Sonic the Hedgehog 2, based on the Sega video game franchise, is an upcoming action-adventure comedy film directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic the Hedgehog's voice in this sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), with James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Jim Carrey rounding out the cast. The film features Sonic (voiced by Schwartz) and Tails (voiced by O'Shaughnessey) as they work together to locate the Master Emerald before Dr. Eggman (voiced by Carrey) and Knuckles (voiced by Elba).
The sequel will be released in May 2020, following the success of the first film and ambitions for a series. Filming takes occur in Vancouver and Hawaii from March to June 2021.
Paramount Pictures, in collaboration with Sega Sammy Group, will distribute Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theatres in the United States on April 8, 2022. It has garnered a mixed response from critics, similar to the first film. In February 2022, Paramount announced that a third film as well as a spin-off series centred on Knuckles were in the works.
Sonic is keen to make his name as a hero after the events of the previous film, so he stays in Green Hills while Tom and Maddie travel to Hawaii for her sister Rachel's wedding. When Doctor Robotnik, Sonic's arch-enemy, returns from the mushroom planet in search of the Master Emerald in order to conquer the world and exact revenge on Sonic with the help of Knuckles the Echidna, whom he met on the mushroom planet, Sonic and his new friend Miles "Tails" Prower embark on a globe-trotting adventure to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
