Hi commenters! Here are some Bonus Opinions I left out for sake of brevity: - Chaos Emerald powers do nothing for me. None of them are that interesting or useful to me outside of making a handful of bosses faster - The character act system is kinda sloppy, and some of the levels aren't great. Act Knuckles in particular is just actually bad. Also playing as Knuckles sucks in this game. - Golden Capital is kind of a bad level in general. But not really bad enough that I would say its frustrating, outside of that damned Fang boss fight.
@@EgoHead710 Because the gameplay is completely different? They're good games and I like them a lot but it's fine for other people to not like it as much as the 2d or adventure games
Look. I knew from the beginning this would’ve been a disaster; from how the characters moved, and how they never really showed us the level design of the game. Just keep that in mind for future games when they’re announced.
I'm disappointed, but not shocked, that Sonic Superstars feels a little lacking and mediocre. I honestly think that 60 bucks price tag really was one thing that hurt the game in sales, and especially the insane money they are asking for the "deluxe edition". They act like people have that type of money to spend in the first place. Also, like you mentioned, this game looks like it has very little content to justify 60 bucks. Games like Metroid Dread and Super Mario Bros Wonder prove that 2D game can be worth full price, especially when they are in a much more completed state and have little to no bugs. Maybe I'll think about getting this game on a major sale at best, but for right now, it's not worth full price or deluxe price. I'm calling it now, they are going to release some DLC that either makes Fang playable, or adds back Mighty and Ray. They did that with Amy for Sonic Origins+ and got away with it, and I bet they'll do it again, charging 30 bucks for it too.
i was in shock when you said "thanks for 1K". for the amount of polish, cute art, and interesting insight, i figured this was at minimum a 300K or so channel
I totally agree with you, while i did enjoy this game at first, the final boss at trip's story was the worst part of the game, especially with no checkpoint at all and no room for error, its not that the boss is hard its quite the opposite, its too long and too annoying when you make just only 1 slip up its start over time, it took me 4 days to beat it and im not redoing this boss fight ever again, its just a massive time waster, and my other complaint is theres no enough levels in my opinion, I wish there were a level building mode in this game, we need an official sonic maker game and im not talking about fan made maker games like roblox or anything like that, i wish we get an actual sonic maker
sam! candles! :D Also big congrats to you on 1K subs that’s so so exciting and it’s been wonderful seeing your channel grow so fast from when I joined!
I love battle mode it’s so fun to wait like 7 minutes to get into a match in a lobby I’m already in with no customization only to have the game decide to not finish a round before it even gets to the fun part (race mode)
I'm more forgiving to most of the boss designs in this game... because I argue that you're at least forced to keep moving and not just stand around, or move very little. (Don't get me wrong, though, I definitely felt the "wait game" with the likes of the Sand Sanctuary boss)
YAAAAAAY!!! NEW SAM CANDLES VIDEO!!! Havent played the game yet but yeah after hearing all this I think imma just wait for a price drop, or the inevitable "PLUS" DLC add-on loool
Deadass only part of this game that directly bothered me was the music because high key so sick of the music sounding like ripped bad genesis music and the ripped mania tracks didn't make it better Ost didn't have originally to me Songs sound either like its from 4 or mania and nothing that makes go "sonic superstars" when you hear it Like you can tell the difference in a genesis sonic song and a sonic 4 song despite inherently sounding similar you could still notice a difference or even a song from 2 and 3 The music in superstars doesn't have that same identity
**Warning: Extremely Long Comment** You know, I never played Sonic Superstars, however I have seen multiple friends, and even my partner play the full game on stream, and from what I can tell I pretty much agree that the game is just…incredibly mediocre. According to said friends I actually think Superstars is a game that like, starts out decent-good, but then slowly loses steam around the halfway point and just gets all around unfun. I know most classic games also “fall off” but that tends to happen at the tail end of the game and the falloff isn’t *that* bad (for example, Sonic 2). It feels like the game was frontloaded in quality. You mentioned the music and sound design and I think you nailed how much of it is detrimental to the game. With the soundtrack I genuinely would have preferred an all around consistently underwhelming OST, over this unfocused mess of bangers and ear poison. I actually found some of Jun Senoue’s music here worse than Sonic 4’s. The sound effects are also just mixed so horrible I’ve seen moments where sonic would do something like, phase through an enemy and play this extremely ear piercing noise. It’s fucked up… On the topic of music I think there’s more issues to Superstars’ presentation than the sound, those that I found (to my knowledge) weren’t fully discussed in the