The only thing that still bugs me is they didn't give us the option to choose between the original Genesis soundtracks and the remastered mobile soundtracks for Sonic 1 and 2. The music was remastered for the mobile releases, and I was hoping for the option so I could set the option to remastered mobile soundtracks.
The Super form thing in Sonic 1 is a carry-over from the mobile version. Basically there's a cheat you can input in the sound test, Sonic 2 style, that adds a seventh special stage and emerald to the game - and with that, the Super forms as well. No Knucles in Sonic CD is a similar story, as CD was the first Retro Engine conversion and inserting Knuckles into the remakes wasn't codified until later.
Not having emulations is annoying and it is a problem, but because I already own the ROMs as well as some very good console versions of at least the first two games, the lack of emulations in Origins is not as big of a deal. My biggest problems with the collection are lack of a CRT/scanline filter and the atrocious save system.
the fact they're not available for new people who no longer have the option to purchase those roms is a problem. Attempts at preservation are important, especially as this is the only option still on the market.
I do understand why asking about the lack of character features, and super Sonic, in Sonic 1 and Sonic CD - but both games were made before they were in the series as a whole, and the levels would likely be broken with these additions without major tweaking. For the same reason Knuckles likely wasnt included in Sonic CD, because level design wasnt made to accommodate him.
Good point. They had the right idea by modifying the levels for knuckles. If they patched the ceiling issues and the Tidal Tempest Act 3 problem, I think it would have been perfect.
Mega Man: Powered Up also had a Classic Mode, but it wasn't the original game/rom but instead Powered Up with the level design and boss weaknesses of the original Mega Man.
They dont even need to change classic mode (rename it 2013 mode or lives mode and add widescreen so its just the 2011/2013 versions) just add a original mode with the og roms
4:40 hey pal, i don't know if this was on purpose, but Ice cap is one of the only three tracks that's almost exact same as the prototype tracks. The other two are the competition menu track and the blue spheres difficulty results track (aka that one unused track that everyone speculates is the prototype Super Sonic theme)
1. The reason there are no Super Forms in CD IS BECAUSE YOU'RE COLLECTING THE *TIME STONES NOT THE CHAOS EMERALDS* 2. I think the reason they are using a modified anniversary mode instead of the Mega Drive roms for "Classic" mode is because modifing the rom of Sonic 3&K to have the new music put in would be too much time and effort for what is just a poorly slapped together collection for new fans who got into the series through the movies.
For sega, it is easer for them to just crop the screen and call it classic then put the roms of the original games. Which would technically cost Sega more money if they did put the original roms in the game. Since the games are not the original roms there might be specific rights to music that sega might have to pay again since its technically a diffrent product. There for by croping the screen and making little changes. Could really save sega money.
4:55 It is the prototype music, just not the versions found in the November 93 Proto, but an older proto, that also ended up being used for the new (at the time) Sonic and Knuckles Collection on PC
I think the reason they didnt use the ROMS for Classic Mode is because they still cant secure the rights to some of the music in Sonic 3 (though I guess they could have simply modified the ROM). My main beef is that Knuckles isnt playable in Classic Mode in Sonic 2, even though Knuckles in Sonic 2 was an official game. It makes no sense.
Okay f'real an actual comment this time. This was a great video! Thanks for the upload, POJR! I didn't know about either Sonic Origins games because I never got into the series super hard, but this makes me wanna pick it up just because I'd love to play through these games again with updated graphics in 16x9! Let's GO!
They pretty much had to give Amy the ability to curl into a ball to get through tunnel and pipe routes. Spin dash she needs to get through certain routes too like breakable walls in Sonic 3 and spin dash switches in Marble Garden and Lava Reef zones.
I actually think the remastered feel applied to classic mode really gives the game that modernized feel of the old games, so I don't see what the problem is there.
@@andrewzapata3427that’s not the problem, the problem is “Classic Mode” should be the ROMs I shouldn’t have to work around that, it should just be in the collection If there’s going to be a Classic Mode, they should include the ROMs or don’t include it at all, simple as that
Just want to point out that Knuckles wasn't originally in Sonic CD in the first place. If you ask me, it was fine before and Knuckles now being in Sonic CD with modified levels constitutes going above and beyond what was expected.
I think the reason newer versions of sonic 3 has different soundtracks is alot of the music was Michael Jacksons. The ending credit was a sped up stranger in moscow and the song Jam was used in the casino stage. Also The ice level used a song called Hard Times by a band called The Jetzons.
