I had this on PC. I think there was a glide path as well which ran extremely good on VooDoo2's at the time on even fairly minimal hardware like a Celeron 266 or 300A.

The power difference between Saturn/PS1/N64 and late 90s PCs is nothing short of astounding, and even managed to keep up with the Dreamcast. I’d say this was the golden age of console ports on PC. PS2/GameCube are probably brute forcing the PC port with their comparable hardware to slightly later PCs.

Thanks for the more obscure versions (Gamecube and Sonic R Updater) - but it would be a lot easier to compare the versions if the track was the same in every clip. It's impossible to tell if the Sonic Gems version lacks water reflexions or if they're not supposed to be there in the winter version of the track.

I remember playing this game when I was a bit younger on my ps2, since gems collection also released for the ps2 in Europe. It looks much better than the PC version, with the bigger draw distance. Good memories

I was not aware that anyone had actually worked on adapting _Sonic R_ for modern gaming. I need to look into this, immediately. I _loved_ my _Windows 98_ copy of this game! Also… _Cheese and crackers,_ Gamecube Tails, what did you _eat_ to make that noise?!

I've never played it but I think it looks very good on the Saturn, fast and smooth enough for the machine. I wonder if it would have been possible to tweak the engine enough to make a 3D platformer out of it, maybe something similar to Crash Bandicoot (fixed paths vs the more free roaming Mario 64). The Saturn could have used that kind of game.

Well, the Saturn was capable of really impressive stuff as sonic r, burning rangers, radiant silver gun or panzer dragoon. The Sonic R game engine was enhanced already to be a Sonic game. It started as a F1 simulator, at least on Saturn. It could've been amazing to have an open world like the little landscape in Sonic Jam, but Sega did everything wrong.

i grew up with the DirectDraw version, the memories of the game fucking up in Windows 10 and being so goddamn scared of tails doll appearing on my back.

okay the sonic r updater is a really good one as it updates the 98 version into the gamecube version essentially making it much more playable and adding more view distance and features.

Biggest downgrade definitely has to be the removal of the Saturns colored lighting though unfortunately. Not saying it looks bad without it, it’s just looks way flatter and less colorful (at least to me)

@@Dev_Cherry that was in later 2000s versions of the pc version I believe, the original 1998 pc version still kept it.

@@Dev_Cherry This can be restored by mods, that Sonic R Updater supports. There are also many other fixes and improvements for this version, so I consider it as definitive way to play this emmmm expirience.

That's because it's running on hardware released in 1994, and even so it has better audio and better lighting than the later PC and Gamecube ports.

I played this on Sega Saturn. Now that was a blast. Spend all day on that singing the songs along the way. Munching on crisps and soda. Good times.

Me gustó como trabajaron el dibujado del escenario en la versión cubo, no existe! Y la versión de PC 2004 con ese Update que perfecta a nivel de texturas suavizadas y sólidas... Tiene algo del dibujado simulado con el fade de fondo... Pero más alejado de las versiones que lo tienen... Ignoraba que existían estas otras versiones ya las voy a buscar!! 💪

DirectDraw is a graphics mode on Windows. While not as powerful as Direct3D, it does look good.

DirectDraw is a 2D graphics mode of Windows and therefore renders its 3D graphics completely in software (using the CPU), which does not use 3D acceleration hardware (which some graphics cards of the time lacked). This reduces resolution and graphical fidelity by a lot, but this way you can still play if your graphics card does not support 3D.

The version on the Saturn has really bad draw distance, no weather effects, and generally looks worse than the other versions, imo. It’s definitely very vibrant and impressive for the Saturn, though.

I wish Sega would have had them make Sonic Xtreme instead of STI doing it. We would have had a working Sonic 3D platformer on the Saturn, and it would have looked as great as Sonic R.

Basically Sonic's relay race game, the PC version comes with 2 versions : original version has 2 modes such as DirectDraw (32-bit console era mode) and Direct 3D (6th-gen console era mode) and updated version came out in 2007 such as very big resolution, but graphics remain unchanged.

The 1998 pc version also added stuff like online multiplayer and different map varieties like a winter version of some maps where the water turns into ice. However both things were removed in later versions in the 2000s because of the shift in computer hardware at the time that broke old games with different formats. This also affected some textures and sounds. And those later versions were the same ones to be used in the Gamecube port.