video. Even when all we saw was prerelease footage, I genuinely found the game’s look to be that of an old, 2013 3ds game. Not a $60 multi-platform console game. I’m not one of those people who think pixel art/hand drawn is the only valid style for 2d platformers, 2.5d can work! Just look at Metroid Dread, Mario Wonder, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Sonic Superstars is not even in the same ballpark as these games though, especially with its unusually lackluster art direction in spite of the fact that Naoto Ohshima helped make the game. l think another thing that contributes to this weird, cheap mobile game feel of Sonic Superstars is how stilted the animations feel. From what I saw, sonic and the other characters have decent to great animation, but for everything else it’s all just so, plain and stilted. The final boss in particular straight up barely moves half the time it’s so weird. Seeing the animations of Superstars vs a game like Metroid Dread is night and day. I can’t comment on the gameplay itself, it’s not fair to critique the gameplay of a game I never played. That being said I’ve heard many share the same sentiment about the boss design being actively detrimental. They certainly don’t look fun. Maybe this is the most nitpicky complaint about the game I’ve ever had but uh…I felt like the story was pretty bad too? Like, classic sonic games never had much in the way of story I get that, but there’s just so much lacking in context for Sonic Superstars. I have this same issue with Mania but that had the excuse of being forcibly tied to Forces and it also being a “throwback game”. I really liked the new character in superstars she’s adorable…but i feel like she was never as fleshed out as the game wanted her to be. Sonic 3 and Knuckles I think is a game that did genuinely have a good story, best in the series if I wanna share my “unpopular” opinion. I wish Superstars was at least in a similar level in that regard. I dunno I’m just kind of jaded with sonic. I’ve told myself that I’m someone who just hates sonic and for the longest time I believed it, but actually I just find myself super jaded and disappointed with the franchise. I’m not even that big on Mania but it had *something* going. It was still a great game and I was excited for a sequel to take what was learned and make the best classic sonic game of all time. Unfortunately it seemed like SEGA took the cheap way out and essentially just…brought in the developers of Yoshi’s New Island. I heard apparently that Superstars had a $60 price discourse. I remember Metroid Dread falling under similar scrutiny and I think it made sense. I think in general both of these games had like, similar situations surrounding them, being the first new 2d game in years, being made by a studio known for mostly mediocre output usually. And both falling under scrutiny for its price tag, and it made sense. Both 2D Metroid and 2D Sonic had to prove their worth, for both games they’re the first completely new title (no reused zones or remakes) in years. To me, the former proved its worth and has become one of my favorite Metroid games of all time. Sonic Superstars, based on what I feel about it presentation wise and from everything I’ve seen, sounds like it’s shaping up to be the worst classic styled sonic game (yes I like 1 and CD). I may eventually get sonic superstars, but never at the $60 asking price, especially when aa 2d platformer like mario wonder is far more worth the money and time invested into it. I am sorry by the way if I made this comment super super long I just get passionate about this sort of thing. If you read through all of my comment, thank you so much :). And also, congrats on the 1,000 subscribers!
I appreciate the long comment! One thing to say though, Arzest is not just "the developers of yoshis new island", they are also the studio lead by the guy who designed Sonic himself and directed Sonic CD. Sonic Superstars is not really a BAD classic sonic game in its totality though, like i said in the video its pretty good OVERALL but im just disappointed with the specific parts that weren't as polished as they could be. I still might like playing it more than sonic 1 outside of the bosses
@@samcandles Thank you so much for reading my comment 😃 I did know that Naoto Ohshima lead Arzest, so I apologize for not mentioning it earlier. I think however, even with someone as legendary as him leading the company, I think the games that came from Arzest still haven’t really shown too much promise. I probably am wrong about the idea that SEGA “cheapened” out with Arzest though, perhaps Naoto Ohshima and Takashi Iizuka just wanted to work together on a new sonic project, so I also apologize for that. And honestly that’s fair the game seems like it has merit, again my explicitly harsh critiques have been mainly aimed at the art direction and presentation, which I do not think previous classic games suffered from. If the game ever goes on sale (thinking…70% off hehehe) I might buy it and see what the game has to offer with my own hands.
Nah ah; that you just said you liked forces. There’s no way possible you could like THAT game. I grew up with the game and I STILL hate it. Great video though! Keep up the work!
I didn't play it, just watched four people play it together, and the game seemed. . . Like you said, it seemed *fine*. It had some high points, and some low points, but the multiplayer in particular just doesn't seem to have been done the best.
