1:17 - 1:48 holy shit. That extra part you added is so fucking good. I'm not even sure I can go back to the original because I'm expecting this extra climactic part now.
@@NewtubeWorldYT Probably because it's not ... "Sonic" enough? Not to mention the themeing was more based on the cartoons than it was in-game lore... But I for one did enjoy it, even if I was a bit crap at it back then... and probably still now :D
@@NewtubeWorldYT I've definitely come to terms with the fact that it can be extremely glitchy (in fact, I showed off one such example in my very first video for my channel), but I have quite a bit of fun with it! Once you really know how to manipulate the physics, you're all set.
Awesome that you've kept some of the classic instrument stuff intact- Spinball certainly had it's own special sound to it compared to the Japanese stuff from the other games!
Now see what gave GEMS its infamous sounds was a mix of the available presets in the software and a lot of the music being unquantized MIDIs. I can't say for sure, but in some cases, I do believe Howard Drossin did make his own sounds in some of the games he made music for. I do believe you could make something in GEMS that could sound exactly like what we're hearing here. Would it be easy? Absolutely not, but it could be possible as long as you know your way around an FM synth. Also, something I didn't know until recently is that GEMS does also allow access to the YM2612's channel 3 "special mode" which allows for free tuning of the four operators. I don't know if anyone made use of that, but it is there apparently
I'll always maintain that Howard Drossin was an unsung hero of STI. Hell, even on his first project, he managed to make GEMS sound pretty damn decent. Toxic Caves always had a killer groove, but the way you syncopate the lead synths with the groove just punches the song up to an entirely different level. Absolutely killer work man, good to see you back at it!
Really glad you made this, these compositions really deserved more than to be done with Gems Also, if 0:38 is an intentional nod to the Virtual Sonic version then that's amazing
I've said this before and I'll say it once again, GEMS is easily capable of music as impressive as even the better half of what you have in Japanese MD games. It's just that nobody who was using GEMS actually knew about what it was capable of.
@@camulodunon I suppose that was part of the point of GEMS really. Those that had experience with how to program an FM chip would have made their own drivers. I don't think European developers used GEMS. Certainly not as much as American developers did.
@@solarflare9078 well look at every banger track the sega genesis has made. (mystic caves is a good example) i juss think the ppl who handled the music for spinball didnt know how to work with the genesis, just look at the sonic spinball options music
@@batteries671 I was replying to the original commenter about how sonic hysteria's version of toxic caves is a similar concept. I know savaged's stuff is good lol
I had to admit even though a lot of people hated this game I loved it more than other Sonic games. A lot of my games were stolen, lost, or traded. This one never left my collection and I never tried to get rid of it. When I finally sold my Nomad I included Sonic Spinball and other gems to sweetin' the deal and to my surprise the buyer was stoked to get a good condition Sonic Spinball with manual.
currently going insane over this, didnt think it was possible to improve perfection but here we are... im in love with the dramatic feel at 1:17 (and its looped equivalent), which i always always love in a song. ill have to check more of this guys stuff out, im amazed!
I love Howard Drossin's compositions, and this as well as your Comix Zone remix shows how much better his songs could have sounded if they weren't held back by GEMS.
@@an3_omx It sounds terrible on real hardware too because it is terrible. It wasn't even the best software on the Genesis. They should have used the same tracker SOJ was using.
Now just need some heavy metal Laval PowerHouse. Great work, if only spinball could get a remake with a sound track like this. Nice to hear a remix/arrangement that really improves on the original. Almost reminds me of the TMNT arcade game if it was a tad more sonic ish.
I'm stressed out of my mind, crunching on a project due before my teacher wakes up at around 8AM but this is helping me get through it with those funky vibes. Damn this is good...
You took a pretty decent track and made it amazing. The chord progression you added to one of the later sections (1:17) just elevates the composition in ways I couldn’t have imagined. It’s subtle but highly effective!
