People seem to underestimate Vector's intelligence, he's a detective for a reason.

What's even funnier about this strangely I don't even think I've noticed that before until watching back the cutscenes, at least though it showed Vector's shrewdness.

Yeah I’d just assume that Knuckles Chaotix isn’t canon. No one played it, after all.

It's because knuckles chaotix is from the classic timeline, not from the modern timeline.

Actually there’s probably a good explanation for this! While in Japan Eggman has always had that name, in the west Eggman was known as Robotnik. This name difference had been canonized as having Doctor Robotnik be his true name, however starting with Sonic Adventure Sonic started calling him Eggman as a form of mockery (With the evil scientist eventually taking on the name with pride in Sonic Adventure 2). My theory is that since Team Chaotix only ever met Eggman during the events of Knuckles Chaotix (Events that Sonic happened to be absent in), Vector and his crew would have only ever known him as Doctor Robotnik and therefore didn’t initially realize the name Eggman was in reference to the same person.

It's actually really clever too, because it's already been established that Vector suspects that the client is actually Eggman. Vector's purposefully baiting him into exposing himself.
