Classic Sonic in the 3d levels but they ended up cutting it from the game. He probably had his own version of a boost.
