How I think zones would work in a theoretical Sonic CD sequel: Act 1: Level design is more exploration-focused (similar to Sonic CD), is longer than Act 2, and has time warp signs, allowing the player to travel to and from the Past. The Past has the generators and the blue Portal Rings (Time Stone special stages), while the Present has the yellow Portal Rings (Chaos Emerald special stages). The boss at the end will be unique to the time period you fight it in. Act 2: Level design is more straightforward, shorter than Act 1, and takes place exclusively in the Good or Bad Future. The Good Future has less enemies and obstacles, while the Bad Future has more of them, making it challenging to complete. Red Rings can also be found in the Good/Bad Future. Like Act 1, the boss will be unique to the time period you fight it in. The Bad Future boss will usually be the hardest boss of the zone.