Sonic Origins could have been so much more in so many directions. But then it just kinda wasn't. I get the feeling people would have been less angry about it if they just didn't put into their marketing headline that it is the definitive classic sonic experience, which implies we won't get another attempt at improvement in the future. This is what is getting upported for generations to come once new hardware drops.
7:36 Not most, half and of that half, half could be kinda argued to be better on Master System (1, 2 and Chaos, 2 being the only arguable one) the other half came out AFTER their Game Gear counterparts and 1 was a poorly optimized Brazil exclusive.
I agree that it would be cool if you could get the super form without using debug mode too. It's sad that Sega didn't listen. As for Amy losing that trait from Sonic Advance my guess is that Sega did away with it cause people were having issue with that which is why in Sonic Advance 2 Amy could curl into a ball in that one, just that she couldn't do the spin dash. The complaint probably applies to how Sega handles Amy in this collection too. Anyways thanks for the shoutout.
I don't have much problems with the Carnival Night theme or every other music(s) in Sonic 3 and I, for some reason, enjoy Sonic Origins a lot. Sure, it has some problems, I will agree, but whenever I play the Origins version of Sonic 3, I think of it this way: From what I understood, there's no other way playing the original Sonic 3 nowadays unless you buy the physical copy of the game be it the Sega Mega Drive version or the Sega Saturn version (which I have), so playing the Origins version of Sonic 3, in my opinion, would be better than nothing.
I like the remastered versions. To play the classics untouched, I'll just fire up RetroArch on my Android TV in the living room and emulate them. It's nice to have some Game Gear titles, but IMHO the "bigger" Sonic games should have come from the Master System because in these versions you can see more. And they might still be (partly) using the original ROMs. IIRC, Nintendo did something like this with the 3D All Stars Collection some years ago. They are emulated but the emulator has some hooks when the code hits a certain point where the Switch executes its own code, transferring control back to the emulator afterwards.
RetroArch is nice, but not everyone likes using roms/emulation. I bet some consumers probably bought this collection expecting the original Genesis games, only to get ports.
scanlines for game gear games wouldn't look very good given the small resolution. that wouldn't be a problem if they just included the master system versions (or master system conversions of games that only came out on the game gear; that's a thing people do to get the higher resolution and play the games on their genesis)
I don't like it when people beg you to subscribe, especially when you weren't even considering it, subscriptions are something you have to earn, you don't beg for them. If i keep seeing your videos and I keep watching them I can decide if it's worth my time subscribing and seeing the things you post more often, then after that I would decide if i'm subscribing or not, 99% of people are not just going to take your word for it, especially when this is the first video they have ever seen on your channel, and the fact that not even a minute in you already hit that plug, in my opinion you should do that after the video so if people do actually want to subscribe they would have a basic idea of what your videos are like, just asking in the beginning is not going to cut it. And i'm not being a hater, this is criticism, sure a little harsh but that's the way it's gotta be for it to really leave an impression. For some reason this really triggered me.
Why can’t Tails go super in Sonic 2? Makes no since. It only took 7 emeralds in Sonic 3 for him to go super in Origins. They could have easily added this and would have been an easy win here for SEGA, but they dropped the ball yet again.
Yeah it makes no sense but I do find the lack of Super Tails quite a relief. Having too many super forms while cool only makes the game feel way too easy and what's worst they change the whole tune of the level so instead of the fantastic level music you get that annoying invincibility super theme that just gets old very quick.
No. Origins has a few weird removings like Sonic's voice in Sonic CD, which were in the original games. Not to say that these old roms dont run on the retro engine, and because the remasters does, sometimes you cant get a few things, or at very least make it very hard to get them. And who doesn't want to see how the Sonic CD opening looked like on the Sega CD? And also also, make it able to toggle from the Japanese, American and European versions of the games.
So about that..yeah..issue solved mostly as of typing this comment, there is a new update which makes the graphics more retro Imo makes visibility in stages worse somewhat especially for a series abour going fast but this is a collection of revered old games so to not get that experience is a shame, no longer though unless the rom is still preferred over retro graphics somehow
When these remasters were first happening, I did buy the Sonic CD one on PS3. I was disappointed Sonic 1 & 2 were mobile only, I really wanted those on a console as well. But what I really wanted was Sonic 3 & Knuckles remastered, my favourite game ever. And yes. I own these games many times over already, so I remaster was what I wanted. I love this set, I preordered the physical Switch version. And I have completed the story mode already. As far as the extras, Amy is a good addition, but not a selling feature, and I really could’ve done without the Game Gear games. I feel the remaining 16bit Roms would’ve been better, and even Knuckles Chaotix would e been great. You’d think they would have where all the manuals and music from those games are in the Museum. As far as those classic modes, I feel calling them classic mode isn’t what they should called them, more like, “you can die mode” would’ve been better. Again I wasn’t in this set for classic Roms personally, I really wanted Sonic 3 & Knuckles remastered, having them all remastered in the set is great
They changed Amy because many people had problems with her in Sonic Advance. They changed her in Sonic Advance 2 so she can play like the other characters.