It started off as a solid enough vibe, and then by the last leg it was bent on killing that vibe. The final level and especially final boss particularly broke any enjoyment I'd had up to that point. The multiplayer being so bare bones, and the robot parts being so overpriced, pretty much managed to fully turn my view on it from "Good, but not worth $60", to "Barely worth $10". I liked Trip, if nothing else.
yeah. had to recently unsub from a RU-vidr because they were letting their love for playable Amy rose cloud their judgment of the game being absolute shit. thanks for not simping.
(insert sonic game here) should've been better. it can be used for almost every single sonic game lmao all of these games are flawed in some terrible way i have not played Superstars or frontiers yet but i seen that sentiment thrown around with them both people complained about lack of content in Sonic origins. Sonic mania is perfect... no im just kidding, people complained about lack of originality Forces was... Forces. Colors ultimate was a war crime we can keep going with this.
idk if you actually watched the video but my issues with superstars are things that affected my ability to enjoy it long term way more than anything in frontiers, or mania, or forces bad audio and long drawn out sections really killed my enthusiasm for the game, even though i think its at least good overall like, of course a lot of sonic games have noticeable failure points, most VIDEO GAMES do, but the ones in superstars really annoy me and that's why i had a mixed impression of the game
A lot of the criticism this game gets is justified, however I myself really enjoy it. It has been awful for me personally as a fan seeing games like Forces and Frontiers release with one being super automated and not fun, and the other being so jank and bland in it's art direction, it's embarrassing, it was just nice to have a Sonic title, I could just sit down and enjoy casually.
I feel like this is by far the hardest recent Sonic game to play and actually finish casually because of the overly long boss fights with no checkpoints
and yet the bosses in this game are better than almost every single boss in mario wonder (because most of them are literally just bowser junior until bowser)
True, planning to make a video about wonder and this is one of my main issues. I still think Wonder's situation is better though because there's no boring slogs to sit through even if it has too few bosses and two of them are just worse versions of the first one
The bosses being just Bowser jr. don’t make them badly designed though. Are all the bosses in classic sonic games bad because they are just Dr. Robotnik?
@@JosephJones-nl5tc It's not JUST that they're just bowser jr, it's that they all follow the same basic mario 3 boss formula. Another element of that is his character design. He LOOKS the same in every boss fight. In pretty much every Sonic game that isn't sonic 1 you fight eggman in a bunch of different mechs.
@@samcandles And Jr. uses different wonder powers each fight making them all unique, just like robotnik using different mechs makes them unique. Jumping onto or hitting the boss a few times is just most platformer boss fights in general not just Mario bros. 3. The lack of boss variety is a valid complaint and criticism, but the actual design of the fights themselves (not just what the boss looks like) are well designed.
@@JosephJones-nl5tc all the nsmb games did more creative things with their bossfights instead of just changing the arena with something you've already seen earlier in the game, and i dont even think those are great
Yeah people love saying if Super Mario Wonder can be $60, why can't this? Well Mario Wonder has it's own problems. But Sonic Superstars is not quality tested and charged extra for additional content. So the same price as Tears of the Kingdom basically. Sonic is lucky I love him enough cause if I got Zelda instead I wouldn't have a life anymore. And this game can be fun in short burst
@@samcandlesI just prefer the ones where I'm actually running. Getting flung around doesn't exactly make for a good experience for me. Imo I had a better time with Sonic Mania
People when Superstars isn't Mania 2, despite everyone knowing it was never going to be as the Mania team left, and it's being developed by the same guy who Directed Sonic CD: 😳😞 I get why some people are disappointed with this game, you wanted Mania 2. But I feel it's unfair to call this game "disappointing" when the odds were always stacked against it. The Mania team had so much experience with Classic Sonic, so they easily pulled through. Arzest just went through Balan Wonderworld. Most people don't dislike this game because it's bad, it's because it's not Mania. Maybe if you tried looking at this game in a different way, you would enjoy it more. 8/10 for me.
CD is my favorite classic sonic game, by far... so that shouldn't be a problem. I am not disappointed exclusively because it's bad (it's not) OR because it's not Mania, I'm disappointed at the general lack of polish and content it has. This is a 60 dollar full price game, I think it's okay to be underwhelmed when it messes so much up
With all due respect, Sonic Mania has way too much love poured into it. It's a kind of love that Sonic Superstars honestly lacks, as it can be seen in how cheap everything looks or the lack of momentum in this game.