If you were going to talk about taking the Sonic 3 prototype music and sticking it in, well, Ice Cap Act 2 was easily the worst possible choice for that. To be honest, I find it really hard to care about how Amy handles. Either she's a reskin of Sonic or she plays so differently that I treat her like she's a carrier of several highly contagious diseases (unless she's truly mandatory).
If you do the cheat code on the sonic 1 menu, up down left right start, it takes you to the debug mode and you can disable spin-dash and turn on s1 spikes
It's cause the GG games are originally in mono and now you're playing them on a stereo focus consoles which is why the audio sounded weird. To fix that you must set your console audio to mono in able to get the native audio quality from the GG games.
@@VOAN Game Gear actually have stereo audio capabilities! The concept was exactly like Game Boy: you can only hear the stereo from headphone jack because the handheld only have 1 speaker (mono). Also similarly to GB it's a hard pan (left, right or both only) and no extra channels were added or enhanced, so overall is quite hard to take advantage of it considering how poor SN76489 was.
I have the sonic games on the genesis megadrive collection on steam, I was considering picking up origins but the fact they took the genesis roms off steam (which were like $1 each on sale) for origins for $30 is pathetic. I'll stick with sonic forever, absolute, and AIR for now thanks Sega 🙄
To reiterate, the biggest problem is not the classic mode, but the lack of remastered soundtracks from the mobile versions of Sonic 1 and 2, therefore not giving us the option to choose between them or the original Genesis soundtracks
I hope one day we get a rerelease of Sonic 3 with the Jackson music reinstated! Even if it's an Arcade1up machine, which not everyone has room for! If Arcade1up do get the license for Sonic 3 and its Jackson music, it would also be a good idea to release a Sonic 3 CouchCade!
So two things to go over... For Sonic 1, Debug mode is NOT needed for the super forms; you just need to enter the level select and set the max emeralds from 6 to 7; that'll make the Mobile Special Stage 7 appear in the line up. As for Classic mode...the original roms were NEVER going to happen; sure, you could get away with Sonic 1 and 2 via the original roms or M2's Sega Ages versions, and you could even use the version of CD that was on the Genesis Mini 2; but there's no way in hell they could have used 3&K's rom because I doubt they would have been able to go into the rom and change the music; they would have had to use Anniversary Mode in 4:3, and it would clearly be the one game running much smoother than the others, and it would just be jarring; it was best to go the more cohesive route and have the Anniversary Mode versions set to 4:3 with the original Lives and Continue systems. The only thing to blame here was the potential lawsuit from MJ's estate they would have been staring down if they even attempted to use S3&K's original rom.
When I read last year that the Sonic 3 & Knuckles game's 3 zone music was changed in the Sonic Origins collection, I didn't buy it on Steam. Regardless of how involved Michael Jackson was in composing the music for the Sega Mega Drive game, I much prefer those zone music in the Sega Mega Drive version than those prototype music that the developers recreated them. Also, I'm better at using fan remakes like Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited on PC. 🙂
hey, the part where you say amy's hitbox is bad , the part about the spikes , I never had a problem with it. Every player plays different . I tried it multiple times to test it out and its still the same for me, Im playing the switch version cause xbox and ps4 controllers are bad when you want to hit angles on the dpad
Just letting you know that there is no super sonic in sonic 1. Like in the original there wasn’t a super sonic so that’s why the only way to get super sonic is through debug mode.
I had the original roms in the Sega Genesis Collections, even the Sonic ones that you can´t buy anymore. To think they gave you the roms there so you can emulate where you want or put them in a flashcard.
i have a question, why do you refer to sonic origins and sonic origins plus as different collections? sonic origins plus is just a small addition to sonic origins, its not a successor like you said.
The version of Amy that used in Sonic Origins is supposed to represent a Genesis Style version of Amy Sonic Advance Amy would look ridiculous in Sonic Origins because that's the original Sonic Adventure version of Amy in a 2d world on Game Boy Advance they use the Sega CD version of Amy Rose because it made her play and act more like a Genesis version of Amy a lot of fans feel that way that they feel that what they did with Amy On the Origin collection was a good choice from Sega because it makes Amy feel like she would if she was available when Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 were first released on Genesis if Amy was released back then the origin version of Amy what actually fit in perfectly with that generation of Sonic games cuz their art style and Sprite and appearance of Amy would feel more like a Genesis Amy why Sonic Origins Amy is a perfect Sprite design because it feels more like she would if she was made for the original Genesis Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles when you think about it that way Amy Rose in Sonic Origins pixel version makes sense because her Sprite version makes sense in origin of Amy Rose because it makes her look like she would if she was released on the original Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Sega Genesis making her look like an actual Genesis version of herself Amy Rose in Sonic origin if you look at it from that point of view Amy Rose and Sonic Origins Sprites do make sense because it does make her look more of a Genesis Style version of her Amy Rose
No but in some romhack they did manage to hack the Sonic 2 version of Super Sonic into the game similar to how they implement the spindash. In some of those romhacks they use recycle levels or prototype levels to make a 7th zone and a 7th special stage to implement the 7th Chaos Emerald to get Super Sonic. Would had wish Sega does something like that for this official release of Sonic 1 too cause the Debug mode did make it seem that Super Sonic is possible in Sonic 1 in the Origins collection.
Is it possible that the actual Mega Drive ROMs are on there but they patched in certain aspects? (like the bonus stage) Another test would be to see how they handles Sonic 2' two player "Interlace Mode 2" mode.
Those are just the remaster version but without the wide screen. The only classic thing about them is that the games are play in 4:3 and you now had lives otherwise it's the same as the remastered versions just more cramp and challenging. Honestly I don't get why people complain about those cause then you get the best of both worlds as you got the smooth gameplay and the classic feel but I guess when they say classic they really want the classics as in no changes to the original.
The reason there's no Super Sonic in Sonic 1 is because there wasn't one in Sonic 1 originally. It wasn't introduced until Sonic 2... It feels to me like you're being nitpicky with that. You need all 7 chaos emeralds to turn super. You can make Super Sonic available through the level select cheat code, and that's something I'm more than OK with.
No appeal to me. I was mainly a Nintendo fanboy in the 80s and early 90s and only had the Game Gear. The Sonic games for them seemed ok at the time but just dobt hold up for me now.
Sonic organic need patch for old format of original game from saga console graphics and game play from saga Genesis days name mode original mode they can charge you 20 dollar hey saga I love that pluse they need to add ever body can play that mode as optional
Huge pet peeve of mine is people asking for Super Sonic in 1 and CD. It doesn’t make sense. In 1, you only have 6 so you can’t even go super. In CD, there are no Chaos Emeralds to begin with.
I gonna be honest I skipped Origins and I'm probably going to Skip Origins Plus..... I played Sonic Mania and already saw "Remixes" of the Classic Sonic Levels but some New Levels were Added to the Game too.... but the Moment Origins got Announced I'm like "Are you F%$#ing Kidding me Sega?" Again I already saw this in Sonic Mania! Why do I need to see it again? SEGA FFS MAKE A NEW 3D SONIC GAME I'M SICK OF THIS CRAP! IF I SEE ANOTHER CLASSIC SONIC BUNDLE? I'M GONNA LOSE IT!
Let's see I could play the ps2 genesis classics or maybe the xbox or ps3 or gamecube. Or best of all I'll just pull out the carts or sonic cd. 😅 this collection is garbage.
there also is no knuckles in sonic 1. and yet, in a collection like this, it's expected, because that's whats supposed to set it apart from the other releases.
@@FuzzBucket69 there's 2 games titled "sonic the hedgehog". so you mean "sonic the hedgehog", the 1991 video game, colloquially known as "sonic 1", as it's the first game in the series.
The music from the original games are mired in copyright legality. Much of the music belongs to Yuji Naka of Dreams come true. And some of the music from Sonic 3 belongs to the Micheal Jackson estate.
I find it weird how you don't really bring up the animated cutscenes between each game that bridge the stories together. One of them shows the 7th Chaos Emerald being released after the first game, which is what allows Sonic to actually achieve his super form. Sonic going Super is important to 2, so allowing it to be used beforehand would be odd. Not to mention the levels not being designed for it.
You're not even collecting the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic CD so it makes sense why they aren't in that game either but it would've been cool if they were in debug mode.
